Notre Dame Navy 2026 ended in a 35-13 win for the sixth-ranked Fighting Irish on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, but the scoreline hides how close the game felt for most of the first half. Notre Dame trailed Navy late in the second quarter, looked out of sorts on offence, and only pulled away after half-time, when a more balanced attack and a much sharper defence turned a one-point lead into a comfortable victory.

The win lifts Notre Dame to 7-1 and, crucially, keeps the Irish on course for the showdown that has shaped their season for weeks: top-ranked Miami visit South Bend on November 7. Navy, beaten for a ninth straight time in this series, fall to 2-6, but the Midshipmen will take real pride from a first half in which their triple-option offence controlled the clock, scored on every possession, and briefly led a team favoured by as many as 31.5 points.

Key Points

• No. 6 Notre Dame beat Navy 35-13 on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
• Notre Dame trailed 13-7 late in the first half and led only 14-13 at half-time before scoring 21 unanswered second-half points.
• Nolan James Jr. scored twice, including a 52-yard run to close the first half, and Jonaz Walton scored to open the second half.
• Jerome Bettis Jr. caught his first career touchdown, a 31-yard strike that capped a two-play, 43-yard drive in 11 seconds.
• Marcus Freeman earned his 50th career win as a head coach, and Notre Dame now host No. 1 Miami on November 7.

What Happened

Navy struck first, and the opening told the story of the first half. After Notre Dame's opening kickoff went out of bounds, the Midshipmen marched behind their triple-option running game, converted a fourth down, and kicked a 38-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Notre Dame answered with a pass-led drive of their own, quarterback CJ Carr completing five of seven passes for 60 yards and finding Micah Gilbert for an 11-yard touchdown, but the pattern was set: Navy wanted to shorten the game, hold the ball, and keep Notre Dame's offence on the sideline.

By the end of the first quarter Navy had more than double Notre Dame's time of possession, and the Midshipmen added a second field goal early in the second quarter to lead 6-3. Worse for the Irish, the first half then turned on an injury. Starting linebacker and captain Drayk Bowen was helped from the field, and on the very next play Navy scored their first touchdown to lead 13-7 with 1:45 left in the half. Notre Dame were, in the words of the live coverage, officially on upset watch.

The Irish response was immediate and, in hindsight, decisive. With a timeout used late in the half to set up the score, Nolan James Jr. broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run, his previous career long just 31 yards against Stanford, to give Notre Dame a 14-13 half-time lead. It was the kind of swing head coach Marcus Freeman talks about when he stresses winning the middle eight minutes of a game, and Notre Dame completed it by scoring again to open the second half, Jonaz Walton running in from three yards out for a 21-13 lead.

From there the game changed completely. The Irish defence, which had allowed Navy to score on every first-half possession, forced a punt on the first drive after half-time, then held Navy to just 31 yards on 12 plays across three second-half drives. Notre Dame scored on all three of their second-half drives before a late fourth-down attempt failed, and the fourth quarter belonged to the younger receivers Freeman's staff had challenged to step up. Bettis Jr. caught three straight passes for 30 yards on the first series of the second half, then finished the scoring with his 31-yard touchdown, the first of his career, on a drive that lasted two plays and 11 seconds.

The final quarter scores read 7-7-14-7 for Notre Dame against 3-10-0-0 for Navy, a neat summary of a game that was tense for two quarters and one-sided for two. Notre Dame closed the game out in the final minutes, driving toward the red zone before the clock ran down on a 35-13 win.

Notre Dame Navy 2026: Background and Series History

This is one of college football's oldest and most respected rivalries, dating back to 1927, and Notre Dame's win extends their run in the series to nine straight victories and 14 wins in the last 15 meetings. The fixture has always carried a particular character: Navy's disciplined, option-based running game against Notre Dame's bigger, more athletic roster, played this year not on either campus but at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, in Foxborough.

Notre Dame arrived at 6-1, ranked sixth, after their first off-Saturday of the season and a loss to BYU that had exposed problems in the passing game. Navy arrived at 2-5, a struggling service academy side, but one that had already shown it could make life awkward for better teams by controlling possession and limiting the number of drives in a game. The betting market reflected that gap: Notre Dame were favoured by 30 points, with some books stretching the line to 31.5, and the total set at 56.5.

What made Saturday different from a routine mismatch was the context around it. Notre Dame were playing in their striking "icy whites" alternate uniforms, gold helmets gleaming in the autumn sunshine at a 54-degree kickoff, but they were also looking ahead. Next Saturday brings the game the whole season has been building toward, against a Miami side ranked No. 1 in the country. Former Alabama coach Nick Saban said on ESPN's College GameDay on Saturday morning that he still believes in Notre Dame, picking the Irish as a championship contender and saying he would like to see them against Miami, with confidence in their defence and in Carr. Saturday was therefore a test of focus as much as talent: could Notre Dame take care of business against Navy without peeking ahead?

For much of the first half, the answer looked uncertain. Carr, who the South Bend Tribune noted was out of sorts for a second straight game even with two weeks to clear the cobwebs after the BYU loss, struggled early to find passing lanes over the middle, and his usual pinpoint accuracy was missing. Notre Dame ran the ball just five times in the first half, with only one back touching the ball, a balance the live coverage called "absolutely terrible" at half-time. Navy, by contrast, knew exactly who they were: run, run again, convert on fourth down, and bleed the clock.

Reactions and Quotes

The post-game grades from the South Bend Tribune captured the mood: offence B-plus, defence B, special teams B, coaching B, overall B. That is a fair report card for a team that won by 22 points but never looked comfortable until the second half. The Tribune's Mike Berardino wrote that "disaster [was] averted" for Notre Dame, a phrase that will sting in South Bend even in victory, because for 30 minutes it genuinely felt possible.

Freeman's milestone deserves its own note. The win was his 50th as a head coach against just 13 defeats, and it improved Notre Dame to 10-3 under Freeman in active NFL stadiums, with the only losses coming in 2025 against Miami, in 2024 in Atlanta against Ohio State in the College Football Playoff title game, and in 2021 in Glendale against Oklahoma State. Those three defeats are a reminder of the level Notre Dame aspire to, and of why next Saturday matters so much.

The most human story of the day belonged to Bettis Jr., son of NFL legend Jerome Bettis. After only three veteran receivers had taken almost every snap in the loss at No. 9 BYU, Notre Dame's coaches challenged the younger receivers to step up, and Bettis answered. Three catches for 30 yards on the opening second-half series, then a 31-yard touchdown that put the Irish up 35-13, gave the afternoon its signature moment. Another son of an NFL star, Elijah Burress, thought he had scored on the next drive, only to be ruled out of bounds while making the catch, a reminder of how fine the margins are for young players trying to earn trust.

On the other side, Navy's effort should not be lost in the final score. The Midshipmen scored on every first-half possession, led late in the second quarter, and made a top-six team look ordinary for a half. Freshman Rodney Dunham's hustle for Notre Dame forced a holding call that wiped out a 64-yard option-keeper touchdown by Jackson Gutierrez, a play that could have made the first half even more uncomfortable for the Irish. Navy's problem, as so often against Notre Dame, was depth: once the Irish adjusted at half-time, the Midshipmen could not sustain drives, and three second-half possessions produced almost nothing.

Why It Matters

Notre Dame Navy 2026 matters for three reasons. First, it keeps Notre Dame's College Football Playoff hopes alive. At 7-1, with a single loss to a top-ten BYU side, the Irish remain firmly in the conversation, but they cannot afford a slip. A loss to a 2-5 Navy team would have been close to fatal for those hopes; a 22-point win, however unconvincing for a half, keeps them intact.

Second, it exposes the work still to do before Miami. Carr's second straight uneven game, the lack of a running game in the first half, and a defence missing multiple starters, including cornerbacks Leonard Moore and DJ McKinney, defensive tackle Jason Onye and linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, who was ruled out before the game with a thumb injury, are all concerns against the No. 1 team in the country. The second half showed the fixes are available: run the ball, use the young receivers, and let the defence play on the front foot. Whether Notre Dame can do that for four quarters, not two, will decide next Saturday.

Third, the injury picture matters. Bowen was ruled out during the game, Moore spent time on the sideline, and Francis Brewu was seen limping early. Freeman's staff held Viliamu-Asa out with Miami in mind, a sensible precaution, but Notre Dame will need to be at, or close to, full strength against the Hurricanes. The Irish have now allowed zero points on the first series of the second half in their last 12 games, a remarkable defensive habit, and they will need every bit of that discipline against Miami's offence.

What Happens Next

Notre Dame return to South Bend for the biggest game of their season so far: No. 1 Miami visit on Saturday, November 7. It is a game with College Football Playoff implications for both sides, a rematch of last season's defeat for Freeman's team, and the measuring stick Saban pointed to on Saturday morning. Expect a week dominated by injury updates, by questions about Carr's form, and by whether the young receivers who stepped up against Navy can do the same against a Miami secondary.

Navy, now 2-6, continue a season that has been difficult from the start. The Midshipmen have now lost nine straight in this series, but they will take encouragement from a first half in which they outplayed a top-six team for long stretches. Their task is to turn that kind of performance into wins against opponents closer to their own level, and to keep the triple-option sharp enough to trouble better teams in future.

For the wider college football picture, Saturday also sets up a fascinating final month. Notre Dame at 7-1, Miami at No. 1, and a BYU side who have already beaten the Irish mean the Irish cannot afford to look past anyone, but equally, a win over Miami next Saturday would transform their season from promising to genuinely contending. That is the prize on offer, and Saturday's second half, if not its first, suggested Notre Dame know how to reach for it.
