Marcel Hug won his eighth New York City Marathon men's wheelchair title on Sunday, November 1, 2026, beating American Daniel Romanchuk by just 1.13 seconds in what USA Today described as the closest victory in the history of the event. The Swiss star crossed the finish in Central Park in 1 hour, 28 minutes and 14 seconds, with Romanchuk second in 1:28:15, after 26.2 miles in which the two rivals were rarely separated by more than a second.

The result extends Hug's record total of New York men's wheelchair victories and continues a remarkable run at the world's largest marathon. It also sets the tone for a huge day in New York, with the professional women's and men's open races still on the course when the wheelchair winners were decided, and tens of thousands of mass runners making their way through all five boroughs.

What Happened

The men's professional wheelchair division started at 8 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, the first professional race of the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon, and it produced a duel that lasted almost the entire course. Hug, the defending champion and a seven-time winner in New York before Sunday, opened a 20-second lead by the 5-kilometre mark, reaching that point in 10:01.

Romanchuk, however, refused to let the race become a procession. The American closed the gap by 10K, trailing by only 0.27 seconds at that checkpoint, and from there the two men raced wheel to wheel through the five boroughs. At 25K Hug led by just 0.65 seconds. At 30K both men were clocked at 1:01:16, with Romanchuk nominally in front by 0.38 seconds. At 40K Hug was ahead by only 0.20 seconds.

Both athletes averaged approximately 3 minutes and 22 seconds per mile, a pace that underlines how evenly matched they were across a demanding course that starts on Staten Island, crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and finishes in Central Park. In the final stretch, Hug found the decisive push. USA Today reported that he overtook Romanchuk in the final 100 metres to break the tape, sealing a victory measured not in minutes or even in whole seconds, but in just over one second after more than 88 minutes of racing.

The result was reported from preliminary New York Road Runners results by FloTrack, which published its race report at 14:32 UTC on Sunday, shortly after the finish. The official results portal will provide the final confirmed classification, but the headline facts — Hug first, Romanchuk second, and a 1.13-second margin — were consistent across the early reporting.

Background/Context

The New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world, and its 2026 edition carries extra significance. It marks the 50th anniversary of the five-borough course, first run on October 24, 1976, and it features a course change for the first time in 15 years, with an adjustment in the Bronx intended to reduce the event's neighbourhood impact. More than 60,000 runners from about 140 countries were expected to take part in 2026, after a record 59,226 runners crossed the finish line in 2025.

Hug arrived in New York as the man to beat. The 40-year-old Swiss athlete, nicknamed "The Silver Bullet", had won in New York in 2013, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022, 2023 and again last year. His personal best in the men's wheelchair division is listed at 1:15:33, and he is the course record holder in New York, with a mark of 1:25:26 referenced in the live race coverage. Sunday's winning time of 1:28:14 was therefore not a record, but in a head-to-head duel it did not need to be: the race was about beating the man beside him, not the clock.

Romanchuk, meanwhile, brought his own pedigree and a comeback story. The American is a three-time New York champion, but he did not compete in the 2025 race after suffering a shoulder injury at the Sydney Marathon in an on-course collision with a spectator. His return to the New York start line, and his performance in staying with Hug for the full distance, made Sunday's race a genuine contest rather than a coronation.

David Weir, the former champion from Great Britain, was third for much of the early race, but he could not stay with the leading pair. FloTrack's live coverage had Weir more than three minutes behind by 30K, a gap that showed just how far clear Hug and Romanchuk were of the rest of the field.

NYC Marathon Wheelchair Race: A Finish Decided by 1.13 Seconds

A margin of 1.13 seconds over 26.2 miles is almost impossibly small. It is roughly the time it takes to blink twice, stretched across a race that lasted an hour and 28 minutes. The splits tell the story of why the finish was so tight: after Hug's early 20-second advantage disappeared, the two leaders were within a second of each other at every checkpoint from 20K onwards.

That kind of closeness changes the tactics of a wheelchair marathon. There is no room to relax, no safe lead to defend, and no point at which either athlete can afford a bad push or a poor line through a turn. Every bridge crossing, every turn through the boroughs and every surge in Central Park mattered, because the race was never more than a wheel-length or two apart for the final hour.

It also explains why the finish felt so dramatic for spectators in Central Park and for viewers following the live coverage. A race that had been a two-man contest for more than 20 miles came down to the final 100 metres, where Hug's closing speed — the quality that earned him the "Silver Bullet" nickname — proved just enough.

For context, Hug's winning time in 2025 was 1:30:16, when he beat Weir by almost four minutes. Sunday's race was therefore a very different kind of victory: faster, far closer, and decided against a rival of equal standing rather than against the field.

Reactions/Quotes

The early reporting on Sunday focused on the facts of the finish rather than extended post-race interviews, and no direct post-race quotations from Hug or Romanchuk were included in the preliminary reports checked for this article. What the reporting did make clear was the scale of the achievement as the race's own coverage framed it: an eighth New York title, a record total, and the closest victory in the event's history.

FloTrack described the finish as dramatic and noted that the rivals traded the lead throughout the race, while USA Today's live coverage stressed that Romanchuk and Hug stayed in a virtual tie for most of the race before Hug's final push. Those descriptions, rather than any single quotation, capture how the race was experienced by those following it: not as a comfortable defence of a title, but as a contest that was unresolved until the tape.

The result will also be read in the context of the wider marathon weekend. The women's wheelchair race was still unfolding when the men's result landed, with Switzerland's Catherine Debrunner building a lead in the early stages, and the open professional races — headed by defending champions Hellen Obiri and Benson Kipruto — were yet to reach their finishes. Hug's win was therefore the first major result of the day, not the last word on it.

Why It Matters

Hug's eighth title matters for three reasons. First, it extends a record that already stood alone. No other man has won the New York men's wheelchair race as often, and each additional victory makes the record harder for the next generation to reach.

Second, it matters because of how it was won. A dominant victory can be admired, but a 1.13-second victory is remembered. Races decided by a single second over marathon distance become part of a sport's folklore, and they give wheelchair racing — often given less attention than the open races — a headline moment on the biggest stage in marathon running.

Third, it matters as a comeback marker for Romanchuk as well as a triumph for Hug. Returning from a shoulder injury sustained in a collision with a spectator, and then pushing the sport's dominant athlete to the closest finish in New York history, is a performance that restores Romanchuk to the top of the division even in defeat. The rivalry between the two men, already one of the defining contests in wheelchair marathon racing, now has its closest chapter yet.

What Happens Next

Attention now turns to the rest of Sunday's racing in New York. The women's wheelchair result, the professional women's race that started at 8:35 a.m. Eastern and the professional men's race that started at 9:05 a.m. Eastern were all still to be decided when Hug's victory was confirmed, and the mass field of more than 60,000 runners will continue to cross the Central Park finish line through the afternoon and evening.

New York Road Runners will publish the final official results, which will confirm the full classification behind Hug and Romanchuk, including the final positions of the rest of the men's wheelchair field. Any post-race reaction from the two leading athletes will also add detail to a race that, for now, is best understood through its splits and its extraordinary margin.

For Hug, the victory adds another New York title to a career already defined by dominance in the major marathons. For Romanchuk, the 1.13-second gap will sting, but it also sets up the next meeting between the two men as a must-watch contest: the last time they raced in New York, the difference was barely more than a second.
