Authorities in Spain now believe the disappearance of a University of Alabama student to be a case of foul play after new details from surveillance footage raised concerns.

James “Jimmy” Gracey, 23, was last seen around 3 a.m. on March 17 outside Shôko Barcelona, a popular nightclub in the city’s Olympic Village near Barceloneta Beach, his family said in a statement on Facebook.

The Mossos d’Esquadra, the local police force, reviewed surveillance footage from that night – which has not been publicly released – that shows Gracey outside Shôko, leaving the club with another person, leading authorities to suspect foul play, Gisela Macedo, a reporter for El Periódico in Barcelona, said in an interview with CBS 42.

Police also said his wallet was found floating in the water near Somorrostro Beach, prompting an intensified search of the surrounding coastline, according to ABC7 Chicago.

Investigators are now working to retrace his movements after he left the nightclub. No persons of interest have been publicly identified.

Gracey had been visiting friends who are studying abroad in Barcelona for spring break when he vanished earlier this week, according to his mother, Therese Gracey, who posted a plea for help Tuesday on the “Students in Barcelona 2026” Facebook page.

“Our family is deeply concerned about James “Jimmy” Gracey, who has been missing in Barcelona since the early morning hours of March 17.”

She wrote that he went out with his friends Monday night but never returned. Police are also in possession of his phone, which was reportedly recovered during the arrest of another person, family spokesperson Noreen Heron told Fox News Digital.

The Gracey family sent out a Wednesday statement that provided a description of Jimmy as they pleaded with the public for help.

“Jimmy is a 20-year-old University of Alabama student visiting friends abroad during spring break. He was last seen around 3:00 AM CET at the Shoko nightclub in the Port Olímpic area. He was wearing a white T-shirt, dark pants (likely joggers), and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross. He is approximately 6’1” and 175 pounds.

“We are asking anyone who may have seen Jimmy or has any information – no matter how small – to please contact 224.505.3886.

“Jimmy is a kind, responsible, and devoted son and brother. It is completely out of character for him not to check in with family and friends.

“We are working closely with local authorities and are incredibly grateful for the support we have received. We ask that you keep Jimmy in your thoughts as we continue to do everything we can to bring him home safely.”

The University of Alabama confirmed Gracey was a student and staff are in contact with his family to offer support.

“James Paul Gracey is a UA student on a personal trip. UA staff are in touch with the family and those associated with them to offer support and assistance in any way possible.”

Gracey, an accounting major set to graduate next year, is also a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. Fraternity officials said he serves as both chaplain and a philanthropy chairman.

“We extend our full support to Jimmy’s family and loved ones, and we stand ready to help them in any way,” said Theta Chi CEO Mike Mayer. “The prayers of the brotherhood of Theta Chi are with Jimmy and all who love him.”

Authorities are urging anyone with information about Gracey’s disappearance to come forward.
