Key Points

• The DeKalb County officers shooting happened at about 6:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, November 1, 2026, in the 2000 block of Bouldercrest Road SE, police said.
• Officers were responding to a domestic incident when, during an encounter at the door, a man opened fire. One officer returned fire, according to DeKalb County Police Chief Greg Padrick.
• Both officers were struck by gunfire and are listed in stable condition. Police have not released their names or the nature of their injuries.
• The suspect fled into a wooded area, was tracked with help from surveillance cameras at the apartment complex, and was later taken into custody and taken to hospital, also in stable condition.
• The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and police have not yet announced any charges.

What Happened

DeKalb County Police Department Chief Greg Padrick said officers were called to the 2000 block of Bouldercrest Road SE at about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. When officers arrived at the address, they encountered a man at the door. During that encounter, the man opened fire on the officers, and one officer returned fire, Padrick said.

Two officers were struck by gunfire. Both were taken to hospital and are listed in stable condition, according to Padrick. The department has not disclosed the officers' identities or described their wounds in detail, and local reporting has noted that the precise nature of their injuries has not been made public.

After the shooting, the suspect fled into a wooded area near the scene. Police used surveillance camera systems at the apartment complex to get a clear look at the suspect and broadcast a lookout to help officers locate him. The man was subsequently taken into custody and transported to a hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. Sources cited by Atlanta television station 11Alive confirmed that two officers and the suspect were shot before the suspect was taken into custody.

Earlier in the evening, before the update from the chief, DeKalb County police had described the scene in cautious terms. The department told FOX 5 Atlanta that it was managing a "very active and evolving" scene at 2000 Bouldercrest Road, and asked the public to wait for further information. Multiple Atlanta Police Department cruisers were also spotted outside Grady Hospital in downtown Atlanta on Sunday evening, although officials did not confirm a connection between that presence and the Bouldercrest Road investigation.

Chief Padrick asked the community to keep the injured officers in their thoughts and prayers as they recover. That appeal, rather than a detailed account of the domestic incident itself, is the department's main public message so far: two officers hurt, a suspect held, and an investigation that is still in its early stages.

DeKalb County Officers Shooting: What Police Have Not Said Yet

Several central questions remain unanswered, and this article does not fill them with speculation. Police have not said what domestic incident prompted the original call, who else was inside the home, or what happened in the moments before the door encounter. They have not named the suspect, and they have not said whether the suspect was shot by the returning officer, or how he was injured. Reports from different outlets have differed on the suspect's age, so this article does not state an age for him until police confirm it.

No charges have been announced. That is normal in the first hours after an officer-involved shooting, when detectives must interview the officers, the suspect, witnesses and anyone connected to the original domestic call, review surveillance and body-camera material, and establish a precise sequence of shots. In Georgia, officer-involved shootings are typically subject to a separate review process, and departments often hold back names and charging details until that process has begun. Readers should therefore treat any name or charge circulating on social media as unconfirmed unless it appears in a police statement.

The location itself is significant for residents. Bouldercrest Road SE runs through southeast DeKalb County, near southeast Atlanta, and the 2000 block is a residential area of apartment complexes. Local reporting placed the scene near the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. For neighbours, the practical consequences on Sunday night were a heavy police presence, a search of a wooded area, and a hospital watch for three injured men — two officers and the man accused of shooting them.

Background: Domestic Calls and the Risks Officers Face

Domestic incidents are among the calls police departments treat with particular caution. Officers arriving at a home do not know who is inside, whether weapons are present, or how volatile the situation has become by the time they reach the door. That uncertainty is why departments send more than one officer to such calls, and why the first contact at a doorway can be the most dangerous moment of the response.

The DeKalb County Police Department serves a large, diverse county east of Atlanta, covering unincorporated areas and cities that do not have their own police forces. Its officers respond to the full range of calls, from traffic stops to violent crime, and Sunday's shooting is a reminder that a routine-sounding domestic call can escalate in seconds. The department's chief, Greg Padrick, has led the force through a difficult period for policing in the Atlanta area, and his public statements on Sunday were brief and focused on the officers' condition.

It is also worth placing this incident in its immediate context without conflating it with other shootings. The Halloween weekend produced several separate shootings across the United States, including the Boulder, Colorado, party shooting in which a University of Colorado student was killed, and the Birmingham, Alabama, shooting after the Magic City Classic football game in which one person was killed and eight were wounded. There is no evidence that the DeKalb County shooting is connected to any of those incidents. They happened in different states, under different police departments, and for different reasons. What they share is timing, not a link.

Reactions

Chief Padrick's statement is the principal official reaction so far. He confirmed the time and place, the door encounter, the return of fire, the stable condition of both officers, and the suspect's flight and capture. His closing request — that the community keep the injured officers in their thoughts and prayers — is the department's most human note in an otherwise factual update.

Local television coverage reflected the same restraint in the early hours. FOX 5 Atlanta reported only that police were investigating an active, developing situation along Bouldercrest Road, and that authorities had not disclosed what prompted the heavy response or whether anyone was hurt — a report filed before the chief's update confirmed the injuries. 11Alive, meanwhile, reported through its sources that two officers and the suspect had been shot before the suspect was taken into custody, a detail later consistent with the chief's account.

No statement has yet been issued by the suspect's family, by any person connected to the domestic incident, or by county officials beyond the police department. That silence is expected while the investigation is active and while the injured officers and the suspect are receiving treatment.

Why It Matters

It matters first because two officers were shot while doing the job the public asks them to do: answering a domestic call in a residential neighbourhood on a Sunday evening. Their stable condition is welcome news, but a gunshot wound that is stable on Sunday night can still mean surgery, a long recovery, and a career interrupted. The department has not said when either officer might return to duty, and it would be wrong to assume a quick recovery from the word "stable" alone.

It matters second because the suspect is alive and in custody. That means the investigation can proceed with a living accused person, with statements, evidence and, in time, charges that can be tested in court. It also means the community will, in due course, learn more about what prompted the call and what happened at the door — facts that are currently held back for investigative reasons, not hidden without cause.

It matters third because domestic violence calls sit at the intersection of public safety and private crisis. The person or people who made the original call, and anyone else inside the home, are part of this story too, even though police have not identified them. Their safety, and whether they received help after the shooting, will be part of any fuller account the department gives.

What Happens Next

DeKalb County police will continue their investigation, including interviews with the officers, witnesses and anyone connected to the domestic incident, and a review of surveillance footage from the apartment complex and any body-camera video. The department is expected to release the officers' names and more detail about their injuries when it judges that doing so will not compromise the investigation, and to announce charges against the suspect when they are filed.

Updates on the condition of all three injured men are also expected, though hospitals and police often hold those details while families are informed. Any announcement of charges, a suspect's name, or a change in condition would be a new development, and this site will report it when police announce it — not on the basis of unverified social media claims.

For residents of the Bouldercrest Road area, the immediate danger appears to have passed with the suspect's capture. The longer questions — what led to the shooting, and what happens to the man accused of it — will be answered by the investigation and, if charges follow, by the courts.
