Tragic Construction Site Collapse at Sempra LNG Facility Claims Three Lives

In the early morning hours of April 29, a devastating construction site incident occurred at a large-scale industrial project operated by Bechtel, a global leader in engineering, procurement, and construction services. The accident, which took place at approximately 2:00 a.m., happened on the grounds of an LNG (liquefied natural gas) facility currently under development by Sempra Infrastructure. The tragic collapse has claimed the lives of three workers and left a deep impact on the local construction community.

According to initial reports and statements from the involved parties, the incident involved a structural failure of a “tank jump form system” — a type of elevated formwork used in large-scale concrete tank construction. This form system collapsed while workers were operating at height, leading to a fall that proved fatal for three individuals.

Bechtel confirmed that the collapse led to multiple workers falling from elevation. Two were pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim, a 41-year-old man from Houston, was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. Sadly, despite efforts to revive him, he succumbed to cardiac arrest.

Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Sr., who has been involved in the preliminary investigation, confirmed the identities and circumstances of the fatalities. Meanwhile, two additional workers sustained injuries but were treated and later released from the hospital, according to a statement released by Sempra Infrastructure.

The company emphasized that an immediate work stoppage was implemented across the entire site following the incident. “Our hearts go out to the families of the individuals impacted by this tragic event,” Sempra’s statement read. “We are working closely with Bechtel and the appropriate authorities to understand the cause and ensure the continued safety of all workers at the site.”

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Captain Crystal Holmes addressed the press later in the morning, stating that the collapse appears to have been caused by a failure within the scaffolding system that supported the tank jump form. “Only three workers fell to the ground as a result of the failure,” she said, adding that details about whether those workers were using fall protection gear remain uncertain at this time.

Federal safety investigators from OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) are expected to launch a full investigation into the structural integrity of the jump form system and whether all safety protocols were adequately followed.

The industrial project, being one of the region’s most significant energy infrastructure developments, has been under close scrutiny due to its size and complexity. Bechtel, with decades of experience in major industrial projects, is expected to cooperate fully with all regulatory bodies during the course of the investigation.

This incident brings renewed attention to the critical importance of worker safety, especially in high-risk construction environments. It is a stark reminder of the potential dangers present even under the supervision of seasoned contractors and at sites managed with rigorous safety standards.

Support services and grief counseling are being offered to the affected workers and their families. Both Sempra Infrastructure and Bechtel have expressed their commitment to assisting families of the victims and ensuring transparency throughout the investigative process.

As the investigation continues, the construction world mourns the loss of three lives in an accident that underscores the unforgiving nature of heavy industrial work — and the vital importance of constant vigilance when it comes to worker safety.
