President Donald Trump used a short social media post on Saturday to turn the final weekend of the 2026 midterm campaign into a direct argument with his predecessor, sharing a “Life Before Obama” checklist on Truth Social as Barack Obama campaigned for Democrats ahead of Tuesday’s elections.

The post, published on Saturday, October 31, 2026, carried no caption, according to a roundup of the day’s news. It listed eight short claims about life before Barack Obama’s presidency, and it spread quickly online on the Saturday before Election Day on November 3, when voters will decide control of all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats.

The timing was the point. With three days left before the midterms, Trump was not introducing a new policy or announcing a new event. He was offering his supporters a shorthand version of the closing argument he has made at rallies and in tele-rallies across the country: that the country changed for the worse during the Obama years, and that the midterm vote is a chance to reject what followed.

Key Points

• Donald Trump shared a “Life Before Obama” checklist on Truth Social on Saturday, October 31, 2026, three days before the November 3 midterms.
• The post listed eight items, including “there was no ISIS,” “there was no Black Lives Matter,” “there was no ANTIFA” and “there was no expensive Obamacare.”
• The post carried no caption, according to a roundup published on Saturday evening, and it was quickly amplified by supporters and criticised by opponents online.
• Barack Obama has been campaigning for Democrats in the closing days, including rallies in Ohio, Michigan and Georgia, while Trump has held rallies and tele-rallies for Republicans.
• More than 49 million Americans had already voted early by Friday, October 30, a record for a midterm, so the closing messages are aimed at the voters who still have to decide.

What Happened

On Saturday, Trump shared the “Life Before Obama” post on Truth Social, his social media platform. The post was picked up within hours by news aggregators and by commentators on both sides of the political divide, and it became one of the most shared political posts of the Halloween weekend.

The eight items in the checklist were: “there was no ISIS”; “there was no Black Lives Matter”; “there was no ANTIFA”; “there was no war on police”; “there was no law legalising propaganda on American citizens”; “there was no Russia hoax”; “there was no expensive Obamacare”; and “there was no TDS,” a reference to “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” a phrase Trump’s supporters use to describe intense opposition to him.

The post did not explain the items, offer evidence for them, or name a source. It was presented as a list, and its brevity was part of its appeal: each line could be copied, quoted and debated on its own, and each line touched on a controversy that has defined American politics for the past decade.

One aggregator, Inshorts, reported the post on Saturday afternoon, listing the same items and noting the “expensive Obamacare” and “no TDS” lines in its headline. A conservative roundup published on Saturday evening described the post as Trump’s answer to Obama’s campaign swing for Democrats, and said most of the boxes in the checklist “have receipts.” A progressive newsletter published the same day framed the post very differently, presenting it as evidence that Trump “can’t get Obama off his mind” and linking it to other social media attacks Trump posted that day.

That split in reaction was itself the story. Supporters treated the list as a summary of grievances they already hold. Critics treated it as a meme that compressed complicated histories into slogans. Neither side needed the post to be long to understand what it was trying to do.

Background: Obama on the Campaign Trail

The post landed while Obama was serving as one of the Democrats’ most prominent campaigners in the final days of the race. Obama, who served as president from 2009 until Trump took office in 2017, returned to active campaigning in the closing weeks of the midterm season after a relatively low public profile earlier in the cycle.

On Saturday, October 24, Obama held his first rally of the midterm season in Cleveland, Ohio, for Amy Acton, the Democratic nominee for governor, and for former Senator Sherrod Brown, who is seeking to win back a Senate seat from Republican Senator Jon Husted. Reports of that rally described a venue holding more than 10,000 people that was nearly full, and said both Ohio races were rated as toss-ups.

Hours later the same day, Obama campaigned in Detroit, Michigan, for Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate candidate, and for Jocelyn Benson, the Democratic nominee for governor. El-Sayed is facing Republican Mike Rogers in a closely contested Senate race that has drawn national attention and heavy spending.

Later in the week, Obama campaigned in Georgia for Senator Jon Ossoff, who is seeking re-election, and for Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former Atlanta mayor running for governor. At a rally in suburban Atlanta, Obama called Trump and the Republican Party “not serious people,” criticised Trump’s tariffs and his decision to go to war with Iran, and framed the election as a judgement on affordability, telling supporters that prices had risen under Trump.

Obama’s message has been consistent across those stops: that the November 3 vote is a chance to limit Trump’s power, to demand accountability from his administration, and to protect congressional checks on the presidency. In Michigan, he urged voters to “flip that circuit breaker” and “bring some accountability to this government,” language Democrats have used to present the midterms as an emergency brake on the president’s agenda.

Trump, for his part, has urged voters to treat the midterms as a referendum on his presidency even though his name is not on the ballot. He has staged more than 20 rallies this month, according to the Associated Press, and in the final days he has combined in-person rallies with a large programme of tele-rallies, reaching voters in states where Republicans are defending narrow majorities in both chambers.

The 'Life Before Obama' Checklist in Context

Each item on Trump’s checklist refers to a political flashpoint that has shaped the last decade of American debate, and each one is contested in a different way.

“There was no ISIS” refers to the Islamic State group, whose rise in Iraq and Syria during Obama’s second term became a central foreign policy issue in the 2016 presidential campaign and beyond. “There was no Black Lives Matter” refers to the movement that grew after the killing of Trayvon Martin and the protests in Ferguson, Missouri, and that became a national force during Obama’s presidency. “There was no ANTIFA” refers to the loosely organised anti-fascist movement that became prominent in street protests in the late 2010s.

“There was no war on police” echoes a claim Trump and his supporters have made for years: that criticism of policing, protests against police violence, and calls for reform amount to hostility towards law enforcement. “There was no law legalising propaganda on American citizens” refers to changes in United States information law that critics of Obama have long cited, and that supporters of the former president describe very differently.

“There was no Russia hoax” is Trump’s long-standing description of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and into contacts between Russia and members of his campaign. Trump has consistently called that investigation a hoax, while investigators and intelligence agencies have documented Russian interference efforts, even as they debated the extent of any coordination.

“There was no expensive Obamacare” refers to the Affordable Care Act, the health care law Obama signed in 2010 and that remains one of the most debated pieces of domestic legislation in modern American politics. Democrats present the law as a landmark expansion of health coverage; Republicans, including Trump, have campaigned for years on repealing or replacing it, arguing that it raised costs for many families.

“There was no TDS” is the most openly partisan line on the list. “Trump Derangement Syndrome” is a phrase invented by Trump’s supporters to describe what they see as irrational opposition to him. By including it, Trump was not making a historical claim at all. He was making a joke at his critics’ expense, and inviting his supporters to share it.

Taken together, the list is less a history lesson than a campaign slogan in eight lines. It does not argue a case step by step. It assumes the reader already agrees with the conclusion, and it offers a set of shared references that supporters can recognise instantly.

Reactions: Supporters Amplify, Critics Push Back

Online reaction on Saturday followed a familiar pattern. Supporters amplified the post, shared screenshots of it, and added their own commentary about Obama’s legacy. One widely shared amplification on the social platform GETTR described the post as Trump going “scorched earth” on Obama and repeated the checklist in full.

A conservative roundup, The Rothman Report, presented the post as a direct response to Obama’s campaign swing and argued that “most boxes have receipts,” suggesting that the items on the list could be defended with evidence. The roundup placed the post alongside other Saturday stories, including a Gainesville waitress whose tax refund was said to have risen under the no-tax-on-tips deduction, and remarks by Representative Randy Fine at Trump’s Daytona Beach rally.

Critics, meanwhile, treated the post as another example of Trump’s fixation on his predecessor. The progressive newsletter MeidasPlus, in its Saturday updates, said Trump “keeps posting about Obama” and linked the “Life Before Obama” post to other social media attacks Trump posted the same day, including a post aimed at a Reuters reporter. The newsletter’s framing was the mirror image of the conservative roundup: where one side saw a checklist with receipts, the other saw obsession.

No statement from Obama or from his office about the specific post had been reported by Saturday evening. That silence was not unusual. Obama’s campaign speeches have attacked Trump’s record in general terms, on affordability, on the Iran war, and on what Obama calls corruption, without responding to individual social media posts line by line.

The absence of a direct response also left the post to be debated by supporters and critics online, which is often how Trump’s social media posts function in a campaign: they set a topic, they provoke a reaction, and they keep the conversation focused on the contrast Trump wants voters to see.

Why It Matters

The “Life Before Obama” post matters not because it contains new information, but because it reveals how both parties are framing the final days of the midterm campaign.

For Republicans, the closing message is that the election is about the past as much as the present: about the Obama years, about the movements and policies that emerged during them, and about whether voters want to return to what Trump presents as the pre-Obama order. Trump has repeatedly told supporters to “pretend” he is on the ballot, and the checklist is another way of personalising an election in which his name does not appear.

For Democrats, the closing message is almost the opposite: that the election is about the present, about prices, about the war with Iran, and about checking a president they accuse of overreach. Obama’s rallies have hammered that message, urging voters to use the midterms as a circuit breaker and to hold the administration to account.

The two messages are not really debating each other. They are speaking to different audiences, and they are designed to turn out different voters. Trump’s post is aimed at voters who already believe the country changed for the worse under Obama. Obama’s speeches are aimed at voters who already believe the country needs a check on Trump.

That is why the early vote matters so much to both sides. By Friday evening, October 30, more than 49 million Americans had already voted early, according to the University of Florida’s Election Lab, passing the full early vote total of 45.9 million in the 2022 midterms. With so many votes already cast, the final weekend is less about persuading undecided voters from scratch and more about making sure each side’s supporters actually turn out.

In that context, a short, shareable post can be as valuable as a long speech. It gives supporters something to forward, something to quote, and something to argue about, and it keeps the campaign’s central contrast — Trump versus Obama, past versus present — at the top of the online conversation for another day.

What Happens Next

The campaign now moves into its final 48 hours. Trump is scheduled to hold in-person rallies in Kansas and Iowa on Sunday, November 1, after reinstating them following a brief cancellation earlier in the week. Those rallies, for Senate and House candidates in states where Republicans are defending competitive seats, will be Trump’s last in-person stops before Election Day.

Obama is expected to continue campaigning for Democrats through the weekend, although no new rally specifically responding to Trump’s Saturday post had been announced by Saturday evening. Democrats are also relying on a large early-vote advantage in party-tracked states, where registered Democrats have outpaced Republicans among early voters, according to Election Lab figures reported earlier in the week.

On Tuesday, November 3, voters will decide all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats, along with governorships and state offices across the country. Democrats need a net gain of just a few seats to take the House majority, while the Senate map is more difficult: Democrats need a net gain of four seats to overcome the Republicans’ 53-47 majority, and forecasters have given them a growing but far from certain chance of doing so.

Whether the “Life Before Obama” post changes any votes is impossible to measure, and probably beside the point. Its purpose was to frame the choice, to energise supporters, and to keep Obama — rather than any single Republican candidate — as the foil for Trump’s closing argument. On that measure, by Saturday evening, it had already succeeded: it was being shared, debated and condemned, and it was doing so on Trump’s terms.

The next test will come on Tuesday night, when the votes are counted and it becomes clear whether the closing messages of either side — Trump’s backward-looking checklist or Obama’s forward-looking call for accountability — persuaded enough voters to change control of Congress.
