The Mavericks Rockets 116-111 result on Friday, October 30, 2026, at American Airlines Center in Dallas was the night Dallas stopped being a team with promise and started looking like a team with a closing punch. Kyrie Irving scored 35 points and Cooper Flagg added 33 as the Mavericks erased an 11-point second-half deficit to beat the previously unbeaten Houston Rockets 116-111 in their NBA Cup group-play opener, handing Houston its first loss of the season and winning a third straight game.

Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg combined for 68 points, and Dallas erased an 11-point second-half deficit to beat visiting Houston 116-111 on Friday, according to Field Level Media's report on the game. Irving posted 35 points on 12-for-19 shooting and nine assists. Flagg scored 33 points on 13-for-19 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds, and the tandem totalled 27 points in the fourth quarter.

Irving set the tone for the comeback early in the final period, drilling two three-pointers as Dallas clawed back into a game that had looked like it was slipping away. Then Flagg took over the decisive stretch. He sank a floater and converted the three-point play with 1:40 left to play, giving the Mavericks a 105-100 lead, and the building, which had spent much of the night waiting for a reason to believe, finally had one.

Houston refused to go quietly. Flagg sank a turnaround jumper with 24.3 seconds left after Amen Thompson missed two free throws that would have tied the game with 42 seconds to play. Jabari Smith Jr. pulled the Rockets to within 109-108 with a three-pointer, but Daniel Gafford answered with two free throws, and Dallas closed the game out from the line. Kevin Durant led Houston with 28 points. Smith added 22.

The numbers underneath the headline tell the story of a duel rather than a blowout. Irving's 35 came on remarkable efficiency, 12 makes from 19 attempts, with nine assists against a defence that had not lost all season. Flagg's 33 came on 13-for-19 shooting, with nine rebounds and six assists, two steals and a block in the most complete performance of his young second season. NBC Sports noted that Flagg made the big-time bucket to lead Dallas to the win, and that he has now topped 26 points in each of his last three games.

This was not the first meeting between these teams this season, and that history is what made Friday's result feel like a statement rather than a surprise. Houston won the season opener 128-110 at Toyota Center on October 21, leading by six after the first quarter and then outscoring Dallas 38-12 in the second for a 70-38 halftime lead. Flagg scored 32 points in that game, the most by a teenager in a season opener in NBA history, but the second quarter undid Dallas, and coach Dusty May said afterwards that the group had lost its composure and its principles in transition defence.

Friday was, in that sense, a revenge game with a tournament edge. The NBA Cup opener meant the result counted for more than an ordinary late-October night, and Houston arrived 5-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season, having won three of its first five by double figures. Dallas arrived 3-2, winners of three of four since the opener, including a 120-96 win on Wednesday that handed the Oklahoma City Thunder their first loss. The rematch, then, was a test of whether Dallas had actually fixed the things that broke in the opener, and for three quarters the answer was unclear.

Flagg's own recent history added another layer. He left the October 23 win at Indiana after a flagrant foul, did not return for the second half, and was later revealed to have a mild left shoulder sprain on MRI. He missed the following night's 122-106 loss to San Antonio, returned on Monday with 29 points and 11 assists in a 113-109 win over Miami, and then had 26 points, five rebounds and eight assists against Oklahoma City. Through four games before Friday he was averaging 25.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.8 assists. Friday's 33 points, on the same shoulder that had kept him out a week earlier, answered the only remaining question about him, and the Yardbarker report on the game noted he is showing no ill-effects of the injury.

The game was won in the fourth quarter, and it was won by two players taking turns. Irving's two early three-pointers in the period steadied Dallas and cut into a deficit that had reached 11 points in the second half. That is what veteran stars are for: not just scoring, but scoring at the moment when a comeback stops feeling theoretical and starts feeling possible. Irving, still working his way back from the knee injury that ended his last season, drew MVP chants during a season-high performance, and the crowd's reaction said as much about the night as the box score.

Flagg's contribution was different and, in the long run, more important. His floater and three-point play with 1:40 left gave Dallas a 105-100 lead, the kind of possession that defines a young star: the ball in his hands, the clock winding down, the defence set, and the finish anyway. His turnaround jumper with 24.3 seconds left, after Thompson's missed free throws, was the dagger, and it came from a 19-year-old who, a week earlier, could not lift his left shoulder comfortably enough to play.

Houston's side of the ledger deserves its own respect. Durant's 28 points and Smith's 22 kept the Rockets in a game they trailed late, and Thompson's trip to the line with 42 seconds left was a genuine chance to tie. But championship-level teams win the last two minutes, and on Friday Dallas did. Gafford's two free throws after Smith's three-pointer were the quiet, unglamorous plays that close games out, and they mattered as much as any highlight.

No post-game quotations from either locker room were included in the Field Level Media report read for this article, so this account sticks to what the game itself said rather than inventing a voice for it. What the game said was unusually clear. A Dallas team that had been embarrassed in the second quarter of the season opener beat the same opponent by outscoring it down the stretch, with its two best players combining for 68 points and 27 in the fourth quarter alone.

The earlier words that do belong to this story are Flagg's own, from after the opener, when he was honest about Dallas' recurring problem. 'It is difficult,' he said then. 'Down, what, 32 at halftime, 34? It is not ideal. It is not where you want to be. And honestly, that has been the thing for us is second quarter. It is like all preseason, it has been bad second quarter going into the half, kind of come out in the third quarter and dig ourselves out of a hole. So we gotta find ways to combat that and have better second quarters and leave off on a good foot going into that.' On Friday, Dallas dug itself out of a hole again, but this time it finished the job, and the difference between the two Houston games is the difference between a team learning a lesson and a team applying one.

The win matters for Dallas for a reason that goes beyond one night in the standings. Beating the unbeaten Rockets, in an NBA Cup game, after trailing by 11 in the second half, is the kind of result that changes how a team sees itself. The Mavericks are now 4-2 with three straight wins, and they have beaten Oklahoma City and Houston in the same week, the two teams that had looked like the early-season class of the West. A team that does that is not sneaking up on anyone anymore.

It matters for Flagg's development even more. A second-year player who scores 33 points on 13-for-19 shooting against an unbeaten team, a week after a shoulder sprain that was supposed to cost him multiple games, is not just putting up numbers. He is building a reputation for showing up in the biggest moments of the biggest games, and that reputation, once earned, changes how opponents defend him and how teammates trust him. His averages through the early season, now better than 25 points a game with nearly seven assists, already mark him as one of the league's best young players. Friday marked him as a closer.

It matters for Houston, too, but in the opposite way. A first loss is rarely a crisis, and 5-1 remains an excellent start, but the manner of it will sting: a double-digit second-half lead given away, two missed free throws with a chance to tie, and a closing stretch owned by the other team's stars. The Rockets will learn more from this loss than from any of their five wins, and how they respond is the next chapter of their season.

For Dallas, the next test is consistency. Three straight wins, including two against unbeaten teams, is a run. Turning a run into a season means winning the games that do not come with a headline, and it means keeping Flagg healthy: the shoulder that looked fine on Friday will be watched closely, and the Mavericks have already shown they will not risk his long-term health for October wins. Watch Irving's minutes and Flagg's usage as the schedule thickens, and watch whether the transition defence that collapsed in the opener stays fixed.

For Houston, the next test is response. The Rockets' 5-0 start was built on defence and depth, and neither deserted them entirely on Friday: Durant and Smith combined for 50 points, and Thompson had the ball with a chance to tie in the final minute. The fix is smaller than the scoreline suggests, and it starts with closing possessions. The rematch, whenever it comes, will be appointment viewing, because these two teams now have a genuine early-season rivalry, built on a 38-12 quarter in October and a 27-point fourth quarter in the return game.

Both teams will also keep an eye on the NBA Cup picture, where a group-play win over an unbeaten rival is worth more than a narrow one. But the bigger picture, for both, is the regular season: Dallas trying to prove this week was a turning point rather than a hot streak, and Houston trying to prove a first loss was a lesson rather than a crack.
