Millville, NJ — June 14, 2025

A tight-knit South Jersey community is reeling after the tragic and untimely death of 20-year-old Roshaud Rhett, who was fatally shot late Saturday morning in Millville. The Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office, in coordination with the Millville Police Department, has launched a homicide investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding Rhett’s death.

According to authorities, officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 11:05 a.m. in the 300 block of Maurice Street, a typically quiet residential area just off East Main Street. Upon arrival, law enforcement located Rhett suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was immediately transported by emergency medical services to Inspira Medical Center Vineland, where, despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

Residents in the area described a scene of confusion and sorrow as police cordoned off the block and crime scene investigators began processing evidence. The neighborhood, filled with modest family homes and local businesses, was shaken by the sudden violence. Some witnesses reported hearing a series of gunshots just before emergency responders arrived. Others said they saw a person fleeing the area on foot, but no official suspect description has been released at this time.

In a brief public statement, the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the case remains an active and ongoing investigation. Detectives are canvassing the area, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing potential witnesses in an effort to piece together what led to the fatal encounter.

Roshaud Rhett was a young man with his whole life ahead of him. Though details about his background have not been officially shared, tributes from friends and community members began to appear on social media within hours of the news breaking. Many remembered him as respectful, kind-hearted, and full of potential. Family members, overwhelmed by grief, have asked for privacy as they process the loss and await justice.

This tragedy adds to the growing concern over gun violence in Cumberland County and across parts of New Jersey. Local leaders and advocacy groups have once again called for more resources to be dedicated to violence prevention programs, mental health support, and youth outreach initiatives.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the shooting to contact Detective Jose Ruiz of the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office at (856) 207-2999 or Millville Police Detective Cody Goehringer at (856) 825-7010. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Cumberland County Crime Stoppers at (856) 825-2182.

As the investigation unfolds, a family mourns a son, and a community waits for answers—hoping that those responsible for this senseless act will soon be brought to justice.
