Tragic Loss in Tasmania: Community Mourns the Death of Constable Keith Anthony Smith in North Motton Shooting

Investigations continue today into the harrowing events that unfolded on Monday morning in North Motton, Tasmania, where beloved Tasmania Police officer Constable Keith Anthony Smith was fatally shot while carrying out his duties. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the policing community and the broader public, leaving many grappling with the senseless loss of a man known for his professionalism, kindness, and deep commitment to public service.

With the blessing of his grieving family, Tasmania Police Commissioner Donna Adams officially confirmed the identity of the fallen officer as Constable Smith, a 57-year-old with over two decades of dedicated service. Constable Smith had served proudly with Tasmania Police for 25 years and was based at the Ulverstone police station, where he had worked for the past five years.

The incident occurred at a rural property in North Motton, in the state’s North-West, as Constable Smith and a colleague were executing a court-ordered warrant related to the repossession of the property. During the operation, the situation escalated into violence, and Constable Smith was tragically shot and killed. Despite immediate efforts, he could not be saved.

Commissioner Adams described Constable Smith as a respected and admired member of the force, whose presence left a lasting mark on every station and community he served.

“Keith was a respected and committed officer, and his loss will be deeply felt across our policing family and the wider community,” Commissioner Adams said during a press conference. “My heart goes out to Keith’s wife and family. We will be supporting them in every way we can during this incredibly difficult time. The Blue Family will come together today, and over the next days and weeks, and will support the family and each other.”

The family of Constable Smith has understandably asked for privacy as they process their profound loss. In a gesture of unity and respect, police officers across the state have begun donning mourning bands, and flags at police stations have been lowered to half-mast.

Constable Smith’s long and commendable career with Tasmania Police began on September 25, 2000. He graduated with Course 3/2000 on May 11, 2001, and quickly became known not just for his professional diligence but also for his compassion and integrity. Over the years, he served in various roles within the Northern District, including the Northern Crime Management Unit and uniformed patrols. His relocation to Ulverstone in 2020 was marked by continued excellence and quiet leadership.

An avid cyclist, Constable Smith also found joy in giving back to the community through causes beyond his uniform. In 2011, he participated in the Charity Trust bike ride, exemplifying the spirit of service that defined his life both on and off duty.

Throughout his career, Constable Smith received several honors recognizing his exemplary service. He was awarded the Commissioner’s Medal in 2011, a 20-year clasp in 2021, and the prestigious National Police Service Medal in 2016.

As investigations into the fatal incident continue, a 46-year-old man from North Motton—believed to be the individual involved in the shooting—remains hospitalized at Launceston General Hospital. He is under police guard after undergoing surgery for injuries described as non-life-threatening. As of now, no formal charges have been laid, and authorities are urging patience as they conduct a thorough and methodical inquiry.

Commissioner Adams also extended her appreciation to the emergency responders who rushed to the scene and to the dedicated forensic teams who worked late into the night under harsh weather conditions to collect and preserve critical evidence.

“While no other staff have been injured in this terrible incident, all will be impacted by their involvement in such a tragic event,” she said, acknowledging the psychological toll such moments take on all first responders.

Tributes for Constable Smith have begun pouring in from across Tasmania and beyond. Fellow officers, local leaders, and members of the public have expressed grief, gratitude, and admiration for a man who gave his life in the line of duty—serving the very community he loved.

Plans for a formal memorial are expected to be announced in the coming days, and Tasmania Police have confirmed they will continue to support Constable Smith’s family both emotionally and practically as they face the days ahead without their beloved husband, father, and friend.

Constable Keith Anthony Smith’s legacy will be one of courage, dedication, and unwavering service. Tasmania mourns the loss of one of its finest.
