Ridgefield, Connecticut – A mother allegedly poisoned her estranged husband with antifreeze during an ongoing custody battle, authorities reported Friday. The 33-year-old woman faces multiple charges after admitting to tampering with her husband’s beverages in an apparent attempt to make him ill.

Her husband, whose name has not been released, reportedly consumed a small amount of wine at his home on August 7. That evening, he began feeling unwell, experiencing symptoms including vomiting and staggering. Early the next morning, his mother discovered him in a severely weakened state and rushed him to the hospital.

Medical professionals quickly ruled out a stroke and began investigating the possibility of poisoning. Laboratory tests confirmed that the wine contained ethylene glycol, a toxic chemical commonly found in antifreeze. Authorities noted that the victim had no other explanation for exposure to the chemical.

Connecticut State Police documented that the estranged wife had access to the victim’s residence shortly before he drank the wine. Investigators recovered electronic records showing that she had conducted online searches related to lethal chemicals, including monoethylene glycol, and how much of these substances could cause harm.

Initially, she denied any wrongdoing but later confessed to adding ethylene glycol to her husband’s wine. According to authorities, she stated that she never intended to kill him but sought to make him sick as retaliation for what she described as mental abuse during their separation.

Court documents also indicate that she had previously added the chemical to a bottle of iced tea at the home. This action coincided with a period when their child was hospitalized with similar symptoms, raising concerns about the welfare of the family’s minor.

Authorities further reported that the woman acted alone, and no one else in the household was aware of her actions. Her husband believed the motive behind the poisoning was to secure full ownership of their shared residence and gain full-time custody of their child.

She was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of interfering with an officer. Her bond was set at $1 million, and she remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.

The case has drawn attention to the extreme lengths some individuals may go to in contentious custody disputes. Authorities emphasize that such actions carry severe legal consequences and can pose significant risks to both adults and children.

Connecticut State Police continue to investigate the case and encourage anyone with additional information to come forward. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic conflict escalating into criminal acts.
