Montgomery, Alabama — A night of chaos and heartbreak unfolded near downtown Montgomery after a mass shooting left at least 14 people wounded, including two fatally, according to authorities. The Montgomery Police Department confirmed that the shooting erupted late Saturday night at a busy intersection, sending shockwaves through the city and prompting an urgent call for justice.
Police say officers were dispatched to the area shortly after 10:30 p.m., following multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire near the intersection of South Court Street and Early Street. When they arrived, they discovered a scene of devastation — victims sprawled on the pavement, vehicles riddled with bullet holes, and terrified bystanders seeking cover from the barrage of gunfire.
Emergency medical teams rushed to the scene to treat the wounded, quickly transporting several victims to nearby hospitals. Despite the efforts of first responders, two individuals succumbed to their injuries, while 12 others remain hospitalized, some in critical condition. The victims’ identities have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
Authorities have not announced any arrests as of early Sunday morning. Investigators are combing through the area for evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses in hopes of identifying those responsible for what officials are calling a “senseless act of violence.” Detectives believe multiple shooters may have been involved, though the motive remains unclear.
Police Chief Darrell Albert addressed the public, describing the shooting as a “tragic and unacceptable act” that has deeply scarred the community. “We are committed to finding whoever is responsible for this,” Albert said. “Our city cannot and will not tolerate this kind of violence. We need every resident’s cooperation to bring those responsible to justice.”
The crime scene stretched across several blocks as investigators worked into the early morning hours, marking bullet casings and collecting shell fragments. Dozens of patrol cars, ambulances, and crime scene units surrounded the intersection while officers redirected traffic and urged residents to avoid the area.
Witnesses described scenes of terror as gunfire erupted without warning. One nearby resident said they heard “dozens of shots” in quick succession, followed by screams and the sound of sirens. “It felt like a war zone,” the witness said. “People were running in every direction. I just grabbed my kids and ducked down.”
City officials and local faith leaders have expressed sorrow and outrage over the mass shooting, urging unity and calm as investigators work to piece together the events. Community organizations have already begun planning vigils and support services for the victims and their families, calling for an end to the escalating gun violence plaguing urban areas.
The Montgomery Police Department has requested that anyone with photos, videos, or information related to the shooting come forward. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the Central Alabama Crime Stoppers hotline, with rewards being offered for information leading to arrests.
As the investigation continues, Montgomery mourns the lives lost in yet another act of senseless violence. The city, shaken and grieving, stands at a crossroads — demanding accountability, healing, and meaningful change to ensure that no more families endure such unimaginable loss.
