The Detroit Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings 19-15 on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Ford Field, handing the previously unbeaten Vikings their first defeat of the season in a bruising NFC North battle that will be remembered as much for a frightening injury as for the result. Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 153 yards and Jared Goff found Jameson Williams for the winning touchdown with 4:35 left, lifting Detroit to 5-2 and a third straight win — but the celebrations were muted after All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell was taken off on a stretcher with a neck injury early in the fourth quarter and transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Key Points

• Detroit Lions beat Minnesota Vikings 19-15 at Ford Field on November 1, 2026, ending Minnesota's unbeaten start at 6-1.
• Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 153 yards on 23 carries, including a 30-yard touchdown, and Detroit rushed for 230 yards against the NFL's top-ranked defence.

• Jack Campbell was stretchered off early in the fourth quarter with a neck injury and taken to hospital; no further update had been given by the team at full time.
• Detroit also lost Brian Branch and DJ Wonnum to concussion, D.J. Reed to a hip injury, and several other players in an injury-riddled game.

What Happened

The Lions trailed for much of a tense, low-scoring afternoon before their ground game took over late. Gibbs scored on a 30-yard run on the first possession of the second half, and Detroit's rushing attack finished with 230 yards against a Minnesota defence that had entered the game ranked first in the NFL. Sione Vaki added a career-best 65 yards on 11 carries, giving Gibbs vital support against the most physical defence Detroit has faced this season.

The decisive drive was built on Gibbs. He carried for 17, nine and nine yards on the go-ahead march, and Goff finished it with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Williams with 4:35 to play. Minnesota went three-and-out on its final possession, with Kyler Murray throwing incomplete to Jordan Addison in double coverage on third-and-five. Detroit then kept the ball on the ground for all eight plays of its final possession, rushing for 35 yards before two Goff kneel-downs, and Goff's earlier quarterback sneak for a first down had already iced the result.

Goff finished 18 of 25 for 276 yards. He threw his first interception of the season in the first half when Williams slipped on an out route, and he was sacked four times in the first half as Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores once again troubled Detroit's offence, drawing boos from sections of the home crowd. Murray finished 17 of 29 for 201 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for Minnesota, which still leads the NFC North at 6-1 despite the defeat.

Lions Vikings: How Detroit Won the Fourth Quarter

The fourth quarter belonged to Detroit's offensive line and its running backs. After Campbell's injury stopped play at the start of the quarter, an emotional Detroit defence produced a fourth-down stop on the very next play, and the offence then leaned on the run. Gibbs had runs of 17, nine and nine yards on the go-ahead drive, and Vaki contributed three key plays on the same march, catching a 5-yard pass from around midfield before runs of 12 and 10 yards.

On the final possession Gibbs added a 14-yard gain to help Detroit run the last 2 minutes 53 seconds off the clock. It was a fitting finish for a back who averaged 6.7 yards per carry despite a rough start and several lost-yardage runs on missed blocks, and who also caught two passes for 15 yards. Detroit's 230 rushing yards against the league's top-ranked defence said as much about the performance as the scoreline itself.

Background and Context

Detroit entered the game at 4-2, having beaten Green Bay the previous week, while Minnesota arrived at 6-0 as the NFL's last unbeaten team in the NFC North race. The Vikings' defence had been the story of their season, but Detroit's rushing attack — 230 yards in total — broke it down in the second half. The win moved Detroit to 5-2 and 2-0 in the division, keeping the Lions firmly in the hunt at the midpoint of the season.

The result also reshaped the NFC North picture. Minnesota remains in front at 6-1, but Detroit is now just a game behind, and the Chicago Bears were 5-2 heading into their Monday night game against Seattle, while Green Bay improved to 5-3 with a Thursday win over Carolina. With the division this tight, Sunday's head-to-head win could matter far beyond the standings in early November, especially if tiebreakers come into play in January.

For Gibbs, the performance strengthened his case as a frontrunner for NFL Offensive Player of the Year nearing the midpoint of the season. He has shouldered a heavy workload all year, and Sunday was another example: 23 carries, 153 yards, a touchdown, and the decisive runs when the game was on the line. Vaki's emergence — 10 carries for 62 yards on Sunday after just 16 carries for 56 yards in Detroit's first six games — may now allow Detroit to lighten Gibbs' load in the coming weeks.

Reactions and Quotes

The dominant reaction after the game was concern for Campbell rather than celebration of the win. The Lions announced during the fourth quarter: “Jack Campbell is being transported to a local hospital to be evaluated for a neck injury.” The announcement came after Campbell had lain still on the Ford Field turf for more than 10 minutes while medical staff prepared him for a stretcher, with players from both teams taking a knee.

Lions senior writer Tim Twentyman described the scene on the field, writing that the cart came out immediately for Campbell and that numerous medical personnel surrounded him as they prepared him for a stretcher. Reporting from the stadium described Campbell going limp after tackling Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson on the first play of the fourth quarter, his head appearing to collide with Hockenson's left hip before he fell face down and stayed down.

The emotional response was visible across the Detroit sideline. After Campbell was removed, the Lions' defence responded with a fourth-down stop on the next play, a moment that captured how the team channelled a distressing scene into the decisive stretch of the game. No update on Campbell's condition beyond the hospital evaluation had been provided by the team at the time the game ended, and that uncertainty hung over the post-game reaction.

Why It Matters

This Lions Vikings result matters on two levels. On the field, it ends Minnesota's unbeaten run, gives Detroit the head-to-head edge in the NFC North, and proves the Lions can beat the league's best defence on the ground in a close game. A team that can rush for 230 yards against that unit, and close out a game by running the clock out, is a team built for the winter months of the season.

Off the field, the Campbell injury is the story that will define the coming week in Detroit. Campbell is the Lions' leading tackler — he led the team with 54 tackles in their 4-2 start — and a first-team All-Pro selection last season. Losing him for any length of time would reshape a defence that already finished Sunday without Branch, Reed, Wonnum, Jimmy Rolder (hamstring), centre Cade Mays (ankle) and running back Jacob Saylors (neck). How Detroit manages that casualty list will shape its season as much as any single win.

What Happens Next

Detroit now gets a change of pace. After back-to-back division games against Green Bay and Minnesota, the Lions travel to Miami to face the Dolphins, who entered the week at 1-5 and were hosting New England on Sunday. Detroit then travels to Germany to play the defending AFC champion New England Patriots — a demanding stretch that will test the depth of a squad suddenly stretched by injuries.

The immediate question is Campbell's health. The Lions will update his condition once hospital evaluation is complete, and any absence would force defensive changes ahead of the Miami trip. Minnesota, meanwhile, must regroup quickly: the Vikings still lead the division at 6-1, but their quarterback play came under scrutiny again after Murray missed two touchdown passes to open receivers in the first half and overthrew an open Justin Jefferson on a crossing route for an interception.
