No. 12 Ole Miss turned a tight game into a rout on Saturday, October 31, 2026, beating Auburn 45-15 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi, with 28 unanswered points after the Tigers had closed to within two points midway through the third quarter. The Ole Miss Auburn 45-15 result kept the Rebels unbeaten at home in 2026, improved them to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in Southeastern Conference play, and kept their College Football Playoff hopes firmly alive with a huge home game against Georgia to come.

Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss was the difference. He completed 22 of 34 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns, threw one interception, and added 65 rushing yards and another score, including a 26-yard touchdown run that broke the game open. Auburn, which fell to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the SEC, hung around for more than two quarters before Ole Miss scored the final 28 points of the game.

What Happened

The first quarter was scoreless, and Ole Miss led only 14-9 at half-time, with Auburn staying in the game despite losing the yardage battle. The Tigers then produced their best drive of the afternoon early in the second half, when quarterback Byrum Brown ran for a touchdown to make it 17-15. Head coach Alex Golesh chose to go for two points, aiming to tie the game, but Auburn could not convert, and that missed chance proved to be the turning point of the afternoon.

Chambliss answered immediately. He rushed up the middle for 26 yards, outraced the Auburn defence to the end zone, and put Ole Miss ahead 24-15 with 3:25 remaining in the third quarter. From there, the Rebels never looked back. They scored three touchdowns in the next eight minutes of game time, stretching the lead beyond reach, and then added a final score late in the fourth quarter to complete the 45-15 margin. The quarter-by-quarter line told the story of the surge: Auburn 0, 9, 6, 0; Ole Miss 0, 14, 10, 21.

Brown finished 25 of 38 for 195 yards and a touchdown for Auburn, but he was sacked four times and spent much of the second half under pressure. With star running back Kewan Lacy out with a shoulder injury, Ole Miss turned to sophomore Shekai Mills-Knight, who responded with a career-high 71 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Makhi Frazier also shared carries in the backfield.

The final touchdown carried its own storyline. With the game already decided, backup quarterback Deuce Knight came in for a series against his former team, took a rush around the left side on his first play, and ran 17 yards to the end zone to make it 45-15 with 3:27 remaining. Knight had transferred from Auburn to Ole Miss, and his score against the Tigers was the exclamation point on a second half in which Ole Miss outscored Auburn 31-6.

Background and Context

Ole Miss arrived at the game smarting from a loss at Texas the previous week, and in need of a convincing win to stay in the Playoff conversation. Auburn arrived with a brutal October behind it: the Tigers finished the month 1-3, all against top-15 teams, three of them on the road, and were looking for a statement win of their own in Oxford. For a half, and a little more, they looked capable of producing one.

The Rebels' home record gave them a further edge. Saturday's win was their 16th straight at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, a run dating back to a 26-14 win over Oklahoma on October 26, 2024. Auburn, by contrast, has now lost three straight in the series to Ole Miss, and the Tigers' season has become a search for bowl eligibility rather than a run at the SEC title.

Chambliss has become the engine of the Ole Miss offence. His ability to extend plays with his legs, as well as throw from the pocket, forced Auburn to defend the whole field, and the Rebels' 13-for-16 success rate on third down showed how often that dual threat kept drives alive. Auburn, meanwhile, managed only 63 rushing yards all game, a figure that left Brown throwing into obvious passing situations for most of the second half.

Ole Miss Auburn 45-15: The Second-Half Surge

The surge was not a single big play but a sustained collapse of Auburn's resistance. After the missed two-point conversion, Ole Miss scored on four straight meaningful possessions, mixing Chambliss runs, short passes on third down and the running of Mills-Knight to wear down a defence that had held up well for two quarters. Auburn's offence, which had moved the ball in the first half, went scoreless in the fourth quarter and managed only a field goal's worth of points after half-time in the third.

Coaches often talk about the middle eight minutes of a game, the end of the second quarter and the start of the third, as the decisive stretch. Here, the decisive stretch came later, in the middle of the third quarter, when a two-point game became a nine-point game, then a 16-point game, then a rout. Auburn's decision to chase the tie, rather than kick the extra point and trail by one, will be debated, but the Tigers' failure to stop Chambliss on the next drive mattered more than the arithmetic of the conversion attempt.

By the time Knight scored, the stadium was celebrating a win that had looked far from certain at half-time. Ole Miss had scored 31 second-half points, Auburn had been held to six, and the Rebels had turned a potential upset into a statement victory.

Reactions and Quotes

Reporting from Oxford after the game stressed how quickly the mood changed. Auburn had answers for Chambliss early, one report noted, but the game-changing Ole Miss quarterback wrote a quite different ending, handing the Tigers a 45-15 loss. Another account described Chambliss as putting on a superhero cape for Halloween, a fitting image for a quarterback who produced a touchdown with his arm, a touchdown with his legs, and the run that broke Auburn's resistance.

Auburn's side of the story was one of frustration at a collapse rather than a blowout from the start. The Tigers kept it close for much of the contest, one grading report noted, before fizzling down the stretch, with the defence earning a low mark after Ole Miss finished 13-for-16 on third down. The Tigers' brutal October schedule, all against top-15 opposition, was cited as context for a team that now returns home next weekend against Arkansas needing a win to steady its season.

Ole Miss, by contrast, can now look forward rather than back. The Rebels stay in Oxford next week to host No. 3 Georgia on Saturday, November 7, in a prime-time game that will go a long way to deciding whether their Playoff hopes are real. A win there would be the biggest of the season; a loss would leave them needing help elsewhere.

Why It Matters

The result matters for the SEC race and for the Playoff picture. Ole Miss, at 6-2 and 4-2 in the conference, remains in the hunt, and a home win over Georgia next week would give them a signature victory to match their record. Auburn, at 4-4 and 2-4, is now playing for bowl eligibility and for pride in a season that began with higher hopes.

It also matters for Chambliss. His stat line, 263 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 65 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown, with only one interception, is the kind of all-round performance that builds a reputation in November, when awards voters and Playoff committee members are watching most closely. The fact that he produced it after a slow start, and after Auburn had closed to two points, will count in his favour.

For Auburn, the game is a reminder of how thin the margin is in the SEC. The Tigers were two points away from a tie midway through the third quarter, and lost by 30. That swing, from contention to rout in less than a quarter, is the difference between a team that can finish drives and stop third downs and a team that cannot, and it is the gap Ole Miss exploited ruthlessly.

What Happens Next

Ole Miss stays in Oxford to host No. 3 Georgia on Saturday, November 7, in what is now the biggest home game of the Rebels' season. Georgia, which was playing Florida in Atlanta on Saturday, will arrive as a top-three team, and the game is set for a prime-time kickoff. Ole Miss will be defending a 16-game home winning streak, and a win would put them firmly in the Playoff race.

Auburn returns home next weekend against Arkansas, a game the Tigers need to win to get back above .500 in conference play and keep their bowl hopes on track. The Tigers will also need to address the third-down defence and the running game, both of which were exposed in Oxford, before they face another physical SEC opponent.
