Reading, MA — Chief David Clark and Deputy Chief Christine Amendola have confirmed that the Reading Police Department is actively investigating a tragic multi-vehicle collision that occurred on the evening of Friday, May 2, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The devastating crash took place at approximately 10:06 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street (Route 28) and Hopkins Street.

Emergency dispatchers received nearly a dozen 911 calls reporting a violent crash involving multiple vehicles. Police, fire, and emergency medical services responded immediately to the scene.

According to a preliminary investigation conducted by the Reading Police Department, a 2006 gray Volvo XC70 was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Main Street when it allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Main and Hopkins streets. At that exact moment, a 2014 green Ford Fusion was traveling eastbound on Hopkins Street, entering the intersection lawfully.

The Volvo collided directly with the driver’s side of the Ford Fusion in a high-impact crash. The force of the collision caused the Ford to spin into oncoming northbound traffic on Main Street, where it was struck by a 2014 gray Audi Q7. Following the initial impact, the out-of-control Volvo continued southbound and crashed into a 2018 gray Toyota RAV4.

First responders arriving at the scene rendered aid to all involved. Sadly, the driver of the Ford Fusion was pronounced dead at the scene by Reading firefighters and paramedics. The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending family notification. The driver of the Volvo sustained injuries and was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Additionally, a passenger in the Toyota RAV4 was also injured and transported to the hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed at this time.

The scene was cordoned off for several hours overnight as investigators from the Reading Police Department, with support from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS), worked to reconstruct the sequence of events and gather evidence. The intersection was cleared and reopened in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“This was a horrific and tragic incident that has left our community shaken,” said Chief David Clark. “Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased, and we are committed to a thorough investigation to determine exactly what happened.”

Deputy Chief Christine Amendola emphasized the importance of public assistance in the ongoing investigation: “We urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information — including dashcam footage — to contact the Reading Police Department.”

Authorities are asking anyone with information related to this crash to reach out to the Reading Police at 781-944-1212. The investigation remains open and active.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
