ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA — The Zebulon community is reeling after a tragic and horrifying incident involving Wellington Delano Dickens III, 38, who has been charged with four counts of murder. Authorities say Dickens allegedly confessed to killing his children and led them to human remains found inside a vehicle parked in his home’s garage.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Dickens was taken into custody on Tuesday and is being held without bond at the Johnston County Jail. Court records indicate that he had previously been arrested seven times for child abuse and other offenses.
Initially, Dickens faced a single count of murder on Tuesday morning. However, three additional counts were added later in the day after investigators uncovered further evidence during a search of the property and the vehicle described by the suspect.
According to authorities, Dickens called 911 on Monday evening and told the operator that he had killed his children. The shocking call prompted deputies to respond immediately to his residence, located on the outskirts of Zebulon, approximately 25 miles east of Raleigh.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered that Dickens’ 3-year-old son was alive inside the home. However, he informed officers that four of his other children had died, and their remains were located in the trunk of a vehicle in the garage.
Deputies carefully inspected the vehicle and found multiple human remains as Dickens had described. Investigators immediately secured the scene, collected evidence, and began a thorough investigation to confirm the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The community has been left shocked and grieving over the incident. Friends, neighbors, and local residents expressed disbelief and sorrow at the news, describing the situation as “unimaginable” and “deeply tragic.” Authorities are working closely with social services to support surviving family members.
Law enforcement officials are also reviewing Dickens’ prior criminal record, which includes multiple arrests for child abuse and related offenses. Investigators are examining whether previous interventions could have prevented the tragic outcome.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with additional information regarding the suspect or his activities to come forward. They are also coordinating with forensic teams and child protection services to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.
As Zebulon grapples with this heartbreaking event, the focus remains on supporting the surviving child, assisting family members, and ensuring justice is pursued for the lives lost. The case has shaken the community, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and intervention in cases involving vulnerable children.
