Newark, Delaware police have confirmed that six people were injured in the Halloween-night shooting on Main Street near the University of Delaware, in the first confirmed victim count since the gunfire sent a crowded Halloween crowd running on Saturday night. All six victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment, police said, but their conditions had not been released as of Sunday morning, and no arrest had been announced.

The update changes the picture from the first hours after the shooting, when police had confirmed the location and the road closure but had not confirmed how many people were hurt. Our earlier report on the incident deliberately did not state unverified social-media victim counts as fact. Police have now confirmed the number: six injured, all transported to hospital, with no fatalities reported in the accounts checked for this update.

What Happened

The shooting happened at 11:13 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, on the south sidewalk of East Main Street, according to Newark police, directly across from Choate Street. The location is the heart of downtown Newark, a few steps from the University of Delaware campus, and on a Saturday Halloween night it was packed. Delaware Online reported that students described bigger crowds than usual, because the holiday fell on a Saturday and coincided with other downtown events and specials, and that a video posted by Klondike Kate's on Facebook showed a long line of costume-clad people wrapping around the building before the shooting.

When shots were fired, the crowd scattered. Video shared on social media showed people running down Main Street, and Delaware Online noted that it was unclear whether additional people were injured in the rush itself, with at least one online video showing a person being hit by a car while trying to run away. That possible additional injury is not counted in the confirmed total of six shooting victims, and this article does not add it to the toll.

The University of Delaware issued an emergency alert at 11:29 p.m., telling students and others in the area to avoid East Main Street and Choate Street while police investigated. Police closed Main Street while they worked the scene. Delaware Online reported the closure as running from South Chapel Street to Haines Street for about five hours, while the first police account put the closure as Library Avenue to Academy Street; the difference reflects the wider investigation area and the core closed stretch, and by Sunday morning the street was returning to normal, with people getting breakfast and starting their days. One account put the reopening at about 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Newark police, the University of Delaware Police Department and Delaware State Police were all present at the scene, and officers were seen examining debris near the area. A police mobile command vehicle was parked on Main Street on Sunday morning, and police tape cordoned off a parking lot on Main Street as the investigation continued into daylight.

Background: A Crowded Halloween Night in a College Town

Newark is a college town dominated by the University of Delaware, with many students living downtown and around the area where the shooting happened. That is why a Saturday-night shooting on Main Street, on Halloween, drew an immediate university alert and a large police response, and why the first hours were dominated by two questions: how many people were hurt, and whether it was safe to go back out.

The first police release, at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, said there did not appear to be an ongoing threat to public safety, but it did not confirm a victim count. Our earlier report, published in those first hours, recorded the road closure, the university alert, the helicopter response and Klondike Kate's clarification that the shooting was not on its property, and it explicitly held back from stating a victim number because none had been confirmed. The Sunday-morning confirmation of six injured victims is therefore the first confirmed toll, not a revision of a previously confirmed figure.

The Newark shooting was one of several shootings in nightlife and entertainment districts across the United States over the Halloween weekend. In Dallas, Texas, police said four people were dead and 15 injured after separate shootings in the Deep Ellum district. In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight injured outside Legion Field after the Magic City Classic football game. In Bloomington, Illinois, a 19-year-old woman was killed and seven other people injured near Illinois Wesleyan University. In Fayetteville, Arkansas, six people were injured near the Dickson Street entertainment district. Police have not suggested any connection between the Newark shooting and the incidents in other states.

Newark Delaware Shooting: What Police Have Confirmed

The confirmed facts, as of Sunday morning, are narrow and should be stated without embellishment. Six people were injured and taken to hospitals. The shooting happened at about 11:13 p.m. on October 31 on the south sidewalk of East Main Street, across from Choate Street. The University of Delaware alert went out at 11:29 p.m. Main Street was closed for several hours and had reopened by Sunday morning. Police say there does not appear to be an ongoing threat.

What has not been confirmed is equally important. Police have not released the victims' names, ages or conditions. They have not said how many people fired shots, what weapon was used, or what led to the shooting. They have not announced an arrest, and they have not described a suspect. The University of Delaware said in its updates that it would provide further information online as it became available, and a university spokesperson said the same to the Associated Press.

One detail from the first night deserves care. The university's student newspaper, The Review, reported that as of 1 a.m. on Sunday a Newark police spokesperson said no information on victims or suspects was available and noted that there were no reports of fatalities. That is consistent with the Sunday-morning position: six injured, no deaths reported, and no suspect information released.

Reactions

Delaware Governor Matt Meyer issued a statement on November 1 praising the law enforcement and emergency personnel who answered the call on Saturday night and sending condolences to the families affected. He said no family should have to receive the call that someone they love has been shot, and that people in Newark and Ellendale were facing pain and fear that no one should have to endure. He added that Delaware State Police are helping Newark police with the investigation, and said: "Every Delawarean deserves to feel safe in their community. This is not normal. We must never accept gun violence as a part of life in Delaware."

State Representatives Mara Gorman and Cyndie Romer, whose districts include the University of Delaware campus, issued a joint statement on Sunday morning. They said they were heartbroken by the horrifying news of the shooting on Main Street late on Saturday night, that Main Street is the heart of their community, and that no one should ever have to fear for their safety while walking through their town. They said fighting for public safety measures and efforts to reduce gun violence was a deeply personal commitment for both of them, and they encouraged anyone with information to reach out to police.

The governor's statement also noted a second Halloween-night shooting in Delaware, downstate in Ellendale, where Delaware State Police confirmed they were investigating a shooting reported shortly before 10 p.m. on October 31 in the area of North Old State Road and Beach Highway. Few details were available about that incident by Sunday midday, and it is a separate investigation from the Newark shooting.

Why It Matters

A confirmed toll matters because the first hours of a shooting are when rumour moves fastest. On Saturday night, social-media posts carried unverified victim counts, and the responsible course was to wait for police. Now that police have confirmed six injured, readers, families and students have a figure they can rely on, together with the limits that still apply: conditions unknown, no suspect named, no motive established.

The police appeal for video matters for a different reason. Main Street on Halloween night was full of phones, and the investigation now depends in part on what those phones recorded. A photograph or a short clip that shows the moments before or after the shots, the direction of movement, or a vehicle leaving the area could matter more than any single witness account, and police have made the route for submitting that material public: the department's evidence portal, or Detective Paige Klein directly.

The wider Halloween weekend pattern also matters, but it must not be overstated. Six shootings in different states on the same weekend do not prove a coordinated pattern, and police in each city are investigating their own incident. What the weekend does show is the vulnerability of crowded nightlife streets on a night when thousands of people are out in costume, and the speed with which a single incident can empty a main street and fill a hospital emergency department.

What Happens Next

Newark police will continue to review footage and evidence collected along Main Street, and updates are expected as detectives work through that material. The next confirmed developments to watch for are the victims' conditions, any identification of a suspect or an arrest, and any police statement on what led to the shooting. Until police say otherwise, the position remains: six injured, no arrest announced, no ongoing threat identified, and an active investigation.

Anyone who was on Main Street on Saturday night, or who has photographs or video from the area, should submit them through the Newark Police Department's evidence portal or contact Detective Paige Klein at (302) 366-7100, extension 3480, or by email at pklein@newark.de.us. Anyone who needs support after the incident should contact the University of Delaware Police Department, which advised students who were struggling to get home on Saturday night to contact university police for assistance.
