Michigan City Motorcyclist Loses Life as Vehicle Turns, Skids into Tragedy

A tragic crash occurred in Michigan City, Indiana, on Monday afternoon, November 3, 2025, claiming the life of 34-year-old Brandon Summerlin. According to the Michigan City Police Department (MCPD), at approximately 4:35 p.m., the LaPorte County E-911 Regional Dispatch Center received reports of a serious personal-injury crash at the intersection of East William Street and Pine Street.

Upon arrival, officers from Uniform Patrol Shift 2 and the Traffic Division located Summerlin suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was treated at the scene by emergency personnel and then air-lifted by Lutheran Air to a hospital in South Bend. Tragically, despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

The preliminary investigation by the Traffic Division indicates that Mr. Summerlin was riding his motorcycle southbound on Pine Street, approaching East William Street, when a vehicle attempted to make a southbound turn onto Pine Street from East William Street — cutting across the motorcyclist’s path. In an effort to avoid a collision, Summerlin braked sharply, lost control of his motorcycle, was ejected, and struck the pavement, sustaining critical injuries. Investigators determined that the motorcycle and the other vehicle did not make physical contact.

It was further reported that Mr. Summerlin was not wearing a helmet or protective gear at the time of the crash. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Franciscan Health Michigan City for a chemical test, as required under Indiana law in serious-bodily-injury or fatal crashes. Toxicology results for both the motorcyclist and the driver are currently pending.

Capt. Kevin Urbanczyk of the Michigan City Police Department extended condolences on behalf of the department, stating:

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Brandon Summerlin. This tragic accident serves as a painful reminder of how fragile life can be.”

The investigation remains active and is being led by Officer Daniel Revoir of the Traffic Division. Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, has video footage, or possesses any relevant information to come forward to assist with the investigation. Officer Revoir can be reached at (219) 874-3221 or via email at [email protected].

Other agencies responding to the scene included the Michigan City Fire Department, LaPorte County EMS, Lutheran Air, and a towing service from Dave’s Garage.

In remembrance of Mr. Summerlin, community members described him as a kind-hearted, hardworking individual whose life brought light and laughter to those around him. His passing has left an immeasurable void for those who knew and loved him. “His memory will live on through the love and joy he shared during his 34 years of life,” one remembrance noted.

The MCPD reminds residents that tips may be submitted anonymously through Facebook Messenger, the Crime Tip Hotline at (219) 873-1488, or via the WeTip Hotline for general crime at 800-78-CRIME.
