Delaware State Police have identified the man who was fatally shot during a confrontation with troopers on May 1 as 44-year-old Gregory Painter, a resident of Milford, Delaware.

The incident began to unfold just before 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, when emergency dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting a possible impaired driver traveling along Route 9 (Lewes-Georgetown Highway) near Harbeson Road, a busy corridor in Sussex County.

According to an official statement released by the Delaware State Police, callers described erratic driving behavior consistent with intoxication or severe impairment, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement. Troopers were dispatched to the area and successfully located the vehicle in question a short time later.

Upon attempting to initiate a traffic stop, authorities say the situation escalated rapidly. Painter reportedly failed to comply with commands issued by troopers, resulting in what police are describing as a “confrontation.” The specific details of that confrontation have not been fully disclosed, but it ultimately led to at least one trooper discharging their service weapon, striking Painter.
