Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged President Donald Trump to launch fresh military strikes against Iran immediately after Tuesday's United States midterm elections, Axios reported on Sunday, in a Saturday telephone call that exposed a clear split between the two allies over whether to give diplomacy more time or return to war. Trump, according to the report, wants to let negotiations with Tehran play out for now, even as the United States keeps preparations under way for a possible resumption of major combat operations once the votes are counted.

Key Points

• Axios reported that Netanyahu pressed Trump in a Saturday call to strike Iran immediately after the November 3 midterm elections, citing one American and one Israeli official.
• Trump wants negotiations with Tehran to continue for now, pursuing parallel diplomatic and military tracks, according to the report.
• An Israeli source described the call as "tough" and an American source called it "direct"; Trump himself described it on Sunday in Iowa as a "very good" talk.
• The White House and the Israeli prime minister's office both declined to comment on the report, Axios said.
• The call came as Qatari mediators met Iranian officials in Doha for a third consecutive day, and as Iran warned that any renewed war could last longer than the last one.

What Happened

The Axios report, published on Sunday and carried by outlets including The Hindu, the Economic Times and NDTV, is the fullest account yet of the Saturday conversation between Trump and Netanyahu. The two leaders discussed the state of negotiations with Iran and the possibility of resuming military operations, the report said, with Netanyahu pressing for strikes immediately after the midterms and Trump eager to let the talks play out. The characterisations from the two sides' sources tell their own story: the Israeli source called the exchange "tough", the American source called it "direct", and Trump, speaking to reporters in Iowa on Sunday, offered a far warmer public summary, calling it a "very good" talk and confirming that Iran was among the subjects discussed, without giving further details.

That gap between the private descriptions and the public summary is itself part of the story. Netanyahu is concerned about Trump's decision to let diplomacy run, according to Axios, while Trump is pursuing two tracks at once: seeking an agreement that could restart peace talks with Iran while keeping preparations under way for a possible return to major combat operations after the elections. Trump has said the United States will not launch new attacks before the midterms, but he has not ruled out military action afterwards, and on Saturday he repeated the threat that has framed the whole standoff, saying the United States could deal with Iran's remaining nuclear sites "in 10 minutes" and that there were still "one or two sites" to take care of.

The report also fills in the diplomatic background to the call. Vice President JD Vance sent a letter last week to Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, about the possibility of restarting negotiations, the highest-level American outreach to Tehran in several months. Rezaei disclosed the letter on Saturday, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has since said that no agreement has been reached so far and that progress depends on Washington responding to Tehran's questions. Araghchi also said Iranian negotiators were in Qatar discussing a proposal that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days if Washington met several conditions, while stressing that no direct talks were taking place between Iran and the United States.

Background and Context

The Saturday call did not come out of nowhere. It followed a week in which the American position has seesawed publicly between threats and talks. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in Atlanta on Saturday that Trump had not made a decision about fresh strikes and would be open to a diplomatic solution, while also warning that the United States could achieve its military objectives if it chose to. Hours later, Trump told reporters at Mar-a-Lago that negotiations were "going fine" but that Tehran was "not very reliable", and that the United States was in no hurry. The war itself, begun by the United States and Israel in February, has now run for eight months, and the NBC News poll released on Sunday tied much of the president's domestic trouble to it, with 60 per cent of Americans disapproving of his performance, in part over high prices worsened by the conflict.

The weekend also brought fresh violence and fresh warnings on the waterway at the centre of the crisis. On Sunday, two oil tankers exploded after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, with Iranian state media accusing them of travelling an unauthorised route with their navigation systems switched off. Earlier, the United States warned Iran at the Manama Dialogue that the hand of negotiation had limits, and Iran designated Britain's Royal Navy and Royal Air Force as terrorist organisations in retaliation for London's listing of the Revolutionary Guards. Against that backdrop, the Qatari mediation effort in Doha, now into its third consecutive day of meetings with Iranian officials, is the one channel still visibly moving, even if Araghchi insists that no deal exists yet.

Netanyahu Iran Strikes: The Post-Midterm Question

The specific timing in the Axios report is what makes it new. Netanyahu is not simply urging strikes in general; he is urging them immediately after the elections, on the apparent calculation that the political constraint holding Trump back, the fear of a wartime backlash at the ballot box, falls away on Wednesday morning. Trump, by contrast, appears to want the diplomatic track to have more room, and the report's description of parallel tracks suggests he is keeping both options genuinely open rather than using one as cover for the other. That is also consistent with his Saturday remarks: negotiations "going fine", no hurry, but one or two targets still to be dealt with, and the capacity to do it in minutes.

What remains unknown is how firm either position is. Neither the White House nor Netanyahu's office commented on the Axios report, and the two leaders' own public words point in different directions: Trump's "very good" against the sources' "tough" and "direct". The Iranian side, meanwhile, has used the weekend to warn of escalation rather than to offer concessions. Tehran said on Sunday that any renewed war could last longer than the previous round of fighting, and an army spokesman warned that a new war could extend beyond the Middle East. The supreme leader had already warned the United States and Israel on Saturday against launching a new offensive. Those warnings may be designed to raise the cost of the option Netanyahu is pressing for, or they may simply reflect Tehran's own reading of the same Axios report.

Reactions and Quotes

The only on-the-record words from the principals are sparse, and they should be reported as such. Trump, in Iowa on Sunday, said he had a "very good" talk with Netanyahu and confirmed Iran was discussed. On Saturday he said negotiations with Iran were "going fine" and that he was "not in much of a hurry", adding that Tehran wanted a deal but was "not very reliable". Rubio, also on Saturday, said Trump "hasn't made a decision" and preferred diplomacy, while noting: "We can achieve military objectives if we seek to." Araghchi said no agreement had been reached and that progress depended on the United States addressing Iran's questions. No statement has been published by the White House or by Netanyahu's office on the Axios account of the call, and this article does not treat the anonymous source descriptions as official positions.

Why It Matters

The split matters because the calendar is about to remove the main reason for delay. If Trump has genuinely held off new strikes until after the midterms, then Wednesday is the first day on which the political calculation changes, and Netanyahu's reported push for immediate post-election action is an attempt to set the agenda for that day in advance. It also matters for the diplomacy: Qatari mediators are trying to build a bridge to direct talks, and a public impression that strikes are already scheduled for next week would make Tehran less, not more, likely to cross it. Conversely, if the diplomatic track produces even a partial understanding on Hormuz or on inspections, it could give Trump a reason to keep waiting, and Netanyahu's pressure could look premature.

For Americans, the stakes are not abstract. The war has already shaped the election campaign, with polls linking it to the cost of living and to the president's approval ratings, and the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most important oil arteries: Sunday's tanker explosions are a reminder of how quickly a miscalculation there feeds into energy prices. The next 48 hours therefore carry two clocks at once, the electoral clock and the military one, and the Axios report suggests the two allies are reading them differently.

What Happens Next

The immediate watch is Tuesday's vote and what follows it. If the results are clear, the question of whether Trump moves quickly on Iran, lets the Doha mediation run, or does both at once will be answered in days rather than weeks. The Qatari talks are the most concrete diplomatic event to watch: a third day of meetings on Sunday produced no announced agreement, but Araghchi's Hormuz proposal, reopening within two days if Washington meets conditions, gives the mediators something specific to work with. The next American statements to watch are any formal response to the Axios report from the White House, and any further remarks from Trump or Rubio on whether the "no strikes before the midterms" line still holds after them.

Longer term, the durability of the split will show in whether the United States and Israel speak with one voice in the days after the election. A joint statement, a further call, or a visible difference in tone will each tell their own story. For now, the verified position is narrow: Netanyahu pressed for strikes right after the midterms, Trump wants talks to continue for now, and both men are keeping their options open while the voters decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How was the call described? An Israeli source called it "tough" and an American source called it "direct", while Trump publicly called it a "very good" talk in Iowa on Sunday. The White House and Netanyahu's office declined to comment.

Has Trump ruled out strikes after the midterms? No. He has said the United States will not launch new attacks before the midterms, but has not ruled out military action afterwards, and has said remaining Iranian sites could be dealt with "in 10 minutes".

What is happening diplomatically? Qatari mediators met Iranian officials in Doha for a third consecutive day on Sunday, seeking a deal to restart direct US-Iran talks, after a letter from Vice President JD Vance to Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei. Iran's foreign minister says no agreement has been reached yet.

Why does the timing matter? Because the midterms have been the stated reason for holding off new strikes; once they pass, the political constraint lifts, which is why Netanyahu's reported push for immediate post-election action is significant.
