Tragic Drowning at Lake Lanier: Body of 27-Year-Old Ramon Diaz-Soria Recovered by Authorities
ATLANTA, Ga. — June 15, 2025 — A weekend outing on Lake Lanier turned tragic after the body of a 27-year-old man, Ramon Diaz-Soria, was recovered from the water on Sunday evening, following an extensive search by multiple agencies.
According to officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Diaz-Soria was last seen on Saturday night just north of Vanns Tavern Park in Forsyth County. Witnesses on the scene reported that the young man jumped into the water after the vessel he was riding on came to a stop. He never resurfaced.
The DNR, in collaboration with Forsyth County Fire Department and other local rescue personnel, immediately launched a full-scale search and recovery effort late Saturday night. Conditions on the lake proved challenging as crews battled limited visibility and deep water in the area where Diaz-Soria disappeared.
After nearly 24 hours of searching, sonar equipment helped guide divers to the area where his body was eventually located. At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, his remains were recovered from Lake Lanier. The tragic discovery marked a heartbreaking end to a coordinated, around-the-clock search.
Officials have not reported any signs of foul play at this time. The incident is being investigated as an accidental drowning, though a full report from the Georgia DNR’s Law Enforcement Division is pending.
The Forsyth County Coroner’s Office has taken possession of Diaz-Soria’s body for further examination and to confirm the official cause of death.
Ramon Diaz-Soria was described by friends and family as a spirited, kind-hearted individual who loved the outdoors and cherished time spent with loved ones. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through his community, leaving friends, relatives, and coworkers grappling with the loss.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Diaz-Soria’s family during this incredibly painful time,” said DNR spokesperson Mark McKinnon in a press briefing Sunday night. “We are thankful for the dedicated response of all the emergency personnel who worked tirelessly to find him and bring him home.”
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers that can accompany recreational activities on large bodies of water, especially at night or without life jackets. Authorities emphasized the importance of wearing personal flotation devices and taking extra precautions while boating or swimming in unfamiliar or deep waters.
This is not the first drowning incident on Lake Lanier this year, a reservoir known for both its beauty and history of boating and swimming fatalities. With summer activity increasing across Georgia’s lakes and rivers, safety officials are urging the public to be vigilant.
A formal memorial or funeral announcement for Ramon Diaz-Soria is expected from his family in the coming days. In the meantime, local leaders and community members have begun organizing efforts to support the family during this time of mourning.
The Georgia DNR and Forsyth County authorities have confirmed the investigation remains ongoing, with more details to be released pending autopsy results. Anyone with additional information about the events leading up to the incident is encouraged to contact DNR Law Enforcement.
