Reserve Ronald Holland II sparked a dominant third quarter with 12 of his season-high 18 points for Detroit, which took control en route to a victory over winless Brooklyn on Friday in New York in an NBA Cup game, according to Field Level Media's report. After shooting 28.6 percent in his first five games, Holland made four of five shots in the third when the Pistons outscored Brooklyn 36-17.

Cade Cunningham scored a game-high 20 points for the Pistons, who have won two in a row. Duncan Robinson added 17 points. Moritz Wagner finished with 16 points for the Nets, who are off to their second straight 0-5 start. Brooklyn committed 24 turnovers that led to 27 points.

The game had not started as a rout. Brooklyn held Detroit to 7-of-19 shooting and took a 28-21 lead through the opening quarter, and the Nets were still in it at halftime, trailing only 56-49 after John Collins dunked, Javonte Green sank a three late in the shot clock and Thompson converted a reverse layup in the final 75 seconds. Then the third quarter happened. With Cunningham getting a rest, Holland sank a pair of free throws, a layup and a pair of threes in a span of 2:32 that turned a 75-61 lead into an 87-64 advantage with 2:20 left in the third. Cunningham had led Detroit with seven straight points shortly before Holland helped finish things off, and the game was, for practical purposes, over.

Robinson's contribution came earlier and mattered just as much. He contributed 10 of his 17 points in the second quarter when the Pistons erased a 10-point deficit by outscoring Brooklyn 35-21. That run turned a game Brooklyn was controlling into a game Detroit led at halftime, and it set up everything Holland did after the break. Brooklyn shot 40.3 percent from the field, missed 26 of 37 three-point tries and allowed 25 points off 24 turnovers, a line that reads like a summary of a team beating itself as much as being beaten.

Detroit's season, a week in, is starting to look like something real. The Pistons have now won two in a row, they opened the season by beating Boston, and they are doing it with contributions from up and down the roster: Cunningham's 20 as the steady star, Robinson's 17 as the veteran shooter, Holland's 18 as the young reserve finding his range. A team that wins with different heroes on different nights is a team that is hard to prepare for, and Detroit is becoming exactly that.

Brooklyn's season, a week in, is starting to look like something familiar, and that is the problem. The Nets are the Eastern Conference's lone winless team, off to their second straight 0-5 start. Last season, Brooklyn dropped seven straight to start a 20-62 campaign. The Sacramento Kings (0-5) are the NBA's other winless team after the first full week of the season, which means Brooklyn is not alone in its misery, but misery loves company only up to a point: sooner or later, a winless team has to win, and the longer it waits, the heavier every loss feels.

Holland's own arc is the subplot worth following. Shooting 28.6 percent in his first five games is a cold start for any young player, and cold starts have a way of shrinking a player's minutes and confidence in equal measure. Friday was the opposite: four of five shots in the third quarter, 12 points in the period, and a 2:32 burst that broke the game open. Young players remember nights like that, and so do coaches, and Holland's role from here may look different from his role before Friday.

The game was broken open in two runs, and they came from two different players, which is the point. The first run belonged to Robinson in the second quarter: 10 of his 17 points as Detroit erased a 10-point deficit by outscoring Brooklyn 35-21. That run changed the game from a Brooklyn lead into a Detroit halftime advantage, and it did so with the most reliable weapon in basketball, a veteran shooter getting hot at exactly the right time.

The second run belonged to Holland in the third: 36-17 as a team, 12 points as an individual, and a 2:32 personal burst, two free throws, a layup, two threes, that turned 75-61 into 87-64. Cunningham's seven straight points just before Holland's burst were the bridge between the two runs, the star holding the game steady while the reserve got ready to break it open. That is how good teams work: the star keeps it close, the shooter flips it, and the young player finishes it.

Brooklyn's numbers explain why neither run was ever answered. Twenty-four turnovers leading to 27 points is a giveaway rate that no defence can survive, because it hands the opponent its easiest offence, and 11-of-37 from three is a shooting night that never lets a team climb back. The Nets' first-quarter lead, built on holding Detroit to 7-of-19 shooting, was real, but it was built on Detroit missing, not on Brooklyn imposing itself, and when Detroit stopped missing, Brooklyn had nothing else to fall back on.

No post-game quotations from either locker room were included in the Field Level Media report read for this article, so this account sticks to what the numbers and the game flow say rather than inventing a voice for either side. What the numbers say is unusually clear. A Detroit team that trailed by ten in the second quarter won by sixteen, outscoring Brooklyn 36-17 in the third, forcing 24 turnovers, and getting 18 points from a reserve who had shot 28.6 percent in his first five games.

The quiet statement of the night belongs to Holland. A young player who starts a season cold and then breaks a game open in the third quarter has announced something, not just to the crowd but to his own bench: that he can be trusted when the game is there to be won. Coaches remember that. So do teammates. The next time Detroit needs a third-quarter spark, Holland will be the first name that comes to mind, and that, more than any single box score, is what Friday changed.

The win matters for Detroit because of the way it was built. A 16-point road win in a Cup game, with the star scoring 20, the veteran shooter adding 17 and the young reserve breaking it open in the third, is the profile of a team with real depth rather than a team with one good player. Two wins in a row, on top of an opening win over Boston, is the start of a pattern, and patterns, not single games, are what carry teams through a season.

It matters for Brooklyn in the opposite way, and the history makes it heavier. A second straight 0-5 start, following a season that began 0-7 and finished 20-62, is not just a slow start; it is a trend, and trends have a way of becoming identities if they are not broken quickly. The Nets' problems on Friday were not mysterious: 24 turnovers, 11-of-37 from three, and a third quarter lost 36-17. Those are fixable problems, but they have to be fixed before the record makes them feel permanent.

It also matters as a small reminder of how quickly an NBA season sorts itself. A week ago, every team was 0-0. Now Detroit is a team winning with different heroes every night, and Brooklyn is the East's lone winless team, again. The season is long, but the stories it tells in week one have a habit of sticking around.

For Detroit, the next test is sustaining this balance. Two wins in a row is a run; turning it into a season means Cunningham staying steady, Robinson staying hot, and Holland building on Friday rather than treating it as a one-off. Watch Holland's minutes and shot selection: if Friday earns him a bigger role, Detroit's bench becomes one of the more dangerous second units in the East.

For Brooklyn, the next test is simpler and harder: win a game. The fixes are visible on the stat sheet, fewer turnovers, better three-point selection, and a third quarter that does not end 36-17, but fixes on paper are not fixes on the floor. The Nets need a night when the turnovers stay under fifteen and the threes fall at a respectable rate, and they need it soon, before 0-5 becomes 0-7 and the season starts to feel like last season.

Both teams will also keep an eye on the NBA Cup picture, where Detroit's group-play win and 16-point margin are early advantages. But the bigger picture, for both, is the regular season: Detroit trying to prove this week was a beginning rather than a blip, and Brooklyn trying to prove this week was a beginning it can still escape.
