FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Tragedy struck a quiet Sunday morning in a gated condominium complex in Fayetteville as police responded to a fatal shooting that left one man dead and a community shaken. Authorities with the Fayetteville Police Department confirmed that 36-year-old Donte Maurice Vanclief, a local resident, was killed in the incident.
According to officials, the shooting occurred around 10:22 a.m. on May 4, 2025, in the 600 block of Barton’s Landing Place, a residential area off Cliffdale Road. Officers responded swiftly after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire within the complex.
Upon arrival, emergency medical personnel found Vanclief critically injured. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where despite the urgent efforts of doctors and first responders, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Vanclief’s identity was confirmed by authorities later that afternoon. He was described as a 36-year-old Black male from Fayetteville.
As police continue their investigation, a disturbing video has emerged on social media, further intensifying public concern. The footage, believed to have been captured by a resident shortly after the shooting, shows a man calmly walking around the condo complex holding what appears to be a rifle-style weapon. In the video, neighbors can be heard reacting with fear and disbelief, with some recording from behind curtains and windows as the suspect moved through the area.
Residents say the community, known for its relative calm and family-friendly environment, has never witnessed an incident of this magnitude. “We’ve never felt unsafe here until today,” said one resident, who asked to remain anonymous. “Seeing someone walking around with a gun in broad daylight—after hearing shots—it’s something you don’t forget.”
The Fayetteville Police Department has not yet released any information regarding the identity of the suspect or potential motive. Authorities are urging anyone with information or additional footage of the incident to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
In the meantime, officers have increased patrols around the condo complex and nearby areas in an effort to reassure residents and deter any potential follow-up violence.
Detectives are also working to verify the authenticity of the social media footage and determine whether the individual seen in the video is directly connected to the shooting. Police are treating the case as an active homicide investigation and are coordinating with state and federal agencies where necessary.
Vanclief’s death marks another tragic entry in the city’s ongoing struggle with gun violence, and community members are once again calling for increased safety measures and better conflict resolution resources.
