Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, 2026, turning a tense Premier League contest into a second-half procession as Morgan Rogers opened the scoring and Cole Palmer converted a penalty after Lisandro Martinez was sent off. The result stretched Manchester United's winless run to nine matches in all competitions and piled fresh pressure on head coach Michael Carrick, whose side had chances to lead before half-time but collapsed after the break.

• Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead in the 50th minute, driving straight through the heart of the United defence before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
• Lisandro Martinez was sent off in the second half after two yellow cards in quick succession, the second for a raised forearm into Wesley Fofana at a corner.
• Cole Palmer scored from the penalty spot in the 64th minute, his effort squirming under Lammens despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to it.
• Estevao had a third Chelsea goal disallowed for a narrow offside, while Bryan Mbeumo struck the crossbar for United late on.
• Manchester United have now gone nine straight matches without a win, their worst such run since 1988, with Martinez suspended for the trip to Aston Villa.

What Happened

For almost an hour this looked like a contest United could win. The visitors, beaten heavily by Como and Bournemouth in recent weeks, started brightly at Stamford Bridge and created the better first-half chances. Bruno Fernandes, restored to the starting line-up after being benched against Bournemouth following his open criticism of Carrick's tactics, wasted the best of them, blazing over at the end of a rapid counter-attack. Matheus Cunha also made a mess of a glorious opening, and Fernandes later drilled a cross too hard for a team-mate to convert. By the interval, United had created chances worth 1.09 expected goals to Chelsea's 0.28, yet the score was still 0-0.

The game turned five minutes after the restart. Rogers collected a pass from Romeo Lavia inside the centre circle and was allowed to run directly at the United defence. Carlos Baleba's challenge arrived too late, Leny Yoro was out of position and Harry Maguire could not get across in time. Rogers kept his composure, committed the defenders and dinked the ball over Lammens for 1-0. It was a goal of individual brilliance, but also of baffling defending: a player of Rogers' quality was given the freedom of the park, and he punished United for it.

Thirteen minutes later the match was effectively over. Martinez, already booked for pulling Rogers' shirt, needlessly jumped into Fofana with a raised forearm as Chelsea attacked a corner, catching the centre-back in the face. Referee Peter Bankes consulted the pitchside monitor after a VAR review, awarded a penalty and showed Martinez a second yellow card. Palmer stepped up and, although Lammens got decent contact on the spot-kick, the ball trickled into the bottom corner for 2-0.

Chelsea toyed with United for the final quarter. Estevao, on a rare start since Xabi Alonso took charge of the Blues, thought he had made it 3-0 when he crashed Palmer's pass into the top corner, only for VAR to rule the Brazilian youngster offside by a razor-thin margin. At the other end, Mbeumo struck the crossbar via a fine save from Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, while Palmer and Valentin Barco passed up huge chances in ten minutes of stoppage time. The home fans sang 'sacked in the morning' at Carrick as the clock ran down.

Background: A Crisis Deepening at Old Trafford

Carrick seemed set to face the sack earlier in the week after United's heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth, but he was kept in charge for Saturday's Premier League contest, matchday nine of the season. The stay of execution did not last long. This was United's ninth straight match without a victory in all competitions, a run not seen at the club since 1988, and the manner of the defeat — dominant for 45 minutes, then undone by one solo goal and one moment of madness — summed up a season sliding out of control.

Martinez has been at the centre of the storm. The Argentina defender, a veteran of two World Cup finals, drew attention two weeks ago by calling out the club's hierarchy over summer recruitment in a post-match interview, and he had already spoken publicly to criticise United's lack of spending to bolster Carrick's squad. On Saturday he was outplayed by Rogers for the opening goal and then lost his head entirely. His one-match ban rules him out of the trip to Aston Villa, with Maguire, Noussair Mazraoui and Ayden Heaven the likely candidates to fill in at centre-back.

Chelsea, by contrast, badly needed this win. Alonso's side had suffered a poor result last weekend and only an okay cup performance in midweek, and Rogers admitted afterwards that the squad knew it had to come out strong. The first half was tough, he said, with United playing well, but in the second half Chelsea stamped their authority on the game and deserved the win. Rogers is now just the second Premier League player to reach ten goal involvements in all competitions this season, with six goals and four assists, behind only Erling Haaland on thirteen.

Chelsea Beat Manchester United 2-0: The Turning Points

Three moments decided the match, and each of them exposed a different United weakness. The first was Rogers' goal: a failure of organisation, with no midfielder tracking the run, no defender stepping up and no cover when Maguire was dragged across. The second was Martinez's dismissal: a failure of discipline from one of the squad's most experienced players, at precisely the moment United needed calm. The third was Palmer's penalty: a failure of execution from Lammens, who did get a hand to the ball but could not keep it out, a small detail that turned a lifeline into a rout.

United's attacking numbers told the same story in reverse. Their second-half expected goals total was just 0.08, against Chelsea's 2.33, after a first half in which they had been the better side. Joshua Zirkzee replaced Amad Diallo as time ran away from them, but there was no route back with ten men and no confidence. Carrick did not acknowledge Martinez as the defender walked off and down the tunnel, a detail noticed by the television cameras and seized on by pundits after the match.

Reactions and Quotes

Rogers, named player of the match, told TNT Sports: 'Massive. Difficult week. Poor result last weekend, and then okay in the cup. We knew we had to come out strong. First half was tough. They played well. Second half, we really stamped our authority, which was good, and deserved the win.' Asked what he was thinking as he ran through, he said: 'Just to try and commit the defenders. Then the gap kind of opened up. All of a sudden I was in on goal, and I just had to try and stay composed. Luckily, it went in.'

The pundits were far less forgiving of Martinez. Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said on PL Match Centre: 'Morgan Rogers just walked straight through. You expect a player who has played in two World Cup finals to do better. He's not a suitable player for Manchester United. He let Michael Carrick down.' Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist, commentating for TNT Sports, called the challenge 'unacceptable, absolutely unacceptable', adding: 'He runs right across, look, absolutely crazy, crazy.' McCoist added that Carrick 'can't look at him and nor should he.'

Joe Cole, also on TNT Sports, said of the penalty incident: 'I'm actually lost for words, because there must be conversations. You're an example to these players, and you go and do something like that in a moment like this.' McCoist agreed the defending was, in his words, ridiculous: 'You're not even wrong side, you're not any side. You're just marching right across and jumping into him. That's a penalty.'

Carrick himself could not hide his frustration in a half-time interview with broadcasters, and his mood soured further with the disastrous start to the second period. When he went to applaud the travelling supporters at full time, he was welcomed with applause, but the reception turned sour when captain Fernandes approached — the United fans still have not forgiven him for his comments after the Como match.

Why It Matters

This result matters far beyond three points. For Chelsea, it is a statement win under Alonso, built on a second-half performance of real authority and on two of their most important attacking players delivering in the biggest moments. Rogers' rise continues: an England international who credits Carrick for revitalising his career during a spell together at Middlesbrough, he dealt his former boss a potentially decisive blow.

For United, the defeat sharpens every question hanging over the club. A ninth straight match without a win, a senior defender sent off for an avoidable offence, a captain whose relationship with the supporters is strained, and a manager whose position was already in doubt before kick-off: that is a crisis, not a blip. The trip to Aston Villa now comes without Martinez, and with the pressure on Carrick higher than ever. If the board kept him in charge to see a reaction at Stamford Bridge, this was not the reaction they wanted.

The wider Premier League picture matters too. Chelsea's win keeps them in touch with the leading pack after nine matchdays, while United drift further from the European places and deeper into a run of form that, historically, ends managerial reigns. Saturday's match will be remembered for Rogers' run and Martinez's red card, but its real significance may be what happens next at Old Trafford.

What Happens Next

Chelsea's next task is to build on this performance rather than treat it as a one-off. Alonso will want the second-half intensity from the start in their next fixture, and Estevao's lively display — a disallowed goal apart — suggests the Brazilian youngster is pushing hard for a regular starting place. Palmer's penalty took him to a half-century of goal involvements for Chelsea, a milestone that underlines how central he remains to everything the Blues do in attack.

United, meanwhile, must regroup quickly before Aston Villa. Carrick will have to decide whether to change his defensive shape, who replaces the suspended Martinez, and how to restore confidence in a dressing room that has now gone nine games without winning. Fernandes' form and his standing with the supporters will be watched closely, as will the board's patience. Another defeat, and the 'sacked in the morning' chants heard at Stamford Bridge may follow Carrick back to Manchester.

The Premier League continues on Sunday with the rest of matchday nine, and the Mexico City Grand Prix and the final weekend of midterm campaigning will dominate the American sporting and political conversation. But for one Saturday in west London, the story was simple: Chelsea were ruthless when it mattered, and Manchester United were not.
