The NFL Week 8 Sunday slate arrives on November 1, 2026, with twelve games, one unbeaten team, one returning superstar quarterback, and an injury list long enough to reshape the playoff race. Baltimore travels to Buffalo with Lamar Jackson back after three games out, Minnesota puts its perfect 6-0 record on the line at Detroit, Kansas City visits Denver in an AFC West showdown, and Philadelphia plays Sunday Night Football at Washington with its receiving corps in tatters. Eight games kick off at 1:00 p.m. ET, three more follow in the late afternoon, and the Eagles and Commanders close the night at 8:20 p.m. ET, with Chicago at Seattle completing Week 8 on Monday night.

This is the weekend when the season starts to sort itself out. The midway point is approaching, the trade and injury pictures are hardening, and several contenders can no longer afford a bad Sunday. Green Bay has already opened the week with a 27-19 win over Carolina on Thursday night, a result that cost the Panthers their defensive coordinator. Everything else is still to play for, and the final injury reports from Friday, October 30, set the terms: Jackson, Rashee Rice and Jeremiyah Love are back or returning, while DeVonta Smith, Emeka Egbuka, Derwin James and RJ Harvey are out.

Key Points

• Lamar Jackson returns for Baltimore at Buffalo after missing three games with an ankle injury, having returned to full participation in practice.
• Minnesota, the NFL's last unbeaten team at 6-0, visits Detroit (4-2) at 1:00 p.m. ET, with the Lions missing safety Kerby Joseph through a knee injury.
• Kansas City (5-1) visits Denver (5-2) at 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS, with Rashee Rice returning but the Broncos missing RJ Harvey and Talanoa Hufanga.
• Philadelphia (2-5) faces Washington (1-4-1) on Sunday Night Football without DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks and Britain Covey.
• Twelve games are played Sunday, November 1, after Green Bay's 27-19 Thursday win over Carolina; Chicago at Seattle closes Week 8 on Monday, November 2.

What Happened

Week 8 began on Thursday night with Green Bay beating Carolina 27-19, and the fallout was immediate: the Panthers dismissed defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley, naming Todd Wash as interim defensive coordinator. It is the kind of midseason shake-up that tells you how thin patience has become, and it frames a Sunday on which several other coaching staffs will be judged just as harshly if their teams stumble.

The rest of the week is a study in contrasts. At the top of the league, Minnesota is unbeaten and Buffalo is 5-1, while Kansas City is trying to prove that a 20-3 loss at Seattle in Week 7, in which the Chiefs managed only 213 total yards, was a blip rather than a blueprint for stopping Patrick Mahomes. At the bottom, the Los Angeles Chargers are 0-6 and heading into a city derby against the Rams with a secondary held together by tape, while Tennessee is 1-6 and travelling to Cincinnati without three starters. In between, a cluster of 5-2 and 4-2 teams — Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Denver, Jacksonville, Cincinnati — play games that will decide who spends November chasing a division title and who spends it chasing a wild card.

The schedule itself is loaded. The early window alone contains Ravens at Bills, Vikings at Lions, Browns at Steelers, Falcons at Buccaneers, Cardinals at Cowboys, Raiders at Jets, Titans at Bengals and Colts at Jaguars, all at 1:00 p.m. ET. The late window brings Chargers at Rams at 4:05 p.m. ET, Patriots at Dolphins and Chiefs at Broncos at 4:25 p.m. ET. Then comes Sunday Night Football: Eagles at Commanders at 8:20 p.m. ET. Note the clocks, too: the games are played on the first Sunday after the United States switches from daylight saving time to Eastern Standard Time, so kickoffs are listed in the new time.

Background/Context

Minnesota's unbeaten run has not been built on blowouts. The Vikings survived Week 7 with a 16-10 win over Indianapolis, a game in which their defence protected a narrow lead and stopped a Colts comeback rather than overwhelming the opposition. That pattern — defensive discipline, few mistakes, enough offence — has carried them to 6-0, and it is exactly the formula Detroit must break. The Lions beat Green Bay 20-17 last time out, with Jake Bates kicking the winning field goal, and they have the offensive firepower to test Minnesota's composure. What they do not have is Kerby Joseph, their safety, ruled out with a knee injury after his practice window opened, while cornerback Roger McCreary is questionable with a foot problem. Minnesota safety Jay Ward is questionable with a knee injury of his own.

Baltimore's story is simpler and more urgent. The Ravens are 4-3, they lost 35-13 to Cincinnati in Week 7 when the Bengals scored five unanswered second-half touchdowns, and they have spent three games learning how hard life is without Jackson. His mobility changes the geometry of a defence: opponents must account for quarterback runs, designed movement and improvisation outside the pocket, which opens space for running backs and receivers. The risk is equally obvious. Returning from an ankle injury, Jackson does not need to reproduce every rushing pattern immediately; Baltimore needs offensive efficiency without exposing a recovering quarterback to unnecessary contact. Buffalo, at 5-1, has its own problems: wide receiver DJ Moore is managing a shoulder injury, tight end Dalton Kincaid has a chest issue, offensive tackle Spencer Brown has a back problem, and Tyrell Shavers is out with a knee injury. If Brown cannot play, protecting Josh Allen becomes a bigger job against a Baltimore pass rush that feeds off its secondary.

Kansas City's week has been about response. The Chiefs' unbeaten start ended at Seattle, and the questions since have been about protection and the passing game. Left tackle Josh Simmons is on injured reserve with a back injury, but Rashee Rice is back from a hamstring injury and gives Mahomes another option in the middle of the field and after the catch. Denver, 5-2, has won five of seven and can strengthen its AFC West position with a win, but the Broncos have ruled out running back RJ Harvey with a knee injury and safety Talanoa Hufanga with an ankle problem, while receiver Jaylen Waddle is questionable with a chest injury and Garett Bolles and Zach Allen are questionable too. Depth, more than star power, may decide this one.

NFL Week 8 Sunday: The Four Games That Matter Most

Start in Buffalo. Ravens at Bills is the weekend's biggest individual storyline because Jackson's return is the weekend's biggest individual event, and because both teams need the win for different reasons: Baltimore to stay in touch in the AFC North, Buffalo to keep pace at the top of the conference. The key matchup, as the preview reporting frames it, is Jackson's returning mobility against Buffalo's defensive organisation, with the Bills' own offensive injury decisions shaping the game at the other end.

Then Detroit. Vikings at Lions is the weekend's purest test: an unbeaten team against a 4-2 division rival that has already shown it can win a close game late. Minnesota's defensive consistency against Detroit's ability to generate explosive plays is the matchup to watch, and the secondary injuries on both sides — Joseph out, McCreary and Ward questionable — could decide which offence finds room downfield.

Then Denver. Chiefs at Broncos, 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS, is the AFC West game of the week so far. Kansas City holds a half-game lead in the division at 5-1 against Denver's 5-2, and the winner takes control of the race into November. Kansas City's passing game against a Denver defence dealing with injuries at several positions is the central battle; Denver's task is to protect its quarterback, sustain drives and stop Mahomes from repeatedly finding favourable matchups.

Finally, Washington. Eagles at Commanders on Sunday Night Football is a game neither team can afford to lose for morale reasons as much as standings reasons. Philadelphia is 2-5 after a 38-21 defeat at Dallas on Monday night, and the season is slipping. The quarterback situation has already been complicated by Jalen Hurts' extended absence, and now Smith is out with a hamstring injury, Wicks with an ankle injury and Covey with a knee problem, while linebacker Jihaad Campbell and cornerback Jonathan Jones are also out. Washington, 1-4-1, has its own receiving problems: Stefon Diggs is unavailable with a hamstring injury and Terry McLaurin's recovery has created further uncertainty. Whichever offence can manufacture dependable scoring chances with a depleted group probably wins a low-scoring game.

Reactions/Quotes

No fresh direct quotations from players or coaches were carried in the preview reports read for this article, so this section records reported assessments rather than inventing quotes. The reporting is consistent on the main judgments: Jackson is expected to start after full participation in practice; Rice's return is described as encouraging for Mahomes; and the Eagles' receiving losses are described as not interchangeable, with Smith's absence reducing established receiving quality and the further losses narrowing the coaching staff's personnel options. Carolina's coaching changes are the one hard personnel decision of the week so far, made in the immediate aftermath of the Thursday defeat, and they underline how quickly a single loss can become a staff decision in this league.

Elsewhere, the injury reporting speaks for itself. Tampa Bay must respond without rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka, ruled out with a foot injury after the Buccaneers scored 43 points against Carolina in Week 7, while Atlanta is without running back Brian Robinson (hamstring) after ending San Francisco's unbeaten start 24-20. The Chargers are without Derwin James (hamstring) and Deane Leonard (concussion) against a Rams team whose Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes in a 35-21 Week 7 win over Las Vegas. And in New England's trip to Miami, the availability of A.J. Brown (ankle and knee) and TreVeyon Henderson (illness) is questionable, while Miami, fresh from a 28-25 win over the Jets behind Malik Willis, has ruled out offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor with a concussion.

Why It Matters

This Sunday matters because the playoff picture is about to compress. With the midway point approaching, a loss for a 4-2 or 5-2 team is survivable; a loss that exposes a structural problem — a quarterback who cannot be protected, a secondary that cannot stay healthy, a receiving corps that cannot get open — is not. Kansas City, Philadelphia and Baltimore are all, in different ways, answering structural questions this weekend. Minnesota is answering a different one: whether an unbeaten record built on defence and discipline survives its first genuine road test against a fellow contender.

It also matters because injuries are now the story of the season as much as any team. The October 30 reports are a roll call of the players who define their teams' identities: Jackson, Smith, Egbuka, James, Harvey, Hufanga, Joseph, Waddle, Brown. The teams that manage this weekend's absences best — by adjusting schemes rather than simply replacing names — will be the teams that control November. That is why the smaller games matter too: Cleveland at Pittsburgh (both 5-2) is an AFC North eliminator in all but name; Jacksonville (4-2) against Indianapolis (2-5) is a chance for the Jaguars to consolidate in the AFC South; and Cincinnati (4-2) against Tennessee (1-6) is a game the Bengals cannot afford to treat casually after their statement win over Baltimore.

What Happens Next

After Sunday, Week 8 ends on Monday night with Chicago at Seattle at 8:15 p.m. ET. Seattle beat Kansas City 20-3 in Week 7 and will monitor several injuries of its own, including defensive tackles Byron Murphy II and Brandon Pili (both back), running back Zach Charbonnet and quarterback Drew Lock (both limited in Friday practice), while running back Jadarian Price is eligible to return from injured reserve after full participation. Chicago must monitor running back Kyle Monangai, who missed Friday practice with thumb and toe injuries.

Then the league turns to Week 9, and to the questions Sunday will answer. If Jackson looks like Jackson, Baltimore is a contender again. If Minnesota reaches 7-0, the conversation becomes about the last unbeaten team and a potential perfect-season watch. If Kansas City wins in Denver, the AFC West race tilts decisively; if Denver wins, it becomes a dogfight. And if Philadelphia loses again, with its receiving corps still broken, the conversation in that city will turn from rescue to rebuild. One Sunday, twelve games, and a season's worth of answers.
