An Ellendale shooting killed a 17-year-old girl and wounded eight other people on Saturday night, October 31, 2026, when an unknown suspect opened fire from a neighbouring property into a crowd at an outdoor party in the small Sussex County town, Delaware State Police said in a release posted on Sunday, November 1. The teenager, from Seaford, was taken to hospital with life-threatening gunshot injuries and died there, while a 20-year-old man from Seaford remains in stable condition with life-threatening injuries and seven other victims were treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Troopers were called at about 10 p.m. on Saturday to the 18000 block of Beach Highway in Ellendale, a rural community in southern Delaware, after reports of a shooting. Arriving troopers located multiple victims with gunshot wounds, the agency said, and the preliminary investigation revealed that during an outdoor party, an unknown suspect opened fire from a neighbouring property into the crowd, striking nine victims.

The victims, as listed by police, were: a 17-year-old female from Seaford, who was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening gunshot injuries and died there; a 20-year-old male from Seaford, transported with life-threatening injuries and now in stable condition; two 17-year-old males from Selbyville; a 19-year-old female from Ellendale; a 20-year-old female from Seaford; a 20-year-old female from Greenwood; a 20-year-old male from Seaford; and a 22-year-old female from Laurel. Police have not released the name of the teenager who died, saying it is being withheld until her family can be notified. They have not named any of the other victims either, and they have not described the weapon used, the number of shots fired, or whether the suspect is believed to have acted alone. The release does not say whether the party was a Halloween gathering, though the shooting took place on Halloween night, and it does not say how many people were at the party in total.

The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is actively investigating, the agency said, and detectives are urging anyone who attended the party or has information relevant to the investigation to contact Detective B. McDerby at (302) 741-2821. Information may also be provided by private Facebook message to Delaware State Police or by contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) 847-3333. Background and Context

Ellendale is a small town in Sussex County, in southern Delaware, a largely rural area of farms, small communities and two-lane highways, about 20 miles inland from the Delaware beaches. Beach Highway, also known as Route 16, runs east-west through the town, and the 18000 block lies on the outskirts of the community. Outdoor parties and gatherings are common in the area, particularly on holiday weekends, and the shooting on Halloween night adds Ellendale to a grim list of American communities where a festive gathering turned violent.

The shooting came during a Halloween weekend in which gun violence broke out in nightlife and entertainment districts across the country. In Dallas, four people were killed and 15 injured in three separate shootings in the Deep Ellum entertainment district in the early hours of Sunday. In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight wounded in a shooting outside Legion Field after the annual Magic City Classic football game on Saturday night. In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot late on Saturday near the University of Delaware campus. Police have not said the Ellendale shooting is connected to any of those incidents, and the Delaware State Police release treats it as a separate investigation.

Delaware has seen a series of shootings in recent years that have drawn state and local attention, particularly shootings involving young victims at gatherings. The Ellendale case, with a 17-year-old killed and several other teenagers among the wounded, fits a pattern that public health researchers and law enforcement officials have repeatedly flagged: outdoor parties and large gatherings, especially on holiday weekends, can become targets or flashpoints, and the victims are often young people with no connection to any dispute that may have sparked the violence.

Ellendale Shooting: What We Know So Far

Here is what has been confirmed, and what remains unknown, about the Ellendale shooting.

Confirmed: Nine people were shot at an outdoor party in the 18000 block of Beach Highway in Ellendale at about 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026. A 17-year-old girl from Seaford died in hospital. A 20-year-old man from Seaford is in stable condition with life-threatening injuries. Seven other victims, aged 17 to 22 and from Selbyville, Ellendale, Seaford, Greenwood and Laurel, have non-life-threatening injuries. The gunfire came from a neighbouring property, according to the preliminary investigation, and the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is investigating.

Not yet known: The identity of the suspect, whether anyone has been arrested or charged, the motive, the weapon used, the number of shots fired, whether the shooting was targeted at a person or at the party as a whole, and the condition of the victims beyond the broad categories given by police. The name of the teenager who died has not been released pending family notification.

Reactions and Quotes

Delaware State Police have not issued a statement beyond the release itself, which is focused on the facts of the case and the appeal for witnesses. The agency's message to the public was practical: anyone who attended the party or has information should contact Detective B. McDerby, and anyone who needs support after the shooting can contact the Victim Services Unit at any hour.

The shooting was noted in wider coverage of the Halloween weekend's violence, including in statements from Delaware officials about a separate shooting in Newark, where the governor said the level of gun violence was "not normal" and state police were assisting local investigators. No Delaware official has yet issued a separate public statement specifically about Ellendale, and no community vigil or memorial has been announced in the first hours after the release.

For the families of the victims, the immediate questions are medical and personal: the condition of the 20-year-old man in stable condition, the recovery of the seven other wounded young people, and the notification and funeral arrangements for the 17-year-old girl who died. For the wider Ellendale and Seaford communities, the questions are about safety at gatherings and about whether the person who fired into the crowd will be found.

Why It Matters

The Ellendale shooting matters for three reasons. First, it is a tragedy for a small community: a teenager is dead, eight other young people are wounded, and a Halloween night gathering ended in gunfire. Second, it is part of a wider pattern of Halloween weekend shootings across the United States, from Dallas to Birmingham to Newark, that has renewed debate about gun violence at public gatherings. Third, it is, for now, an unsolved homicide investigation, and the outcome will depend in large part on whether witnesses come forward with video, photographs or accounts of what happened at the party and on the neighbouring property.

The case also matters because of what police have not said. The absence of a named suspect, a motive or a weapon description is common in the first day of an investigation, but it leaves the community with uncertainty: whether the shooter knew someone at the party, whether the party itself was targeted, and whether there is any ongoing risk. Police have not said there is an ongoing threat, and they have not issued a shelter or safety warning for the area, but they have asked anyone with information to come forward, which is the standard appeal in a case where the suspect remains unknown.

What Happens Next

In the coming days, several things are expected. Detectives will interview party guests, neighbours and the wounded victims, review any video from the party or from nearby properties, and examine the scene on Beach Highway for ballistic and other evidence. If a suspect is identified, an arrest and charges would follow, and police would be expected to release the name of the teenager who died once her family has been notified.

Medical updates are also expected for the 20-year-old man in stable condition and for the seven victims with non-life-threatening injuries, though hospitals do not routinely release individual updates without family consent. The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit will continue to lead the investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective B. McDerby at (302) 741-2821, message Delaware State Police on Facebook, or contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) 847-3333.
