The Lamar Jackson thumb injury stunned Baltimore's return plans on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when the Ravens quarterback left his comeback game against the Buffalo Bills after just one play. Jackson, playing for the first time since a high ankle sprain in Week 4, injured his right thumb on Baltimore's first offensive snap at Highmark Stadium, headed to the locker room for examination and was listed as questionable to return.

Jackson was hurt as he released a pass intended for wide receiver Zay Flowers. His throwing hand struck a Bills defender during the follow-through, and the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player immediately grabbed his hand, jogged off the field and did not return to the sideline before being taken inside. Team medical staff took him to the X-ray room, and backup Tyler Huntley stepped in at quarterback for Baltimore.

Key Points

• Lamar Jackson suffered a right thumb injury on the Ravens' first offensive play against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and was listed as questionable to return.
• Jackson was making his return after missing three games with a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 4 against the Tennessee Titans, and had practised fully all week with no injury designation.
• The pass, intended for Zay Flowers, fell incomplete as Jackson's throwing hand struck Bills defensive end Greg Rousseau during the follow-through.
• Jackson was taken to the locker room and then to the X-ray room, while Tyler Huntley replaced him at quarterback for the Ravens.
• Buffalo led 10-0 when Jackson left the game, having scored on both of its opening drives against a Baltimore side already chasing the game.

What Happened

The sequence unfolded almost as soon as Baltimore's offence took the field. Buffalo had won the toss and elected to receive, and quarterback Josh Allen drove the Bills to an early touchdown, a tush-push score on fourth down that put the home side 7-0 up. Baltimore's opening kickoff return set up its first possession, but the drive lasted a single snap. Jackson dropped back, faced pressure in the pocket and threw toward Flowers on the right side of the field. The pass fell incomplete, and as Jackson completed his throwing motion his hand collided with a rushing defender.

Jackson's reaction told the story before any official announcement. He looked down at his hand at once, held it as he left the field and jogged toward the sideline medical area. Within minutes, reports from the stadium confirmed that he had been taken to the locker room, and NBC Sports reported that the team's medical staff took him to the X-ray room. The Ravens' official designation followed: a right thumb injury, questionable to return. Huntley, who has long served as Baltimore's backup, took over under centre while Jackson was examined.

Buffalo extended its lead to 10-0 while Jackson was inside, scoring on both of its first two drives. That context mattered for Baltimore: instead of easing its returning quarterback back into rhythm against one of the league's highest-scoring offences, the Ravens were suddenly trailing by double digits with their backup in the game. The Bills entered the contest at 5-1, averaging 32.8 points per game, and their efficiency on offence had been central to their fast start to the season.

Background/Context

Jackson's comeback had been one of the main storylines of Week 8. He suffered a high ankle sprain during the first half of Baltimore's Week 4 victory over the Tennessee Titans, an injury that sidelined him for the next three games. During that absence the Ravens, who entered Sunday at 4-3, were trying to stay in touch in the AFC North while losing back-to-back games to Cleveland and Cincinnati, according to pre-game reporting.

The week leading into Buffalo had gone as well as Baltimore could have hoped. Jackson practised fully throughout the week, carried no injury designation on the final injury report and was set to play with his left ankle taped. Before the game he spoke about feeling freer in his movement than he had in weeks, saying he no longer felt like a statue and could move around a little better. He added that he still felt some pain, but described it as bearable and said that was enough for him to give it a shot. Those comments, reported before kickoff, framed Sunday as a test of whether the ankle would hold up over a full game against a fast Buffalo defence.

Instead, the test lasted one play, and the injury that stopped it had nothing to do with the ankle. Thumb injuries are a particular concern for a quarterback because the thumb stabilises the ball on release and on the follow-through, and any damage to the joint or surrounding structures can affect grip, accuracy and the ability to take a snap cleanly. That is why the X-ray examination mattered so much: it would determine whether the injury was a bruise or a sprain that might allow a return, or something more serious that would keep Jackson out for the rest of the game and possibly longer.

Lamar Jackson Thumb Injury: What We Know So Far

What is confirmed at this stage is narrow but clear. Jackson injured his right thumb, not his left ankle, on the first play of Baltimore's first offensive series. He was taken to the locker room and then to the X-ray room. The team listed him as questionable to return, which means a return had not been ruled out when the designation was issued, but also that it was far from guaranteed. Huntley replaced him, and Buffalo led 10-0 at the time Jackson left the game.

What is not yet confirmed is just as important. No X-ray result had been publicly reported at the time of writing, and no timetable beyond the in-game questionable tag had been given. Reports did not say whether Jackson had suffered a fracture, a dislocation, a sprain or a deep bruise, and the team had not announced whether he would be ruled out for the remainder of the game. Any claim beyond the confirmed facts would be speculation, and this article will be updated as the Ravens release more information.

The distinction between the two injuries also matters for how the rest of Baltimore's season is judged. The ankle injury was a known quantity that the team had managed for a month, with a full week of practice behind Jackson. A new thumb injury, suffered on a routine throwing motion against a pass rush, is a separate problem with its own recovery path, and it arrives at a point in the season when Baltimore can ill afford to lose its starting quarterback again.

Reactions/Quotes

No direct quotes from Jackson, the Ravens' coaching staff or the team's medical personnel about the thumb injury itself had been published at the time of writing, and this article does not invent any. The reporting that was available came from stadium updates and live coverage: the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle recorded the moment at 1:19 p.m. ET, noting that Jackson appeared to have his hand hit by Greg Rousseau as he threw and was taken into the locker room, while NBC Sports reported that he was taken to the X-ray room and was questionable to return.

Jackson's own words before the game, reported ahead of kickoff, captured how much the return meant to him after three weeks on the sideline. He said he felt able to move around a little better and that, while he still felt pain, it was bearable enough for him to give it a shot. Those remarks now read very differently: a player who had fought his way back from one injury was stopped, within seconds of his return, by another.

The wider reaction across the league was one of disbelief at the timing. Jackson had missed three games, completed a full week of practice and started the game without an injury designation, only for his comeback to end on the first snap. For a Ravens team that had built its season around its quarterback's dual-threat ability, the sight of Huntley warming up while Jackson was examined inside was the worst possible start to a game against a 5-1 Buffalo side.

Why It Matters

The injury matters first for Baltimore's season. At 4-3, the Ravens entered Week 8 already trailing in the AFC North race and coming off two straight defeats. Their path back into contention depended heavily on Jackson's return, not only for his passing and running but for the way defences must account for him on every snap. Losing him again, even for part of a game, forces Baltimore to lean on Huntley and on a running game that becomes far easier to defend when the quarterback is not a running threat.

It matters second for the AFC picture. Buffalo, at 5-1 and averaging nearly 33 points per game, is chasing the conference's top seed, and a win over a Jackson-less Baltimore would strengthen its position considerably. The Bills' early 10-0 lead, built before Jackson left, already showed how quickly they could punish a slow start, and playing against a backup quarterback changes the balance of the game entirely.

It matters third because of the pattern it extends. Jackson's career has repeatedly been interrupted by injuries at moments when Baltimore needed him most, and each absence raises the same questions about durability and about how the Ravens protect their most important player. A thumb injury suffered on a pass rush is not a question of toughness or preparation; it is a reminder of how exposed a quarterback's throwing hand is on every dropback, and how quickly a season can turn on a single collision.

What Happens Next

The immediate next step is the X-ray result and the Ravens' in-game decision. If the examination shows no fracture and Jackson can grip and throw without significant pain, he could return to the game, although the team would weigh the risk of further damage against the state of the score. If the result is worse, Baltimore will rule him out and Huntley will finish the game, with the team providing an update after the final whistle.

Beyond Sunday, the Ravens will face a fresh round of decisions. A thumb injury that keeps Jackson out for days rather than weeks would be a relief, but any fracture or ligament damage could mean a longer absence and another stretch with Huntley under centre. Baltimore's upcoming schedule, its position in the division and the approaching trade deadline on November 10 all sharpen the stakes: the team must decide whether it can wait for Jackson to heal or whether it needs to adjust its plans.

For now, the only honest status is the one the team gave: questionable. Ravens fans, and the wider NFL audience, will be watching the sideline and the post-game injury report for the next update, and this story will be followed up as soon as the X-ray result and Jackson's status are confirmed.
