Pedestrian Injured in Overnight Crash on I-94 East Near E Grand Blvd: Michigan State Police Investigating
DETROIT, MI — Michigan State Police (MSP) from the Second District are investigating a serious early morning crash that occurred on Saturday, June 14, at approximately 2:50 a.m. on I-94 East near East Grand Boulevard in Detroit. The incident, which involved a pedestrian and two vehicles, has raised concerns about road safety and driver accountability, particularly given the circumstances that both individuals involved were reportedly unlicensed.
According to a preliminary report issued by the Detroit Regional Communication Center, MSP troopers were dispatched to the scene after multiple 911 calls were received regarding a traffic crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, troopers determined that the driver of a Ford Mustang—a 29-year-old male from Ferndale—had lost control of his vehicle. The Mustang came to rest in the left lane of the freeway, obstructing traffic during the early hours of the morning.
Investigators say the driver exited his vehicle and was standing near the trunk, speaking on the phone when tragedy struck. While he was outside his car, a Ford Fusion traveling in the same direction collided with the Mustang and struck the driver. The impact was so forceful that it propelled the man over the median wall, where he landed on the left shoulder of the opposite side of the freeway.
Emergency medical personnel responded promptly and transported the injured pedestrian to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. His current condition has not been officially released, though initial reports indicate he sustained significant injuries due to the collision.
The driver of the Ford Fusion, a 39-year-old female, also from Ferndale, remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators. Fortunately, she was not injured in the crash.
One of the most troubling aspects revealed during the investigation is that neither the driver of the Mustang nor the driver of the Fusion had valid driver’s licenses at the time of the incident. Michigan State Police have noted this detail as a significant factor and say further legal consequences may follow.
The crash forced partial closures of the affected lanes as MSP’s crash reconstruction team worked to process the scene. Motorists in the area experienced delays as troopers worked to clear the scene and ensure the safety of other drivers.
MSP continues to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether speed, distraction, or other potential violations played a role. They are urging drivers to use extreme caution when exiting vehicles on active roadways and to always ensure they are properly licensed to operate a vehicle.
Anyone with additional information or who may have witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact the Michigan State Police Second District.
As of now, no arrests have been made, but the case remains open, and additional charges could be forthcoming pending further review by prosecutors.
