Sumter Man Found Shot to Death in Home—Investigation Ongoing

Sumter, SC – A Sumter man was discovered dead from apparent gunshot wounds in his home early Wednesday morning, and law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

At approximately 5:00 a.m. on May 7, 2025, Sumter County Dispatch received an emergency call reporting that an unresponsive male had been found in a residence located on Dink Street. Upon arrival, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the man, later identified as Robert Dustin Burleson, had died at the scene from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

Authorities are working tirelessly to determine the circumstances of the crime. Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis stated that investigators are currently pursuing multiple leads, expressing confidence that they will be able to make an arrest in the case soon. “We are actively following up on all possible avenues of investigation, and we remain optimistic that justice will be served,” Sheriff Dennis said in a statement.

While the investigation is ongoing, no further details about the incident, including the potential motives or suspects, have been made available to the public at this time. Law enforcement is urging anyone with information about the case to come forward and assist in the investigation.

“We are asking for the community’s help as we work to bring closure to this tragic situation,” Sheriff Dennis continued. “Anyone with information that may assist us is encouraged to contact the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.”
