Swimmer Injured in Apparent Shark Attack at Sunset Beach, North Carolina
Sunset Beach, NC – May 29, 2025 — A swimmer was injured in an apparent shark attack off the coast of North Carolina on Wednesday, prompting authorities to urge beachgoers to exercise increased caution.
The incident occurred around 11:05 a.m. near the 31st Street beach access point at Sunset Beach, located in Brunswick County. The Sunset Beach Fire Department responded to an emergency call reporting a potential shark bite. Upon arrival, first responders provided medical care to the injured swimmer, who had sustained a leg injury. The individual was conscious and alert at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
The victim, identified as surfer Sean Barton, recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “I just got done riding a wave. Standing up, I felt something bite down near my calf and shin region. Immediately, I thought, ‘I think I just got bit by a shark.’” Barton expressed relief that his younger relatives were not harmed during the incident.
This event marks the first reported shark attack of the U.S. summer season. In 2024, the United States led the world in unprovoked shark attacks, with 28 out of the global 47 incidents occurring nationally—14 in Florida alone. Surfers accounted for 34% of attack victims, often due to ocean conditions that attract sharks and impede visibility.
In response to the incident, officials have issued shark warnings to beachgoers as sightings increase along the East Coast. Experts emphasize the importance of vigilance, especially for surfers and swimmers, and recommend precautions such as avoiding swimming during dawn or dusk, staying close to shore, and refraining from wearing shiny jewelry that may attract sharks.
The Sunset Beach Fire Department continues to monitor the situation and advises the public to stay informed about local advisories and safety guidelines while enjoying the beach.
