On Memorial Day, May 26, 2025, a devastating boat explosion occurred near the New River Triangle in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, injuring 11 of the 13 people on board, including two children aged 5 and 7.  The incident took place around 5:45 p.m. at the Lauderdale Yacht Club while the vessel was anchored near a sandbar.

Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts

Emergency responders, including Good Samaritans, quickly arrived at the scene to assist the victims. All 13 individuals, along with a dog, were rescued from the water. Ten of the injured were initially transported to Broward Health Medical Center, with several later transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s burn unit for more intensive care. As of 10 p.m., eight were reported to be in good condition, while the two children were in fair condition.

Investigation into the Cause

Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing gas vapor in the air, suggesting that a gas vapor buildup may have caused the explosion. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is leading the investigation, with support from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Safety and Prevention

This incident underscores the importance of boat safety and proper maintenance, especially concerning fuel systems. Boaters are advised to regularly inspect their vessels for potential hazards and ensure that all safety equipment is in good working order.
