Syracuse beat No. 16 SMU 30-27 on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the JMA Wireless Dome, holding off a ranked Mustangs side to claim one of the biggest wins of the Fran Brown era. The Orange led 20-10 at halftime, were pegged back to 20-17 in the third quarter, and then matched SMU score for score in a 10-10 fourth quarter to survive a Halloween afternoon in front of their home crowd.

Steve Angeli threw for 200 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score for Syracuse, which improved to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns, but the Mustangs, who had been looking ahead to next week's game against Virginia Tech according to the live coverage, fell to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the ACC, with their conference title hopes taking a serious blow.

What Happened

The first quarter was tight, with SMU edging it 10-7, but the second quarter belonged to Syracuse. The Orange scored 13 unanswered points before the break, turning a three-point deficit into a 20-10 halftime lead and giving the Dome crowd something to roar about on Halloween. SMU's running game, which had been a problem all afternoon, produced just 26 yards in the first half, and the Mustangs could not sustain drives against a Syracuse defence that stiffened whenever the field shortened.

SMU fought back after the interval, winning the third quarter 7-0 to cut the lead to 20-17 and set up a tense finish. The fourth quarter was a straight shootout in miniature, with both teams scoring 10 points, but Syracuse never surrendered the lead it had built in the second quarter. Every time SMU threatened to complete the comeback, the Orange found an answer, and when the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 30-27 to the home side, a result that had looked unlikely when the Mustangs arrived in Syracuse as heavy favourites.

The individual numbers underline how the game was won. Angeli completed 21 of 34 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown without an interception, and added a rushing touchdown on three carries for 14 yards. Ahmad Miller ran 18 times for 56 yards and a touchdown, giving Syracuse a ground presence to complement the passing game. For SMU, Jennings was superb through the air, completing 29 of 36 passes for 351 yards and two touchdowns, while Kendrick Raphael ran 14 times for 51 yards and a touchdown and Knight and Jalen Hale each caught a touchdown pass. The difference was not SMU's passing, which was excellent, but Syracuse's ability to score in bursts and then protect a lead.

Background and Context

Syracuse arrived at this game needing a statement win. The Orange had shown flashes of momentum, including a walk-off two-point conversion win in overtime at Chapel Hill that ended a 399-day conference drought, and head coach Fran Brown had spent the week talking about turning relief into readiness. Freshman Calvin Russell III had delivered the game-tying touchdown and the winning two-point conversion in that Chapel Hill game, and Brown had made a direct appeal to the area's youth football community to fill the Dome for the noon kickoff against SMU, complete with new helmets featuring Otto the Orange for the first time.

SMU, by contrast, arrived as the ranked team with the bigger prize in sight. The Mustangs were 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the ACC, ranked 16th in the coaches poll and 19th in some other rankings, and their offence, led by Jennings, was one of the fastest and most dangerous in the conference. Brown had warned all week about the speed and force of the Mustangs' attack, singling out Jennings as a legitimate star, and he had refused to reveal how Syracuse planned to handle SMU's tempo. The answer, it turned out, was to score early in the second quarter, control the middle of the game, and then refuse to blink in the fourth.

The result also reverses recent history between the two programmes. SMU had won the previous meeting, and Syracuse had lived through a stretch of one-possession heartbreaks and fourth-quarter grinds before the Chapel Hill breakthrough. Beating a ranked team at home, in a game where the Orange led for most of the second half, is a different kind of win from a walk-off in overtime: it suggests a team learning how to close, rather than merely how to survive.

Syracuse SMU: A Second-Quarter Surge and a Fourth-Quarter Stand

The shape of the game was set in the second quarter. Trailing 10-7 after the first period, Syracuse scored 13 points without reply, a run that changed the entire complexion of the afternoon. SMU, which had looked comfortable early, suddenly found itself chasing the game, and although the Mustangs won the third quarter and matched Syracuse in the fourth, they never recovered the lead. In a sport where momentum is often described as the only thing that matters, the Orange's second-quarter burst was the game's defining passage.

The fourth quarter deserves its own mention, because it tested Syracuse's nerve. Both teams scored 10 points in the final period, and SMU's offence, which had been held to 26 rushing yards in the first half, found enough rhythm through Jennings to keep the pressure on until the end. Syracuse's response was to keep scoring rather than retreat into a shell, and that willingness to trade blows, rather than sit on a lead, is what ultimately separated the teams. A three-point win over a ranked opponent is rarely comfortable, but it is the kind of win that builds a programme's belief.

Reactions and Quotes

The live coverage framed the result as a warning for SMU, noting that the Mustangs may have been looking ahead to next week's game against Virginia Tech. That is the classic trap-game story, and it fits the pattern of the afternoon: a ranked team, on the road, in a loud dome, against an opponent with nothing to lose and a home crowd in Halloween mood. Syracuse, meanwhile, had talked all week about building something real, and Brown's message about shifting from relief to readiness was answered by a team that led for most of the game rather than stealing it at the death.

For the Orange, the win also validates the Dome as a genuine home advantage again. The noon kickoff, the new Otto helmets, the youth football appeal and the Halloween atmosphere all combined into a day that felt like an event, and the team repaid it with a performance to match. SMU leaves Syracuse with its conference hopes dented but not destroyed, while Syracuse leaves with a ranked win that will matter when bowl eligibility and conference positioning are decided in November.

Why It Matters

Syracuse beats SMU matters because it changes both teams' seasons. For Syracuse, a 4-4 record with a ranked win is a platform: the Orange are one win closer to bowl eligibility, they have beaten a team that was supposed to beat them, and they have done it by leading for most of the game, not by luck. For SMU, a second conference defeat puts the Mustangs behind in the ACC race and raises questions about focus and physicality, particularly a running game that could not get going in the first half.

It also matters for the wider ACC picture. Every ranked team that loses in late October reshuffles the conference championship race, and SMU's defeat opens the door for the teams chasing the Mustangs. Syracuse, which had been written off after a difficult stretch, is now a team nobody will want to face in November, and that reputation, earned on a Halloween afternoon in the Dome, may be the most valuable thing the Orange take from the win.

What Happens Next

Syracuse will look to build on the win and push toward bowl eligibility, with the confidence of a ranked victory behind them and a home crowd that now believes again. The challenge for Brown's team is consistency: the Orange have shown they can beat a ranked team at home, but they must now show they can do it again, on the road and in games where they are expected to win, not just as underdogs.

SMU, meanwhile, must regroup quickly for next week's game against Virginia Tech, the fixture the live coverage suggested may have distracted them. The Mustangs' passing game remains elite, and Jennings's 351-yard day proved that again, but their running game and their slow second quarter in Syracuse are problems that need fixing before November's run-in. A team with SMU's talent can still reach the conference title game, but it can no longer afford to drop games it is expected to win.
