A detailed new timeline of Jacob Morley escape has revealed hours of delay before prison staff alerted outside law enforcement, raising fresh questions about how a convicted murderer was able to cross state lines before anyone outside the Tennessee prison system knew he was gone. The timeline, described by District Attorney Danny Goodman Jr. and reported by WBBJ and WVLT on October 30, 2026, shows that Morley had already reached Marion, Illinois, before prison officials called anyone outside the Tennessee Department of Correction.

Morley, 28, escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, in Lake County in the north-western corner of Tennessee, late on Sunday, October 25, 2026. He was serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for the 2022 first-degree murder of his co-worker Cody Birchfield in Carter County, along with aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, evading arrest and vandalism. He remains at large, is on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's Most Wanted list, and is considered dangerous. A combined reward of $17,500 is offered for information leading to his arrest.

Key Points

• Jacob Morley escaped the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville late on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
• A new timeline shows a covered cell window and a false headcount claim hid his absence for hours.
• Prison staff alerted an internal investigator at about 2:20 a.m., but outside agencies were not told until 5:30-6:15 a.m.
• District Attorney Danny Goodman Jr. said Morley was already in Marion, Illinois, before outside agencies were called.
• Investigators are also probing a possible link to a Tuesday armed robbery at the Bank of Deerfield in Wisconsin; no connection has been established.

What Happened

According to the timeline released by sources involved in the investigation, the first sign of trouble came at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, during a routine cell count. The procedure requires one officer to count inmates and a second to follow and verify. When the first officer reached Morley's cell, the door window was covered. Rather than having the cover removed, the officer knocked and asked how many inmates were inside. An inmate falsely claimed two were present. Morley was not in the cell.

At 10:00 p.m., the second officer conducting the verification check discovered Morley was missing. At 11:47 p.m., prison officials called an emergency count and confirmed he was absent. Investigators believe Morley had already left the grounds by that point. At 12:25 a.m. on Monday, October 26, staff conducted a second emergency count, suspecting he was hiding on facility grounds.

At around 1:00 a.m., Morley reportedly stole a white 2008 Ford F-350 utility truck marked with “Lindamood Planting Company” and headed toward Illinois. He was filmed passing Hornbeak Fire Department at 1:18 a.m., according to earlier reporting. At 2:20 a.m., prison staff notified an internal Tennessee Department of Correction investigator. Between 3:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., staff discovered breached perimeter security fences where Morley had cut his way out after hiding among pallets and a trash cart behind the main kitchen.

Outside state and local law enforcement agencies were formally notified only between 5:30 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the District Attorney's Office were notified at 5:30 a.m.; the Lake County Sheriff's Department was not contacted until 6:15 a.m. By then, Goodman said, Morley had already crossed into Illinois. “He was already in Marion, Illinois, before they ever called anyone outside of TDOC,” Goodman said.

Background and Context

Morley's escape was the second from Tennessee Department of Correction custody in a week, following Gregory Redden, 63, who walked out of Nashville General Hospital on October 21. It also came in the month Commissioner Frank Strada resigned after the failed execution of Christa Pike. That context has intensified scrutiny of the department's procedures, particularly the cell-count failure at the heart of the new timeline: a covered window, a knock, and a false answer were enough, on the account given, to delay the discovery of an empty cell.

The stolen truck was found abandoned just after 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, in Marion, Illinois, about 120 miles north of the prison. Marion police reported no indication Morley remained in the immediate area. Marion Police Chief David Fitts said earlier: “He has vanished.” The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation later asked the public, truck drivers and travellers in particular, to review dash-camera footage from the Pilot Travel Center at 2611 Vernell Road in Marion between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Monday, October 26, saying even something that seemed insignificant could prove critical.

Morley's original crime was the killing of Cody Birchfield, 34, his co-worker at Oliver Wood Working, a wood packaging company. Birchfield was initially reported missing in February 2022. In February 2025, Morley was found guilty of murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and aggravated burglary, and he was sentenced in June 2025. Birchfield's sister, Carrie Norman, has spoken publicly as the manhunt continued, and the family dimension of the case has remained prominent in local coverage.

Jacob Morley Escape Timeline: The Wisconsin Lead

Authorities are also probing a possible link between Morley and a Tuesday afternoon armed robbery at the Bank of Deerfield in Dane County, Wisconsin. In that incident, an armed assailant bound employees and escaped in a stolen vehicle that was later found abandoned. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed it is tracking the Wisconsin incident, though no formal connection has been established. The Dane County Sheriff's Office has asked the public for help, including trail-camera footage along State Farm Road between Highway 12/18 and Prairie Drive, Clearview Road between Highway 12/18 and CTH PQ, and Highway 73 and Fadness Road, and dash-camera footage from drivers on those roads. Anyone with suspicious footage is asked to call Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.

Investigators have been careful to separate what is confirmed from what is merely being checked. The Wisconsin robbery is a lead, not a finding, and the timeline of Morley's movements after Marion remains the central gap in the case. That gap is precisely why the delay in notification matters: the hours between the 10:00 p.m. discovery that Morley was missing and the 5:30 a.m. notification to outside agencies were hours in which he could travel, abandon a vehicle, and disappear into a much larger area. By the time the truck was found in Marion, the trail was already cold.

Reactions and Quotes

Goodman's central statement was blunt: “He was already in Marion, Illinois, before they ever called anyone outside of TDOC.” That sentence, reported by WBBJ, has become the focus of the new coverage because it quantifies the cost of the delay in a single, verifiable fact. It does not, on its own, prove what would have happened had outside agencies been called earlier, but it establishes that the window for an immediate local response had already closed by the time that response was requested.

The Tennessee Department of Correction said in a social media post on Friday, October 30, that Morley is “considered dangerous and could be anywhere,” and asked the public to remain vigilant, check on family members and neighbours, and be alert for suspicious activity on properties, including vacant homes, vacation properties and outbuildings. The department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have repeatedly asked anyone with information to call 1-800-TBI-FIND or 911, and not to approach Morley.

Why It Matters

The timeline matters for three reasons. First, it is a public-safety issue: a convicted murderer serving a life sentence remains at large, and every detail about his movements helps the public and law enforcement narrow the search. Second, it is an accountability issue: the sequence of a covered window, a false count, an internal notification at 2:20 a.m., a discovered fence breach at 3:30-4:00 a.m., and an outside notification at 5:30-6:15 a.m. raises direct questions about prison procedures and about when, and to whom, an escape must be reported. Third, it is a pattern issue: as the second escape in a week, it feeds a broader debate in Tennessee about corrections oversight, staffing and leadership after a difficult month for the department.

For residents in Lake County, Tennessee, and in Marion, Illinois, and for travellers along the routes between them, the practical message has not changed: do not approach Morley, check doorbell and trail cameras, and report anything suspicious immediately. For the investigation, the new timeline gives a firmer backbone than the first, confused days of the manhunt, and it gives investigators a set of times and places — the kitchen pallets, the fence breach, the Pilot Travel Center in Marion — against which new tips and footage can be checked.

What Happens Next

The manhunt continues across state lines, with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the U.S. Marshals Service and local agencies involved, and a $17,500 reward in place — $2,500 from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, $10,000 from Governor Bill Lee, and $5,000 from the U.S. Marshals Service. Investigators will continue to test the Wisconsin lead, review dash-camera and trail-camera footage, and follow up on tips from the Marion area. Any arrest would bring additional escape-related charges on top of Morley's life sentence.

The department is also likely to face further questions about its notification procedures, and whether the hours-long gap between an internal alert and an outside alert will lead to a change in policy. Those questions will not be answered by the manhunt alone, but the timeline now on the record makes them unavoidable. Until Morley is found, the case remains, in the department's own words, a search for a man who “could be anywhere.”
