A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed at a petrol station in Philadelphia's Port Richmond neighbourhood on Halloween night, in one of three shootings reported across the city within minutes of each other on Saturday, October 31, 2026. Police said the teenager was with a group of other teenagers when he argued with a 40-year-old man at a Sunoco station at Richmond Street and Castor Avenue, and the man pulled out a gun and shot him once in the back.

The boy ran about a block before collapsing on the 3600 block of Richmond Street. His friends and two passers-by who happened to be in the area tried to help him before he was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Reporting on the case has since differed on one important detail: NBC10 Philadelphia, citing Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace, reported that the 40-year-old man was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and that a weapon was recovered, while FOX 29's Saturday-night report said no arrests had been made in any of the evening's shootings. No charge against the man in custody was reported in the coverage reviewed for this article, and police have not released the teenager's name.

Key Points

• A 15-year-old was shot once in the back at a Sunoco station at Richmond Street and Castor Avenue in Port Richmond at about 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
• Police Inspector DF Pace told NBC10 the teenager had argued with a 40-year-old man before the shooting; the man was taken into custody shortly afterwards and a weapon was recovered, according to NBC10 and CBS Philadelphia.
• FOX 29's Saturday-night report said no arrests had been made and no weapons recovered at any of the three shooting scenes, leaving the custody picture unclear in early reporting.
• Two other shootings were reported minutes apart the same evening: a 40-year-old man was killed in West Philadelphia, and a 32-year-old man was shot in the hip in Fairhill and was in stable condition.
• Police are asking anyone with information to call 215-686-TIPS (8477).

What Happened

According to NBC10 Philadelphia, the Port Richmond shooting happened at about 6:50 p.m. at the Sunoco station near Richmond Street and Castor Avenue. The 15-year-old was with a group of other teenagers when he got into an argument with a 40-year-old man. At some point during that argument, Inspector Pace said, the man pulled out a gun and shot the teenager once in the back. The boy ran about a block before collapsing on the 3600 block of Richmond Street, where two passing medical professionals stopped to help, according to other local reporting. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead there. NBC10 reported the time of death as 7:06 p.m.; FOX 29 reported 7:18 p.m. That difference is a reminder that early reports of a fast-moving night can disagree on details even when they agree on the central facts: a teenager is dead, and police say the shooting followed an argument at the petrol station.

The custody question is where the early reporting most clearly diverged. NBC10's updated account, citing Pace, said the unidentified 40-year-old man was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and that a weapon was recovered. CBS Philadelphia, cited in a compilation of local coverage, also reported that a 40-year-old man had been detained in connection with the Port Richmond killing, without saying whether he had been charged. FOX 29, by contrast, reported on Saturday night that police had searched all three scenes, had not recovered weapons at any of them, and had made no arrests as of Saturday night. This article reports both versions because readers deserve to know what is settled and what is not: the shooting and the death are confirmed by multiple outlets, while the arrest status was described differently by different outlets on Saturday night. Anyone following the case should look for a police statement confirming charges, which had not appeared in the coverage reviewed here.

The Port Richmond shooting was not the only fatal shooting that evening. At 6:49 p.m., one minute before the Port Richmond call, officers were sent to the 1200 block of North Redfield Street in West Philadelphia, where they found a 40-year-old man with several gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead just after 7:15 p.m., FOX 29 reported. NBC10 reported that Inspector Pace said the person sought in that killing was a former partner of the victim's girlfriend, and that police had not arrested anyone or located a weapon in that case at the time of reporting. A third shooting was reported at about 7:15 p.m. in the Fairhill area, on the 200 block of East Cambria Street, where a 32-year-old man was shot in the hip and was listed in stable condition on Saturday night.

Background/Context

Port Richmond is a working-class neighbourhood in north-east Philadelphia, close to the Delaware River, and the Sunoco station at Richmond Street and Castor Avenue sits on a busy commercial strip. Halloween night is traditionally one of the busiest nights of the year for police in American cities, with large numbers of children and teenagers out after dark, parties across neighbourhoods, and a higher volume of calls. That context matters here because the Port Richmond victim was out with other teenagers on a night when many young people were out in groups, and because the argument described by police appears to have escalated in minutes from a confrontation at a petrol station forecourt to a fatal shooting.

Philadelphia has wrestled for years with gun violence involving teenagers, and Halloween has repeatedly produced clusters of shootings in the city and elsewhere. The three shootings on October 31, 2026, happened within roughly half an hour and across three different neighbourhoods — West Philadelphia, Port Richmond and Fairhill — which is why police treated them as separate incidents rather than a single spree. The West Philadelphia and Fairhill cases also show why investigators were cautious in their first statements: with three scenes active at once, information about arrests, weapons and motives arrived piecemeal, and different outlets published at different moments in that process. That is also why the custody reports differ: a man detained shortly after one shooting may not yet have been reflected in a Saturday-night summary covering all three scenes.

The role of bystanders is a further thread in the Port Richmond case. Local reporting said the teenager's friends and two good Samaritans tried to render aid, and that two passing medical professionals stopped to help after he collapsed a block from the station. In shootings where minutes matter, that kind of immediate help is often the difference between a victim reaching hospital alive and dying at the scene. In this case it was not enough: the single shot to the back proved fatal, and the teenager died in hospital on Saturday evening.

Philadelphia Port Richmond Shooting: What Police Have Confirmed and What Remains Unclear

What police have confirmed, through Inspector Pace and the department's statements reported by local outlets, is the core sequence: a 15-year-old, out with other teenagers, argued with a 40-year-old man at the Sunoco station in Port Richmond on Saturday evening; the man shot the teenager once in the back; the teenager collapsed about a block away and later died in hospital. Police have also confirmed the two other shootings that evening, the death of the 40-year-old man in West Philadelphia, and the stable condition of the 32-year-old man shot in Fairhill. What remains unclear, on the reporting available, is whether the 40-year-old man in the Port Richmond case has been formally charged, what the argument was about, and whether any of the three shootings are connected. Police have not said the incidents are linked, and there is no evidence in the reporting reviewed here that they are.

The distinction between being taken into custody and being charged matters, and it is worth stating plainly. A person can be detained for questioning, or held while investigators establish what happened, without yet facing a charge. NBC10 and CBS reported a man in custody in the Port Richmond case; neither report reviewed here said he had been charged. FOX 29's Saturday-night report said no arrests had been made. Until the Philadelphia Police Department issues a charging update, the safest description is the one this article uses: a 40-year-old man was reported taken into custody by NBC10 and CBS, while FOX 29's Saturday-night account said no arrests had been made. Readers should treat the custody question as unresolved in the public record until police confirm it.

Investigators said they were reviewing video and other evidence in the Port Richmond case, and detectives were working to establish a motive. Officers located the suspect at his parents' home about a block from the scene, according to one local report, and were reviewing surveillance footage. That detail, if confirmed by police, would fit with the NBC10 account of a swift detention. It also underlines how close the whole incident was: an argument at a neighbourhood petrol station, a shooting, a collapse a block away, and a suspect found nearby. For the families involved, and for the teenagers who were with the victim, the geography of the night is painfully small.

Reactions/Quotes

Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace, speaking to NBC10, described the argument and the single shot: the teenager was with a group of other teens when he got into an argument with a 40-year-old man, and "at some point, the 40-year-old pulled out a gun and shot the teen once in the back." Pace also told NBC10 that the man was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and that a weapon was recovered. Those are the only direct police quotations in the reporting reviewed for this article, and this article does not invent further statements from police, the victim's family or city officials.

Police appealed for help from the public in the usual way, asking anyone with information about any of the three shootings to contact investigators at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or anonymously online. No statement from the teenager's family had been reported in the coverage reviewed here, and no statement from the Philadelphia mayor's office or district attorney's office about charges had appeared either. That silence is normal in the first hours after a juvenile homicide, when families are notified privately and investigators are still establishing facts, but it also means the public record remains thin on motive and on the relationship, if any, between the teenager and the man reported in custody.

Why It Matters

The Port Richmond killing matters for three reasons. First, a child is dead after an argument at a petrol station — a setting so ordinary that it strips away any sense that gun violence happens only in exceptional circumstances. A disagreement between a teenager and an adult, in a place families visit every day, ended with a single shot. Second, the case shows how quickly a city's Halloween night can turn: three shootings, two deaths and one serious injury within about half an hour, across three neighbourhoods, stretching police resources and leaving three separate investigations running in parallel. Third, the conflicting early reports about custody show why readers should be careful with first-night crime reporting. The difference between "a man is in custody" and "no arrests have been made" is not a minor detail; it changes how the public understands whether a suspect is off the streets. When outlets disagree, the honest course is to say so, as this article does, and to wait for a police charging statement.

There is also a wider question about teenagers and guns in Philadelphia. A 15-year-old out with friends on Halloween night, a 40-year-old man with a gun at a petrol station, an argument that escalates to lethal violence: each element is familiar from too many previous cases in the city. Whether the gun was legally held, how the man and the teenagers came to argue, and what might have de-escalated the confrontation are all questions investigators will need to answer. None of them can be answered from the reporting available on Saturday night, and this article does not speculate about them.

What Happens Next

Investigators will continue to review surveillance video from the Sunoco station and the surrounding streets, interview the teenagers who were with the victim, and establish the motive and the exact sequence of the argument. The next concrete development to watch for is a statement from the Philadelphia Police Department or the District Attorney's Office confirming whether the 40-year-old man reported in custody has been charged, and if so, with what offence. A charging announcement would resolve the conflict between the Saturday-night reports and would normally include the suspect's name, which has not been released in the coverage reviewed here.

Separate investigations into the West Philadelphia killing and the Fairhill shooting will also continue, and police have asked anyone with information about any of the three incidents to call 215-686-TIPS (8477). The victim's name, once released by police or family, and any funeral or community response in Port Richmond, will follow in later reporting. This article will not be updated with the victim's name until it is released through an official or family source.
