REST IN PEACE: Greensboro Police Honor Officer Alphonzo Chester
GREENSBORO, GA — The Greensboro Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Alphonzo Chester, who passed away after a courageous battle with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. A beloved member of the force and the community, Chester dedicated nearly 14 years to the Greensboro Police (joining in 2011) and more than 30 years to educating and mentoring youth in the Greene County School District .
Chief Rodricus Monford, along with the entire department, described Al as “more than a uniform — a protector, a friend, a mentor, and a shining example of dedication and service.” Al’s impact extended far beyond law enforcement. Colleagues fondly remember him as a calming presence on the streets and a trusted confidant behind the badge.
Before donning his police uniform, Chester spent decades shaping young minds and fostering community trust through education. His dual commitment embodied the idea of public service in its purest form .
In October 2024, Chester announced his diagnosis of Stage 4 pancreatic cancer — an aggressive and often fatal disease. Almost immediately, the Greensboro community rallied to support him. The department launched a GoFundMe campaign, raising thousands to assist with mounting medical bills and family expenses . Additional fundraisers were organized, and the community provided meals, gas cards, and outpourings of love through platforms like GiveInKind .
Despite his declining health, Chester remained resolute, fighting with the same courage and integrity that marked his career. Sadly, the disease proved too aggressive, and he passed away on Monday, June 9, 2025 — leaving behind a legacy of service, mentorship, and selflessness.
