PENDLETON, Ind. — The Indianapolis community breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday after two critically endangered tortoises, stolen earlier this month from the Indianapolis Zoo, were found safe in Falls Park, roughly 37 miles from the zoo. Authorities confirmed that both animals were recovered unharmed.

According to police, the discovery occurred around 4 p.m. when pedestrians spotted a cardboard box behind the park’s museum. Inside were the two stolen tortoises, along with a paper plate containing a note referencing the Indianapolis Zoo.

Pendleton police arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving the call and safely collected the animals. They were immediately transported back for identification and care by zoo staff and wildlife experts.

The tortoises were positively identified through a microchip scan as the same two that had been reported missing earlier this month. Officials confirmed that both were unharmed and in stable condition.

One of the tortoises is an Egyptian tortoise, a species critically endangered due to habitat loss and illegal collection for the pet trade. Experts highlighted the significance of recovering this rare species safely.

The other tortoise is a Northern Spider tortoise, native to Madagascar. The species faces similar threats in the wild and is highly sought after by illegal pet traders, according to the National Zoo.

Zoo officials expressed relief at the animals’ safe return and emphasized the importance of continued vigilance to protect endangered species. They thanked law enforcement and the public for their role in the recovery.

Authorities confirmed that the investigation into the theft is ongoing. While the tortoises have been recovered, police are working to determine who was responsible and how the animals were transported from the zoo to Pendleton.

Community members who witnessed or helped report the tortoises were praised by law enforcement. Officials encouraged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity involving exotic or endangered animals.
