The Haas Formula 1 team has dropped Esteban Ocon for the rest of the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend and handed reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa a shock race debut, in one of the most abrupt mid-weekend driver changes in recent Formula 1 history. The Haas Ocon Hirakawa Mexico switch was announced on Saturday morning, October 31, 2026, just hours before final practice and qualifying at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, and it leaves the Frenchman watching from the sidelines for a race he had already started preparing for on Friday.

Key Points

• Haas announced on Saturday, October 31, 2026, that Ryo Hirakawa will replace Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend.
• Hirakawa, 32, will contest final practice, qualifying on Saturday and Sunday's 71-lap race, marking his Formula 1 race debut.
• Haas gave no reason for the switch, saying only that no further statements will be made, but a team spokesperson confirmed it was not due to illness.
• Hirakawa drove Ocon's car in Friday's first practice session, finishing 15th overall in his third free-practice outing of the season.
• Ocon, who returned for Friday's second practice and finished 13th, is already confirmed to leave Haas at the end of the 2026 season.

What Happened

Haas released a short statement on Saturday morning confirming the change. It read: "TGR Haas F1 Team reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa will replace Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix, Saturday 31 October - Sunday 1 November." The statement added that Hirakawa had taken part in Friday's first practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, his third free-practice outing of the season driving the VF-26, finishing 15th overall, and that he would partner team-mate Oliver Bearman through final practice and qualifying on Saturday and Sunday's 71-lap grand prix, marking his Formula 1 race debut. It closed with a single line: "No further statements will be made at this time."

The timing made the announcement a genuine shock. Ocon had completed both of Friday's practice sessions without any reported incident. Hirakawa drove the car in the opening session as part of Formula 1's rookie practice programme, then handed it back to Ocon, who finished 13th in the second session. By Saturday morning, however, the seat had changed hands. Hirakawa was to take over from final practice onwards, giving him just one hour of running before qualifying to prepare for his first grand prix start.

One detail from Friday did attract attention after the announcement. During the second practice session, Ocon had a disagreement with his race engineer, Laura Mueller, over team radio about whether to stick to a planned soft-tyre run or switch to medium tyres, with the team opting for the mediums. Haas has not linked that exchange to the driver change, and no official reason has been given, so any connection between the two remains speculation rather than fact. What is confirmed is narrower: the team would not explain the move, but it did confirm to reporters that illness was not the reason.

Background and Context

Hirakawa is not a typical rookie. The 32-year-old Japanese driver was born on March 7, 1994, and built his reputation in Japan before moving to world endurance racing. He won the Super GT championship in 2017, then joined Toyota Gazoo Racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship, winning the championship in 2022 and again in 2023 alongside Sebastien Buemi and Brendon Hartley, and winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2022 in his debut season at the race. That Toyota relationship brought him to Haas: when Toyota and Haas formed a technical partnership, Hirakawa joined the American team as a reserve driver in 2025.

Since then he has been a regular presence in Friday practice sessions, driving for McLaren, Alpine and Haas in practice outings since the end of 2024. His Mexico City outing on Friday was his third free-practice run of the 2026 season with Haas, adding to four outings with the team last year, and his best lap in that session was reported as 1:19.982. He had also been a contender for a full-time Haas race seat in 2027, taking part in the team's evaluation process before losing out to Brazilian prospect Rafael Camara, who was confirmed for 2027 at the end of September. Hirakawa's debut therefore arrives through an unexpected door rather than the one he had been aiming for.

Ocon's position at Haas was already coming to an end. The 30-year-old Frenchman joined the team in 2025, but Haas had already announced that Camara would replace him from 2027, and reports suggest Ocon is likely to become Aston Martin's reserve driver next season. His time at Haas has been difficult: he has been comfortably beaten by Bearman over the course of the season, according to Autosport's assessment. There is also a precedent for an abrupt ending in Ocon's career. His stint at Alpine ended in 2024 when he was replaced by his successor, Jack Doohan, for the season finale in Abu Dhabi, before his contract had fully run its course.

Haas Ocon Hirakawa Mexico Switch Explained

The Haas Ocon Hirakawa Mexico switch is unusual because mid-weekend driver changes are rare in modern Formula 1. Teams normally change drivers between races, not between practice sessions, and when they do make a change mid-weekend it is usually because of illness, injury or a disciplinary matter. Haas has ruled out illness, has not mentioned injury, and has said nothing further, which is why the move has been described across the paddock as a mystery. The team's statement was deliberately brief, and it added that it would make no comment on its driver line-up for the next race in Brazil, in keeping with that silence.

For Hirakawa, the practical challenge is enormous. A Formula 1 debut is normally preceded by weeks of preparation, simulator work and media duties. He instead steps into the car for final practice on Saturday, must learn the track at full racing speed in a single session, and then contest qualifying, where a mistake can leave him at the back of the grid for a 71-lap race on Sunday. He will also be the oldest driver to make a Formula 1 debut since Andre Lotterer, then also 32, drove for Caterham at the Belgian Grand Prix in 2014. Age, in this case, is not a mark against him: it reflects a long career in endurance racing that has finally led to a grand prix seat.

The Mexico City circuit adds its own difficulty. The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez sits at high altitude, where the thin air changes how cars generate downforce and how engines and brakes behave, and its Foro Sol stadium section, where thousands of fans pack the grandstands around a slow sequence of corners, is one of the most atmospheric and unforgiving parts of the track. It was in that stadium section on Friday that Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson collided in practice, earning both drivers one-place grid penalties, a reminder that even experienced drivers can be caught out here.

Reactions and Quotes

Haas itself has said almost nothing beyond its statement, and that silence has become the story. The full statement read: "TGR Haas F1 Team reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa will replace Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix, Saturday 31 October - Sunday 1 November. Hirakawa (32), a two-time winner of the FIA World Endurance Championship (2022, 2023) and 24 Hours of Le Mans winner (2022) with Toyota GAZOO Racing, participated in FP1 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on Friday 30 October - his third free practice outing of the season driving the VF-26, finishing 15th overall. The Japanese driver will partner team mate Ollie Bearman through final practice and qualifying on Saturday and Sunday's 71-lap grand prix - Hirakawa's Formula 1 race debut. No further statements will be made at this time."

Ocon's own words after Friday's second practice now read very differently in hindsight. He said: "It's always challenging when you miss out on a session, but Ryo did a good job and collected some valuable data." At the time, that was a routine comment about sharing a car with a reserve driver in first practice. Within hours, the reserve driver he was praising had his seat.

Across the paddock, reaction has focused on the abruptness of the move and on what it means for the final races of the season. With Ocon already leaving at the end of the year and Camara waiting for 2027, the question now is whether Hirakawa's Mexico City outing is a one-off or the start of a longer run-in to the season. Haas has refused to answer that question, and until it does, every session Hirakawa completes will be watched as closely as the race itself.

Why It Matters

The switch matters for three reasons. First, it changes the Mexico City Grand Prix itself. A debutant starting a 71-lap race at a high-altitude circuit, after a single practice session, is one of the weekend's biggest storylines, and his performance alongside Bearman will shape how Haas scores points on Sunday. Second, it raises a question about how Formula 1 teams handle drivers who are already on their way out. If a team can sideline a driver mid-weekend without explanation, other drivers in similar positions will be watching closely.

Third, it matters for Hirakawa and for Japanese motorsport. A Japanese driver making a Formula 1 debut is a rare event, and doing so as a 32-year-old endurance champion, rather than as a teenage junior-programme graduate, tells a different story about how a driver can reach the top of the sport. His performance in Mexico City could decide whether he is remembered as a footnote to a strange weekend or as a driver who seized an unexpected chance.

What Happens Next

Final practice takes place on Saturday, followed by qualifying, which will set the provisional grid for Sunday's race. Hirakawa's qualifying performance will determine where he starts, and Sunday's 71-lap grand prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez will be his first competitive Formula 1 race. Haas has said it will not comment on its line-up for the next race in Brazil, so whether Ocon returns for that event, or whether Hirakawa keeps the seat, remains unconfirmed. The team has also not said whether Ocon will take any further part in the 2026 season.

For fans, the immediate focus is simpler: a driver who went to bed on Friday night as a reserve will wake up on Saturday as a grand prix driver. How he handles that transformation, in front of a packed Mexico City crowd, will be one of the defining stories of the weekend.
