Mother Arrested After Children Found Living in Roach-Infested Apartment Following Dispute Over PlayStation in Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, LA — A Shreveport mother is facing serious charges after authorities responding to a domestic disturbance discovered three young children living in squalid, unsafe conditions. The incident unfolded on June 5, 2025, at the Village Square Apartments, where police were initially called for a dispute reportedly sparked by an argument over a PlayStation.

When officers from the Shreveport Police Department arrived at the residence, they were confronted with a disturbing scene. The apartment was found to be severely infested with cockroaches, with insects crawling on the furniture, throughout the kitchen cabinets, and even inside the refrigerator. Roaches were also seen emerging from holes in the walls.

The alarming state of the home prompted officers to alert the Youth Services Division. Inside, they found three children—ages 4, 3, and 1—living with their mother, identified as Cavinitri White. Given the clearly unsafe and unsanitary conditions, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) was called to intervene.

After assessing the situation, DCFS deemed the environment unfit for children. Custody of the three minors was immediately transferred to their father, whose living arrangements were determined to be safe.

Charges Filed Against Cavinitri White

Following the investigation at the scene, Cavinitri White was taken into custody and booked into the Shreveport City Jail on three counts of Neglect of Family (Louisiana Revised Statute 14:74). This charge applies to individuals who fail to provide necessary care, support, and a healthy living environment for dependent family members.

Investigation Ongoing

The Shreveport Police Youth Services Division continues to investigate the case, working to determine the extent of the neglect and whether the children had been subjected to such conditions over a prolonged period. Authorities have not indicated whether additional charges or further actions by child welfare services will follow.

Public Reaction and Concerns

News of the arrest has generated concern and outrage across the Shreveport community. Many are questioning how the children’s living conditions deteriorated to such an extent without earlier intervention.

“It’s deeply upsetting to imagine any child living like that,” said a concerned local resident. “We need to do more as a community to protect vulnerable kids before it gets to this point.”

The situation also brings renewed attention to broader issues such as poverty, mental health, and access to family support resources—factors that often contribute to neglect cases and place children at serious risk.

Next Steps

The three children are now in the care of their father, and authorities are working to ensure their continued safety and well-being. Counseling and support services will likely be made available to help them cope with the trauma and transition.

Cavinitri White remains in custody as the case moves forward through the judicial system.
