President Donald Trump said on Saturday night that the United States could strike what remains of Iran's nuclear programme in just ten minutes, naming a suspected underground site known as Pickaxe Mountain as one of the one or two targets still to be dealt with. Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, during a Halloween party, Trump insisted at the same time that Washington was in no hurry to resume military action, even as the United States prepares for the possibility of renewed strikes after Tuesday's midterm elections.

The remarks, reported by AFP, the Jerusalem Post and other outlets on Saturday night and into Sunday, were the most specific public threat Trump has made in weeks about the next phase of the war the United States and Israel began against Iran in late February. They came hours after Trump spoke by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and a day after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in Atlanta that Trump had not yet decided whether to resume strikes and preferred a diplomatic solution.

Key Points

• Donald Trump said on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Mar-a-Lago in Florida that the US could deal with Iran's remaining nuclear sites "in 10 minutes".
• Trump named Pickaxe Mountain, a suspected underground nuclear complex near Natanz, as a site that "you have to take care of".
• Trump said the US had "knocked out" Iran's nuclear programme, navy, air force and military equipment, but that one or two sites remained.
• Trump said negotiations with Iran were "going fine" but that Tehran was "not very reliable", and stressed he was in no hurry to strike.
• The warning follows a Saturday morning call with Benjamin Netanyahu and a meeting with senior US military commanders, with reports that Gulf allies have been told to prepare for possible strikes as early as November 4.

What Happened

Trump addressed reporters on Saturday evening at Mar-a-Lago, where he was attending a Halloween party, and was asked about Iran. His answer combined a claim of near-total success with a pointed warning about what could still follow. "We've knocked out their nuclear," Trump said, according to AFP. "We still have to take care of, I would say one or two sites, but we can do that in 10 minutes."

He then turned to one site in particular. "You probably could look at Pickaxe Mountain, and you have to take care of that. We can do that all very quickly," Trump said. The White House's own rapid-response account amplified the same line on social media on Saturday, posting the quote about the ten-minute timeline, which ensured the remark travelled well beyond the reporters in the room.

Trump also returned to a theme he has repeated throughout the campaign: that Iran wants an agreement. "They want to reach an agreement, and we will see what happens," he said, while adding the caveat that negotiations were "going fine but you know they're not very reliable". The dual message — a deal is possible, a strike is ready — has become the administration's standard framing in the final days before the November 3 midterms.

The timing matters. Trump has pledged to refrain from further attacks until after the midterms, and the United States has not struck Iran since September 1, according to reports this weekend. MS NOW reported earlier on Saturday, citing three senior Gulf Arab officials, that Washington had warned Gulf allies to prepare for a possible new round of strikes on Iran as early as November 4, the day after the vote. No US official has publicly confirmed that date, and Rubio's comments on Saturday pointed in the opposite direction, toward patience rather than a timetable.

Background and Context

Pickaxe Mountain is a name that has circulated in Western intelligence reporting for some time, but it has rarely been named by a US president as a potential target. The site, near Iran's Natanz nuclear complex, is described by Western intelligence agencies as a suspected underground facility with a heavily fortified tunnel network, possibly used to store nuclear material. It was not among the established nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan that were targeted in earlier US strikes, in part because its underground construction and reinforced structures could make it difficult to damage through conventional aerial attacks.

Iran has consistently denied conducting nuclear activities at the site, and the International Atomic Energy Agency has struggled to inspect Iran's nuclear infrastructure since the war began, leaving the facility's precise operational status and any nuclear material there unverified. That uncertainty is part of why the naming of Pickaxe Mountain matters: Trump was not describing a site already destroyed, but one whose status is contested and whose destruction, if attempted, would be a significant escalation.

The wider war began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched joint strikes against Iran, and has continued in phases since, with periods of intense fighting followed by mediated pauses. The United States has said its campaign has degraded Iran's nuclear programme and much of its conventional military capacity, while Iran has warned repeatedly that any renewed attack would draw an immediate response. On Saturday, Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned the United States and Israel against resuming the war, ordering the armed forces to respond immediately and without geographic limits to any enemy threat, according to reports of his remarks.

Diplomacy has run in parallel throughout. Iranian negotiators have met Qatari mediators in Doha, after more than twelve hours of talks in Tehran on Friday, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described US outreach as a positive step while saying Iran sees no need to meet US officials yet. Proposals discussed through intermediaries have included a shortened reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of some sanctions, the restoration of oil waivers and the release of frozen funds, with nuclear questions treated as a second phase. None of those proposals has yet produced a public agreement.

Trump Iran Strike Warning: Why Pickaxe Mountain Matters

The focus keyword of this story is not just a place name; it is a signal about how the next phase of the war could be defined. Earlier strikes hit the known, declared facilities that the world had watched for years. Pickaxe Mountain represents the harder, murkier remainder: a site that intelligence agencies suspect, Iran denies, and inspectors cannot verify. Naming it publicly puts it on the table in a way that a generic threat to "finish the job" does not, and it forces Iran, Gulf allies and US voters to consider a specific target rather than an abstract one.

It also matters because of the ten-minute claim itself. Trump was not presenting a detailed military plan; he was presenting a capability and a temperament. The message to Tehran was that the remaining work would be fast. The message to voters, three days before the midterms, was that the war is essentially won and that any further action would be brief. The message to allies, who have been warned to prepare for November 4, was that the decision, when it comes, will not wait long. All three messages can be true at once, and all three can be read differently in Tehran, Riyadh, Jerusalem and Washington.

There is also a domestic political dimension that cannot be ignored. The war and rising fuel prices weigh heavily on Republicans in the final days of the campaign, and Trump has sought to bolster support for his party by presenting the Iran campaign as a success story. A promise that the last targets can be dealt with in ten minutes fits that story: it suggests control, speed and finality, rather than a long, costly new phase. Whether that is how events would actually unfold is a separate question, and one that military analysts have been careful to leave open.

Reactions and Quotes

Rubio's remarks earlier on Saturday provided the clearest counterweight to Trump's evening warning. Speaking at the close of the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, Rubio said Trump "hasn't made a decision" about fresh strikes and "prefers" a diplomatic solution, adding that the United States could achieve its military objectives if it sought to, but that no announcement was being made. "There are multiple talks. Talks have actually never stopped," Rubio said, a line that has been echoed by US officials throughout the autumn.

Iran's reaction, as reported on Saturday, was defiance. Khamenei's warning of an immediate response without geographic limits was accompanied by an expanded target list covering US and Israeli physical assets, according to reports, and Iranian officials have said repeatedly that any renewed attack would be met with force. Tehran has also denied that Pickaxe Mountain is a nuclear site at all, a denial that, if accepted, would make a strike there a strike on a non-nuclear mountain — a point Iran's supporters are likely to press in the days ahead.

Israel's position, as reflected in the Netanyahu call, is preparation. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump and Netanyahu spoke on Saturday morning as the United States laid plans to resume strikes, following a meeting between Trump and senior military commanders including CENTCOM chief Admiral Brad Cooper, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine. Ten US Air Force transport aircraft arrived at Israeli air bases in southern Israel last week as part of a larger Middle East air convoy transferring military equipment, according to KAN News, a movement that fits the pattern of preparation rather than immediate action.

Trump himself, asked at Mar-a-Lago about the FBI's separate attribution of the Binance hack to North Korea, suggested investigators were not yet certain — a reminder that the president's public remarks on Saturday night covered more than one crisis, and that his tone on Iran, relaxed and unhurried, was a deliberate choice rather than an accident of the occasion.

Why It Matters

This story matters because it narrows the gap between threat and action to a named place and a stated time. For months, the question has been whether the United States would resume strikes after the midterms, and if so, against what. Trump has now answered the second question, at least in outline: one or two sites, including Pickaxe Mountain, dealt with in ten minutes. That answer does not settle the first question — Rubio was explicit that no decision has been made — but it changes the debate, because a named target can be debated, verified, denied and prepared for in ways that a vague threat cannot.

It matters for the region because Gulf allies, who have been told to prepare for November 4, now have a specific scenario to plan around, and because Iran's warning of an unlimited response raises the stakes of any miscalculation. It matters for the midterms because the war, fuel prices and the president's handling of both are central to the closing arguments of both parties, and a ten-minute promise is a powerful closing line. And it matters for the nuclear question itself, because if Pickaxe Mountain does hold nuclear material, its fate could determine whether Iran's programme is truly dismantled or merely damaged.

What Happens Next

The immediate calendar is clear. The midterms take place on Tuesday, November 3. Reports point to November 4 as the earliest date for renewed strikes, though no US official has confirmed that date publicly and Trump has said he is in no hurry. Watch for three things in the coming days: whether Rubio or other US officials repeat the "no decision" line or shift toward a firmer timetable; whether Iran's negotiators in Doha make a new proposal or harden their position after the Pickaxe Mountain naming; and whether the United States moves additional military assets into the region in a way that suggests preparation is turning into execution.

If diplomacy produces a breakthrough, the Pickaxe Mountain threat may fade into the background as a piece of pressure that helped bring Tehran to the table. If it does not, the ten-minute claim will be tested against the reality of a fortified underground site, and the world will learn quickly whether the president's timeline was a boast, a plan or a warning that was meant to be taken literally. Either way, the next week will be decisive, and the site's name is now part of the public record in a way it was not before Saturday night.
