A Havana woman killed in a wrong-way crash on US 27 early on Sunday, November 1, 2026, is the latest fatality on Florida roads over the Halloween weekend, after a head-on collision in Gadsden County left one woman dead at the scene and another seriously injured. The crash happened at around 2:54 a.m. on US 27, also known as the Florida-Georgia Highway, at River Bluff Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, as reported by the Tallahassee Democrat. A sport utility vehicle driven by a 37-year-old Tallahassee man was travelling south in the inside northbound lane when it collided head-on with an SUV driven north in the inside lane by a 25-year-old Havana woman.

The Havana woman, who was driving the northbound SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, also a 25-year-old woman from Havana, suffered serious injuries, according to the Highway Patrol report. The Tallahassee driver suffered minor injuries. The Highway Patrol said all three people in the two vehicles were wearing seat belts. The crash remains under investigation, and no cause, charge or further detail about how the Tallahassee driver came to be travelling in the wrong direction has been released in the reports checked for this article.

What Happened

According to the Florida Highway Patrol's preliminary investigation, as reported by the Tallahassee Democrat, the two-vehicle crash happened at around 2:54 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, at US 27 and River Bluff Drive in Gadsden County, in the Florida Panhandle near the Georgia state line. US 27 in this area is a divided highway, and the northbound and southbound lanes run separately. The preliminary account says a sport utility vehicle driven by a 37-year-old Tallahassee man was travelling south in the inside northbound lane of US 27. In other words, he was driving against the flow of traffic in the lane closest to the centre of the road.

At the same time, another SUV, driven by a 25-year-old Havana woman, was travelling north in the inside lane, in the correct direction. The two SUVs collided head-on in the northbound lanes. The Havana woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, also a 25-year-old woman from Havana, suffered serious injuries. The Tallahassee driver, the man who had been travelling the wrong way, suffered minor injuries. The Highway Patrol reported that all three people were wearing seat belts, a detail that matters because seat-belt use is one of the few protective factors that can be confirmed in a head-on collision at highway speed, even though it could not prevent a fatal outcome here.

Emergency responders from several Gadsden County agencies attended the scene. The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by Gadsden County Emergency Medical Services, the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office and Gadsden County Fire Rescue. That multi-agency response is standard for a fatal highway crash in a rural county, where the Highway Patrol investigates the crash itself while county fire and medical crews treat and transport the injured and the sheriff's office assists with the scene and traffic.

Background/Context

US 27, known in this stretch as the Florida-Georgia Highway, runs north-south through Gadsden County in Florida's Panhandle, connecting Tallahassee, the state capital, with Havana, a small town to the north-west, and onward toward the Georgia border. Havana is a small community in Gadsden County, and the road between Havana and Tallahassee is a route local residents use daily. A crash at 2:54 a.m. on a Sunday, in the hours after Halloween night, therefore touches a small, close-knit area directly, and the fact that both women in the northbound vehicle were from Havana, and the other driver from nearby Tallahassee, underlines how local this tragedy is.

Wrong-way crashes are, by the nature of the error, among the most dangerous kinds of road collision. When two vehicles meet head-on, their speeds add together at the moment of impact, which is why wrong-way driving, though relatively uncommon compared with other crash types, so often produces fatal or serious injuries. Road-safety researchers have long noted that wrong-way crashes are more likely at night, when drivers may be confused by interchanges, tired, or impaired, although this article does not suggest any of those factors in this case: the Highway Patrol has not released a cause, and no allegation about the Tallahassee driver's condition has been made in the reports checked. What can be said is only what the preliminary investigation establishes: a driver travelling south in a northbound lane, a head-on collision, and three people injured, one fatally.

The crash also came during a Halloween weekend that produced several fatal and serious road incidents across Florida. In a separate incident on Halloween night, two Fort Myers residents were killed in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 75, known as Alligator Alley, in Broward County, also investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol. US News Pulse has covered that crash separately. The two incidents are unrelated, happened at opposite ends of the state, and involved different circumstances, but together they form a grim picture of a single holiday weekend on Florida's highways, and a reminder that the hours after dark on a holiday weekend are among the most dangerous times to be on the road.

Wrong-Way Crash on US 27: What Investigators Have Confirmed

What the Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed so far is precise but limited, and it is worth setting it out exactly. The crash happened at around 2:54 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, on US 27 at River Bluff Drive in Gadsden County. A 37-year-old Tallahassee man was driving an SUV south in the inside northbound lane. A 25-year-old Havana woman was driving an SUV north in the inside lane. The two vehicles collided head-on in the northbound lanes. The Havana woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, a 25-year-old woman also from Havana, suffered serious injuries. The Tallahassee driver suffered minor injuries. All three were wearing seat belts.

What has not been confirmed is equally important, and this article does not fill those gaps. The Highway Patrol has not said how the Tallahassee driver entered the northbound lanes, at which interchange or access point, or how far he had travelled in the wrong direction before the collision. It has not said whether any charge will follow, whether impairment, distraction or confusion played a role, or what speed either vehicle was travelling at. It has not released the names of any of the three people involved. Those details, if they are released at all, will come from the full crash report and any subsequent Highway Patrol statement, and they are the questions that investigators will now be working to answer.

It is also worth noting what the seat-belt detail does and does not tell us. All three people were wearing seat belts, according to the Highway Patrol. In a head-on collision, a seat belt keeps occupants in place and greatly improves the chance of survival, but it cannot overcome the combined force of two vehicles meeting at highway speed. The fact that one woman died and another was seriously injured despite both wearing seat belts is a measure of the violence of this kind of crash, not a failure of the restraint.

Reactions/Quotes

No direct quotations from the Florida Highway Patrol, from the families of those involved, or from witnesses were included in the reports checked for this article, and this article invents none. The Highway Patrol account, as carried by the Tallahassee Democrat, is limited to the preliminary facts set out above: the time, the place, the directions of travel, the ages and home towns of the three people, their injuries, the seat-belt detail, and the fact that the crash remains under investigation.

That absence of quoted reaction is normal at this stage of a fatal crash investigation. The Highway Patrol's first public account of a fatal crash is usually a short, factual release, and families are often not in a position to speak publicly in the first hours after being told of a death or a serious injury. No statement from the victims' families, from Gadsden County officials, or from road-safety organisations had been reported in the sources checked for this article, and this article does not claim otherwise. If the Highway Patrol or the families release further statements, they will be added to this coverage.

For drivers in the Tallahassee and Havana area, the practical message is the investigation itself. Anyone who was on US 27 near River Bluff Drive in the early hours of Sunday, or who saw a vehicle travelling the wrong way on the highway, may hold information that matters to investigators, and the Highway Patrol's crash investigation will typically seek witness accounts alongside physical evidence from the scene, such as tyre marks, vehicle damage and the final positions of the vehicles.

Why It Matters

A wrong-way crash matters beyond its casualty count because it is, in principle, preventable, and because it kills people who did nothing wrong. The two women from Havana were travelling in the correct lane, in the correct direction, wearing their seat belts. One of them is dead, and the other is seriously injured, because another vehicle was travelling toward them in their lane. That asymmetry — an ordinary, lawful journey meeting an error that leaves no room to escape — is what makes wrong-way crashes so frightening for other drivers, and why highway agencies invest in wrong-way signs, pavement markings, and, increasingly, detection systems at interchanges.

The crash also matters for a small community. Havana is a small town, and the loss of a 25-year-old resident, with another young woman from the same town seriously injured, will be felt directly by families, friends and neighbours. In a small town, a fatal crash is not an anonymous statistic; it is a person known to many people, and the grief and shock spread quickly. The decision not to name the victims in this article reflects the fact that their names had not been released in the reports checked, not a lack of respect for who they were.

Finally, the crash is a reminder of the risks of night driving on divided highways, particularly on holiday weekends. Drivers heading home in the early hours, after a night out or a long day, are at greater risk of confusion at interchanges and of encountering a driver who has made a wrong turn onto a highway. The Highway Patrol's advice in such situations is consistent: if you see a vehicle coming toward you in your lane, slow down, move to the right, and pull off the road if you can do so safely, and call emergency services to report the wrong-way driver. In this case, at 2:54 a.m. on a dark highway, the two women may have had only seconds to react, and this article does not speculate about what they saw or did.

What Happens Next

The Florida Highway Patrol's investigation remains ongoing. The next steps, in the usual course, are for troopers to complete a full crash report, which will establish the sequence of events, the point at which the Tallahassee driver entered the northbound lanes, and the speeds and positions of both vehicles. Investigators may also review any available camera footage, examine both vehicles, and interview the two surviving people once they are able to give an account. Whether any charge follows will depend on the findings of that investigation and on the State Attorney's review, and it may take days or weeks before a decision is announced.

The condition of the seriously injured passenger may also become clearer as hospitals and the Highway Patrol release updates, although the reports available on Sunday described her injuries only as serious. The names of the three people involved may be released in the full crash report, subject to family notification, and this article will be updated if they are.

This article will be updated if the Florida Highway Patrol releases further details, including the full crash report, a cause, any charge, or the identities of those involved. Until then, the confirmed picture stands: a 25-year-old Havana woman dead, another 25-year-old Havana woman seriously injured, a 37-year-old Tallahassee driver with minor injuries, and a wrong-way, head-on crash on US 27 in Gadsden County under investigation.
