A 28-year-old woman is in critical condition after she was stabbed in the neck while jogging on a bike path in Brooklyn on Friday night, police said, in an attack that has left investigators searching for a suspect who remained at large hours later. The Brooklyn jogger stabbed in Bath Beach was rushed to hospital by emergency medical crews after the attack near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue, an intersection already familiar to New Yorkers for a very different tragedy earlier the same week.

Police have confirmed the core facts of the attack but little else. The woman, whose name has not been released, was jogging shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2026, when she was stabbed in the neck. She was taken to NYU Langone Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. As of Friday night, police said no suspects had been identified and no arrests had been made, and the circumstances of the attack were not immediately clear.

What Happened

According to police accounts reported on Friday night, the 28-year-old runner was on a bike path near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue in Bath Beach when she was attacked at about 8:15 p.m. The wound was to her neck, and she was found in the grass beside the path, according to local television reporting. Emergency medical crews rushed her to NYU Langone Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.

That much is confirmed by police. What is not yet confirmed is almost everything else that residents and runners in the area most want to know: who attacked her, whether the attacker knew her, whether anything was taken, and whether the attack was random. Police have not released a description of a suspect, have not said whether a weapon was recovered, and have not announced any arrests. Local reporting on Friday night likewise described the circumstances as unclear.

Some early local reports, citing unnamed sources, said family members found the woman in the grass after she failed to meet them. That detail has not been confirmed by police in the reports available so far, and it should be treated as unconfirmed until the NYPD says more. The same caution applies to any account of the attack circulating on social media on Saturday morning: at this stage, the police account is short, and the gaps in it are real.

The attack happened on a Friday evening in late October, when the path would have been growing dark. Bath Beach is a residential neighbourhood in southern Brooklyn, close to Bensonhurst Park, and the bike path near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue runs through an area used daily by walkers, runners and cyclists. The timing — just after 8 p.m. — and the location — a path rather than a street — are part of why the case has drawn attention well beyond the neighbourhood.

Background and Context

Bath Beach sits in southern Brooklyn, between Bensonhurst and Gravesend, and the intersection at the centre of this case — Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue — is one of the busiest crossings in the area. It is also, separately, an intersection with a grim recent history. On Wednesday evening, October 28, 2026, just two days before the stabbing, a 30-year-old woman named Siobhan Lynch was struck and killed by a New York City Department of Sanitation garbage truck while crossing the street at the same intersection. Police said the truck, driven by a 41-year-old man, was turning right onto Bay Parkway when it hit her. She was taken to NYU Langone Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, and no arrests were made in that case either.

The two incidents are unrelated — one was a fatal traffic collision, the other is a criminal stabbing under active investigation — but together they have put the same crossing in the news twice in one week, and they have renewed local attention on safety around Bay Parkway. Transportation Alternatives, a New York street-safety advocacy group, said after the truck death that Bay Parkway is a Vision Zero Priority Corridor, with at least 30 people killed or seriously injured along it between 2021 and 2025, and that the Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue intersection itself was identified by the city Department of Transportation as the corridor's second-most dangerous, with 49 injuries recorded there between 2020 and 2024.

That road-safety record does not explain a stabbing, and it would be wrong to suggest otherwise. But it does explain why residents already had reason to be uneasy about this particular stretch of road before Friday night, and why the latest incident has landed so heavily in a community still absorbing a death at the same corner two days earlier.

More broadly, the case arrives at a moment when violent street crime in New York draws intense public attention, and when attacks on people exercising alone — runners, walkers and cyclists — tend to spread quickly online because they touch a routine millions of people share. Police departments across the United States routinely urge people using paths after dark to stay in well-lit areas, to run with a companion where possible, and to report anything suspicious immediately, advice that takes on a sharper edge after an attack like this one. None of that advice, however, answers the central question in this case, which is who did this and why.

Brooklyn Jogger Stabbed: What Police Have and Have Not Said

The confirmed police account, as reported on Friday night, is deliberately narrow: a 28-year-old woman, stabbed in the neck while jogging, found on a bike path near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue at about 8:15 p.m., taken to NYU Langone Hospital in critical condition, no suspect identified, no arrest made, circumstances unclear. That is the whole of the official picture so far.

What police have not said matters just as much. They have not released the woman's name. They have not described an attacker — no age, clothing, height or direction of flight has been made public in the reports so far. They have not said whether the attack appears to have been a robbery, a targeted attack or a random assault. They have not said whether surveillance video from the area exists or is being reviewed, and they have not announced a reward. Any of those details may emerge as detectives work the scene and speak to witnesses, but none of them should be assumed in the meantime.

Investigations of this kind typically move in stages: officers secure and examine the scene, canvass for witnesses and video, check hospitals and emergency calls for related reports, and only then release a suspect description if they have one they are confident in. The absence of a description on Friday night does not mean detectives have nothing — it may mean they are still verifying what they have — but it does mean the public currently has no description to act on, and anyone in the area should rely on official updates rather than rumour.

Reactions and Quotes

There has been no official statement from the NYPD beyond the basic facts reported on Friday night, and no statement from the victim's family has been published. That silence is normal in the first hours of a critical-injury investigation, when the priority is medical care and evidence, and when families have often not yet been given the full picture themselves.

Local television coverage on Friday night reflected the same uncertainty. One local report described the woman as critical after being stabbed in the neck while out for a jog in Brooklyn, and said to check for updates in the morning, adding that her condition was not looking good. That phrasing — stark as it is — is a reporter's assessment on the night, not a medical update, and the only formal condition reported by police remains "critical" at NYU Langone Hospital.

Online, the attack has already prompted the familiar mix of shock, sympathy and warnings to other runners, particularly women who run alone in the evening. Those reactions are understandable, but they are not evidence, and they should not be mistaken for information about what happened. Until police release more, the most reliable response is also the simplest: treat the official account as the account, and treat everything else as unverified.

Why It Matters

Attacks on joggers resonate because jogging is, for most people, an ordinary and solitary act. A path at 8 p.m. in a residential neighbourhood is not a place most runners expect to be in danger, and a neck wound inflicted on a stranger in that setting is the kind of violence that makes other runners recalculate routes they have used for years. That is why cases like this one, even before a suspect is known, change behaviour in a neighbourhood — fewer evening runs, more pairs running together, more calls to police about people loitering near paths.

The case also matters because of what it does not yet tell us. If the attack was random, it raises questions about path safety, lighting and patrols in southern Brooklyn. If it was targeted, it raises entirely different questions, about a relationship or dispute that has not yet come to light. Those two possibilities lead to very different public-safety responses, which is why detectives' next update — a suspect description, a motive, or even a statement ruling something out — will matter more than any speculation in the meantime.

Finally, the timing matters. The stabbing happened two days after a fatal truck crash at the same intersection, in a week when New York's streets have already been in the news for the wrong reasons. Communities absorb incidents in clusters, and two tragedies at one corner in three days will shape how Bath Beach residents think about that crossing long after the headlines move on.

What Happens Next

Detectives will continue to investigate the scene and seek witnesses, and the next police update is the development to watch. That update could include a suspect description, an arrest, a revised condition for the victim, or confirmation of details currently reported only through unnamed sources, such as how the woman was found. Each of those would materially change the story, and this article should be read alongside whatever police say next.

Anyone who was on or near the bike path near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue on Friday evening, or who saw anything unusual in the area around 8:15 p.m., may hold information that matters to the investigation, and should contact police. Witness accounts, dashcam footage and doorbell or business surveillance video from the surrounding streets are often what break cases like this one open in the first days.

For now, the confirmed facts stand as police reported them on Friday night: a 28-year-old woman, critically injured, a suspect at large, and an investigation under way. Updates will follow as police release more information.
