Sparks, NV – The Sparks Police Department (SPD) is issuing a serious warning to parents and guardians following a disturbing incident involving an attempted child luring. Authorities are urging families to have crucial conversations with their children about the dangers posed by strangers, after a 25-year-old man allegedly tried to coax a young boy into his vehicle.

The incident unfolded around 8:05 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2025, when SPD officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Kiley Parkway after receiving a report of suspicious activity. Responding officers were informed of an alleged attempt to lure a child into a vehicle—an alarming situation that has left the local community shaken.

According to police reports, the suspect, identified as Caleb Tau-Tolliver, allegedly approached an 8-year-old boy and attempted to entice him into his vehicle by offering money in exchange for snacks. The child was reportedly near the vehicle when his mother noticed the interaction. Acting swiftly, she intervened and removed her son from the situation before any harm could occur. Thanks to her immediate response, the child was safely brought away from potential danger.

Following a swift investigation, SPD arrested Tau-Tolliver on May 17, 2025, without incident. He has since been booked into the Washoe County Detention Center, where he faces a serious charge: Lure or Attempt to Lure Child or Mentally Ill Person, a crime that carries significant legal consequences under Nevada law.

A Call to Action for Parents

In the wake of this incident, Sparks Police are emphasizing the importance of proactive and ongoing conversations between parents and their children regarding “stranger danger.”

SPD officials noted that, while this child was fortunately unharmed, the outcome could have been very different. “We commend the quick-thinking actions of the mother who intervened just in time,” said an SPD spokesperson. “This incident serves as a powerful reminder that educating children on how to recognize and respond to dangerous situations can make all the difference.”

Tips for Parents and Guardians

The department has also shared key safety tips to help prevent similar situations:

  • Teach children to never approach or get into a car with someone they do not know, regardless of what is being offered.
  • Establish a family code word that only trusted individuals would know to help verify safe adults in emergencies.
  • Encourage children to trust their instincts—if something feels wrong, they should get away and seek help immediately.
  • Practice scenarios at home so children feel confident about how to react in real situations.
  • Report any suspicious behavior in your neighborhood to local authorities right away.

Community Vigilance

The SPD is calling on the entire community to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behavior. The safety of children depends not only on their families but on the collective responsibility of the community.

Anyone with additional information about this incident or similar suspicious behavior is encouraged to contact the Sparks Police Department at their non-emergency line or submit tips anonymously through regional crime tip lines.

As this case proceeds through the justice system, the community is reminded to stay informed, stay alert, and most importantly, to equip children with the knowledge and confidence they need to stay safe.
