Kyle Konrardy kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired to give Iowa State a 51-49 upset win over No. 24 Oklahoma State on Saturday night, October 31, 2026, at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, capping a wild Halloween shootout in which the teams combined for 1,084 total yards and the lead changed hands in the final minute. The Cyclones, who had trailed 49-48 with 53 seconds left, drove 47 yards in five plays to set up the walk-off kick, giving first-year head coach Jimmy Rogers his first signature victory and dealing a severe blow to Oklahoma State's hopes of reaching the Big 12 title game.

Iowa State improved to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Big 12, while Oklahoma State fell to 5-3 and 3-2, despite 533 yards of its own offence, five touchdown passes from Drew Mestemaker and a three-touchdown night from Caleb Hawkins. The Cowboys had taken their first lead of the second half on Wyatt Young's touchdown with 53 seconds left, only for a post-play personal foul on Young to give Iowa State better field position for its final drive, a mistake that proved decisive on a night defined by costly errors.

What Happened

The shootout started early and never slowed. Konrardy's 39-yard field goal with seven seconds left in the first half gave Iowa State a 24-21 lead at the break, after a half in which the Cyclones had already piled up 253 yards. Iowa State outscored Oklahoma State 14-7 in the third quarter, outgaining the Cowboys 176-112, and seemed in control when Flora's 75-yard touchdown run, right after Oklahoma State had cut the lead to three points early in the fourth quarter, restored a cushion that felt like a backbreaker.

Oklahoma State refused to fold. Trailing 45-35 with just over 10:30 left, the Cowboys went for it on fourth-and-three, Mestemaker kept the ball himself to pick up the first down, and Hawkins scored a second later to make it 45-42. Konrardy's 29-yard field goal with 2:56 to go pushed Iowa State ahead 48-42, only for Oklahoma State to mount one more drive, capped by Mestemaker's seventh-yard touchdown pass to Young with 53 seconds left, for a 49-48 lead, the Cowboys' first lead since the opening quarter.

Young's celebration, however, drew an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty for what appeared to be taunting the Iowa State crowd, and the resulting field position gave the Cyclones a shorter field for their final answer. Raynor found his leading receiver, Jamal Polite, on a 33-yard pass, Polite finished with six catches for 171 yards and a touchdown, and the five-play, 47-yard drive set up Konrardy from 34 yards. As time expired, the kick split the uprights, and Jack Trice Stadium, already a haunted house for ranked Oklahoma State teams for about 15 years, became a house of horrors for the Cowboys once again.

The final numbers told the story of two offences that could hardly be stopped and two defences that could hardly stop anything. Iowa State finished with 581 yards, 309 through the air and 272 on the ground, while Oklahoma State totalled 533 yards, 323 passing and 210 rushing. Raynor completed 18 of 28 passes for 309 yards and three touchdowns with an interception, and rushed for 48 yards and another score, in his first game back after being benched the previous week.

Background and Context

For Rogers, the win was a landmark. The first-year Iowa State head coach had been searching for a marquee victory in his debut season, and he found it on Halloween night against a ranked opponent, in front of a home crowd, with a walk-off kick. Iowa State's final four possessions, a punt, a touchdown, a punt and a field goal, showed a team that kept answering, even when Oklahoma State's offence seemed unstoppable.

For Oklahoma State, the loss was a heartbreaker built on three huge mistakes. Punt returner Bobby Deal Jr. muffed a punt that Iowa State recovered, leading to a Cyclones field goal. The Cowboys' defence, which gave up nearly 600 yards, could not get a stop when it needed one most, and Young's penalty after the go-ahead touchdown handed Iowa State the field position it needed to win. Head coach Eric Morris and his team now face a road trip to Kansas State next Saturday with their Big 12 title hopes, in the words of one report, all but cancelled for a trip to Arlington.

Hawkins, meanwhile, produced a signature game in defeat. He rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns, caught six passes for 81 yards and another score, and totalled 275 yards of offence with three touchdowns, including a 59-yard catch-and-run and a 75-yard touchdown run after halftime that briefly pulled Oklahoma State within three points. Mestemaker, 27 of 42 for 323 yards and five touchdowns with one interception, found Justin Bowick for seven catches, 124 yards and two scores, but even eight combined touchdowns from Mestemaker and Hawkins were not enough.

Iowa State Oklahoma State 51-49: How the Walk-Off Happened

The walk-off happened because Iowa State kept its composure in the final minute, and Oklahoma State lost its own. Down one point with 53 seconds left, the Cyclones did not need a miracle, just a clean drive, and Raynor delivered it, finding Polite for 33 yards to move into field-goal range. Konrardy, who had already made kicks of 39 and 29 yards in the game, did the rest, and the clock hit zero with the ball through the uprights.

The penalty on Young was the turning point that will be replayed all week. Without it, Iowa State would have started deeper in its own territory, with less margin for a drive that needed only 47 yards as it was. With it, the Cyclones had a manageable field, a quarterback playing with confidence after reclaiming his job, and a kicker who had already been perfect on the night. The combination was fatal for Oklahoma State.

Iowa State's time-of-possession edge, nearly 35 minutes to Oklahoma State's 25, also mattered. The Cyclones ran the ball effectively all night, with Flora's 221 yards on 29 carries setting the tone, and the offence stayed on the field long enough to keep Oklahoma State's explosive attack on the sideline, even as the Cowboys scored on almost every chance they got.

Reactions and Quotes

The celebration in Ames was immediate and unrestrained, a Halloween night walk-off win over a ranked rival, with the crowd storming the field in spirit if not in fact, and a first-year coach earning his defining moment. For Iowa State, a 4-4 record now looks very different: the Cyclones are back at .500, with a ranked win, a signature moment, and a November schedule that includes Baylor next Saturday and Cincinnati on November 14.

For Oklahoma State, the reaction was disbelief. The Cowboys had scored 49 points, gained 533 yards, and taken the lead with 53 seconds left, yet lost, a combination that is almost impossible to explain without pointing to the mistakes: the muffed punt, the defensive breakdowns, and the penalty that gave Iowa State its final chance. The loss likely derails any hope of making the Big 12 title game, a cruel outcome for an offence that produced one of its best nights of the season.

Nationally, the game was the latest in a Halloween weekend defined by upsets and chaos, with ranked teams falling across the country and the playoff picture shifting by the hour. Iowa State's win, like USC's over Ohio State and Miami's survival at North Carolina, will be part of the argument when the first College Football Playoff rankings are revealed on Tuesday.

Why It Matters

This result matters for the Big 12 race, where Oklahoma State's loss reshuffles the title picture and Iowa State's win keeps the Cyclones relevant in November. A team that was 3-4 and searching for an identity now has a ranked win and a walk-off moment, while a team that was 5-2 and dreaming of Arlington now faces a road trip to Kansas State with its season on the brink.

It also matters as a lesson in how games are won and lost. Iowa State did not win because it was perfect; it won because it answered every Oklahoma State punch, because its kicker was reliable, and because it kept its discipline in the final minute, when its opponent did not. In a sport decided by inches and seconds, that discipline, and that penalty, were the difference between 51-49 and 49-48.

What Happens Next

Iowa State travels to Baylor next Saturday, November 7, with momentum and a .500 record, while Oklahoma State travels to Kansas State the same weekend, needing a win to keep its season from unravelling. The Cyclones will host Cincinnati on November 14, and the Cowboys will look to regroup after a loss that will sting for a long time in Stillwater.

The playoff rankings on Tuesday will not feature either team at the top, but the result will still matter: it is another data point in a season of upsets, another ranked team beaten, and another reminder that in college football, no lead in the final minute is safe.
