Two Fort Myers residents killed in a Halloween crash on Alligator Alley were the victims of a three-vehicle collision on Interstate 75 in Broward County late on Saturday, October 31, 2026, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The crash happened shortly before 10 p.m. on the eastbound side of the interstate, just west of Mile Marker 45, and left both people in a Toyota Camry dead at the scene, while two other people were injured, one of them seriously. It was one of two fatal Florida highway crashes reported over the Halloween weekend, the other being a wrong-way, head-on crash on US 27 in Gadsden County early on Sunday that killed a 25-year-old Havana woman, which US News Pulse has covered separately.

According to the Highway Patrol account, as reported by the Fort Myers News-Press, an 18-year-old woman was driving a 2018 Toyota Camry east in the outside lane of Interstate 75, with a 29-year-old man as her passenger. At the same time, a U-Haul truck was parked on the outside paved shoulder of the eastbound carriageway, just west of the mile marker, and a 2019 BMW X5 was travelling east in the inside lane, just west of the same marker. The Camry driver failed to maintain control of her car and travelled off the road to the right. The front of the Camry hit the back of the parked U-Haul truck, redirecting the Camry into the path of the BMW. The left front of the Camry then hit the right side of the BMW, propelling the BMW in a north-east direction and causing it to overturn. Both Camry occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

What Happened

The Highway Patrol's account, as reported by the News-Press, sets out a chain of events in three stages, and it is worth following them in order because they explain how a single loss of control became a three-vehicle crash. First, the 18-year-old woman driving the 2018 Toyota Camry east in the outside lane of Interstate 75, just west of Mile Marker 45 in Broward County, failed to maintain control of her car and travelled off the road to the right. Second, the front of the Camry hit the back of a U-Haul truck that was parked on the outside paved shoulder of the eastbound carriageway, just west of the mile marker. Third, that impact redirected the Camry into the path of a 2019 BMW X5 that was travelling east in the inside lane, just west of the same marker. The left front of the Camry then hit the right side of the BMW, propelling the BMW in a north-east direction and causing it to overturn.

The outcome for the people in the three vehicles was starkly different. Both people in the Camry — the 18-year-old driver and the 29-year-old man travelling with her, both Fort Myers residents — were pronounced dead at the scene. The sole occupant of the U-Haul truck, a 40-year-old man from West Palm Beach, suffered minor injuries. The BMW driver, a 19-year-old, suffered minor injuries, while his female passenger, aged 37, suffered serious bodily injuries. Both BMW occupants are from Port Charlotte, according to the Highway Patrol release. The crash remains under investigation, and no further detail about why the Camry driver lost control, or whether any charge will follow, has been released in the reports checked for this article.

Alligator Alley is the name for the stretch of Interstate 75 that crosses the Everglades between Naples on Florida's west coast and Fort Lauderdale on the east coast. It is a long, straight, high-speed corridor through remote wetland, with few exits and long distances between services, and it carries heavy holiday and weekend traffic between Florida's coasts. A crash on Alligator Alley at night therefore presents particular challenges for emergency responders, who may have to travel a considerable distance to reach the scene, and for other drivers, who may have limited opportunities to leave the interstate while the road is closed or restricted for an investigation.

Background/Context

Interstate 75 through Broward County, in the eastern part of Alligator Alley, is a busy route even late at night, particularly on a holiday weekend. Halloween night, Saturday, October 31, is one of the busiest nights of the year for evening travel, with people heading to and from parties, events and family gatherings, and with more young drivers on the road than on an ordinary Saturday. The crash happened shortly before 10 p.m., a time when Halloween evening travel was still under way, although this article does not suggest that the Camry driver or any other person involved was travelling to or from a Halloween event: the Highway Patrol release gives no such detail, and no such claim is made here.

The circumstances described in the Highway Patrol account also raise a practical question that investigators will now examine: why the Camry left the carriageway. The release says only that the driver "failed to maintain control" of the car and travelled off the road to the right. That phrase, used in Highway Patrol releases, covers a wide range of possibilities — a moment of distraction, a steering correction, a tyre or mechanical issue, a medical event, or a reaction to something on the road — and this article does not choose among them, because the investigation has not done so publicly. What is clear is the sequence that followed: a collision with a parked truck on the shoulder, a redirection back into the traffic lanes, and a second collision with a vehicle in the inside lane, which then overturned.

The presence of a parked truck on the shoulder is also part of the story, though not, on the information released, a cause that can be assigned. Trucks and other vehicles do stop on interstate shoulders for breakdowns and other reasons, and a vehicle on the shoulder is a hazard that drivers are expected to pass with care. In this case, the U-Haul truck was parked on the outside paved shoulder, and the Camry's front hit its back after leaving the carriageway. The truck's occupant suffered only minor injuries, which is consistent with a rear impact on a large, stationary vehicle, but the impact was enough to redirect the much smaller Camry into the path of the BMW.

Alligator Alley Crash: What Investigators Have Confirmed

What the Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed so far is a detailed sequence, and it is worth setting it out exactly. Shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026, on eastbound Interstate 75 just west of Mile Marker 45 in Broward County, an 18-year-old woman was driving a 2018 Toyota Camry east in the outside lane with a 29-year-old man as passenger. A U-Haul truck was parked on the outside paved shoulder of the eastbound carriageway, just west of the mile marker. A 2019 BMW X5 was travelling east in the inside lane, just west of the same marker. The Camry driver failed to maintain control, travelled off the road to the right, hit the back of the U-Haul truck, was redirected into the BMW's path, and hit the BMW's right side with the Camry's left front, propelling the BMW north-east and causing it to overturn. Both Camry occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. The U-Haul occupant, a 40-year-old West Palm Beach man, suffered minor injuries. The BMW driver, 19, suffered minor injuries, and his 37-year-old female passenger suffered serious bodily injuries. Both BMW occupants are from Port Charlotte.

What has not been confirmed is why the Camry left the road, whether speed, distraction, impairment, a mechanical fault or another factor played a role, and whether any charge will follow. The Highway Patrol has not released the names of any of the people involved, and this article does not name them. Those details, if they are released, will come from the full crash report and any subsequent Highway Patrol statement, and they are the questions that investigators will now be working to answer. The fact that the two people killed were both from Fort Myers, at the western end of Alligator Alley, and that the BMW occupants were from Port Charlotte, also on Florida's west coast, suggests a journey across the state, but the Highway Patrol release does not state where any of the vehicles were travelling to, and this article does not assume a destination.

Reactions/Quotes

No direct quotations from the Florida Highway Patrol, from the families of those involved, or from witnesses were included in the reports checked for this article, and this article invents none. The Highway Patrol account, as carried by the Fort Myers News-Press, is limited to the sequence and the injuries set out above, and to the statement that the crash remains under investigation. The News-Press article was reported by Dave Osborn, the regional features editor of the Naples Daily News and News-Press, and it originally appeared in the Fort Myers News-Press.

That absence of quoted reaction is normal at this stage of a fatal crash investigation. The Highway Patrol's first public account is usually a short, factual release, and families are often not in a position to speak publicly in the first hours after being told of a death or a serious injury. No statement from the victims' families, from Broward County officials, or from road-safety organisations had been reported in the sources checked for this article, and this article does not claim otherwise. If the Highway Patrol or the families release further statements, they will be added to this coverage.

Why It Matters

A crash that kills two young people matters for reasons that go beyond the casualty count, and the ages of the victims are central to that. The driver was 18 years old, and her passenger was 29. Both were from Fort Myers, and both died at the scene on a Saturday night. For their families, for their friends, and for the Fort Myers community, the loss is immediate and personal, and the fact that the crash happened on a holiday night, when many people were out celebrating, will make it harder, not easier, to absorb.

The crash also matters as a reminder of how quickly a single loss of control on a high-speed interstate can become a multi-vehicle tragedy. The Camry did not collide head-on with another moving vehicle in its own lane; it left the carriageway, struck a parked truck, and was redirected into another lane, where it struck a second moving vehicle that then overturned. Each stage of that chain was, in itself, survivable for some of those involved — the truck occupant and the BMW driver both suffered only minor injuries — but for the two people in the Camry, the combined sequence was fatal. That is the nature of high-speed interstate crashes: the outcome often depends less on a single impact than on the chain of impacts that follows.

Finally, the crash is part of a wider Halloween weekend picture on Florida's roads. Together with the wrong-way crash on US 27 in Gadsden County early on Sunday, which killed a 25-year-old Havana woman and seriously injured another woman from the same town, it means at least three people died in two separate Florida highway crashes in the space of a few hours over the Halloween weekend, with several more seriously injured. The two crashes are unrelated, at opposite ends of the state, and involved different circumstances, but they share a timing — late on Halloween night and in the early hours of the morning after — that road-safety campaigners consistently identify as a period of heightened risk.

What Happens Next

The Florida Highway Patrol's investigation remains ongoing. The next steps, in the usual course, are for troopers to complete a full crash report, which will establish why the Camry left the carriageway, the speeds and positions of all three vehicles, and the full sequence of impacts. Investigators may also examine the Camry for mechanical faults, review any available camera or toll data from Interstate 75, and interview the surviving occupants once they are able to give an account. Whether any charge follows will depend on the findings of that investigation and on the State Attorney's review, and it may take days or weeks before a decision is announced.

The condition of the seriously injured BMW passenger, a 37-year-old woman from Port Charlotte, may also become clearer as hospitals and the Highway Patrol release updates, although the reports available on Sunday described her injuries only as serious bodily injuries. The names of the people involved may be released in the full crash report, subject to family notification, and this article will be updated if they are.

This article will be updated if the Florida Highway Patrol releases further details, including the full crash report, a cause, any charge, or the identities of those involved. Until then, the confirmed picture stands: two Fort Myers residents dead, two other people injured, one of them seriously, and a three-vehicle Halloween night crash on Alligator Alley under investigation.
