Two Teens Identified After Tragic Halloween Party Shooting in Chula Vista
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (November 1, 2025) — Authorities have identified the two teenage victims who tragically lost their lives in a shooting during a Halloween party Friday night in Chula Vista as 17-year-old Barney O’Kane and 15-year-old Elijah “Yung Eli” Ramirez.
According to the Chula Vista Police Department, the shooting occurred shortly before 10:45 p.m. in the 500 block of East Oxford Street, where a large Halloween gathering of more than 50 teens and young adults had been taking place. Officers were dispatched to the area after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire and chaos erupting from the home.
When first responders arrived, they discovered two teenage males suffering from gunshot wounds in the front yard. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by paramedics, both boys tragically passed at the scene.
Barney O’Kane, 17, a senior at Hilltop High School, was described by friends as a bright and compassionate student known for his humor, creativity, and love for music. Classmates said he had a close circle of friends and had been looking forward to graduation next spring.
Elijah “Yung Eli” Ramirez, 15, attended Otay Ranch High School and was an aspiring rapper who had begun sharing his music online under the name “Yung Eli.” His songs, often filled with messages of hope and resilience, had started gaining attention locally. Friends say he dreamed of one day performing for larger audiences and using his platform to inspire others.
Detectives believe the shooting began after an argument broke out between two groups at the party. Witnesses reported hearing several rounds of gunfire, followed by people running for safety. While the exact motive remains under investigation, police confirmed that the victims were not believed to be directly involved in the dispute.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has taken two young lives far too soon,” said Lt. Miriam Foxx, spokesperson for the Chula Vista Police Department. “We are working diligently to identify everyone involved and bring accountability to those responsible.”
Police spent several hours combing the area for evidence and interviewing witnesses. They are currently reviewing surveillance footage from neighboring homes and asking anyone who attended the party or has information to come forward. No arrests had been announced as of Saturday evening.
The community’s response has been one of collective grief. At both Hilltop and Otay Ranch High Schools, students gathered for impromptu memorials, placing flowers, candles, and photos near the campuses. Teachers and counselors have been made available to provide emotional support to students coping with the loss of their classmates.
Friends of the victims shared heartfelt tributes across social media. “Barney always made everyone laugh — he had a heart that cared for everyone,” one post read. Another friend remembered Elijah as “a dreamer who wanted to change the world with his words.”
Family members of both boys released a joint statement through police, expressing their devastation and gratitude for the outpouring of love. “Our sons were good kids with bright futures ahead of them. We are broken, but we thank the community for their prayers and kindness during this unimaginable time.”
The Chula Vista Police Department urges anyone with information to contact Detective Ryan Hopkins at 619-691-5151 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
As the investigation continues, the Chula Vista community gathers to remember two young lives — Barney O’Kane and Elijah “Yung Eli” Ramirez — whose laughter, music, and light will forever be missed.
