The Boston Celtics beat the Orlando Magic 108-97 on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and the road win stretched their winning streak to five games. Jayson Tatum scored 32 points, Paul George added 17, and Boston survived a third-quarter rally, a tied game early in the fourth quarter and a late Orlando push to leave Kia Center at 5-1, while the Magic fell to 2-4 and 0-3 at home.

Tatum did much of his damage at the free-throw line, making 15 of 17 attempts, and George scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, including the three-pointer with 1:32 remaining that put Boston ahead 106-95 and ended the contest as a competitive game. Boston's bench outscored Orlando's reserves, its defence forced 18 turnovers for 21 points, and Neemias Queta blocked Franz Wagner twice in the final two minutes to protect the lead.

What Happened

Boston led 55-50 at half-time after outscoring Orlando 31-27 in the second quarter, and the Celtics opened the second half with the first nine points. George hit a three-pointer, set up Queta for an alley-oop, and Tatum added two free throws and a jumper to make it 64-50. Derrick White's three-pointer then pushed the lead to 69-54, the largest margin of the night, and for a moment the game looked as though it might turn into a comfortable road win.

Orlando answered with an 18-3 run built on three Tristan da Silva three-pointers. Anthony Black's three-pointer with 46.1 seconds left in the third quarter tied the game at 72, and although Tatum was fouled on two three-point attempts in the final 36 seconds of the period and made five of six free throws, Boston carried only a 77-74 lead into the fourth. The quarter scores tell the story of a game that kept changing shape: Boston 24-23 and 31-27 in the first two quarters, Orlando 24-22 in the third, and Boston 31-23 in the fourth.

The fourth quarter began with another Orlando surge. Black turned a Paul George turnover into a driving lay-up and a free throw, tying the game at 79 with 11:11 left, the last time Orlando drew level. Boston answered with an 18-6 run: a Payton Pritchard three-point play, a Luka Garza three-pointer, a George three-pointer and two George free throws, and a Baylor Scheierman three-pointer made it 97-85. When Desmond Bane and da Silva cut the lead to 97-93 with 3:59 left, Tatum hit back-to-back pull-up jumpers, Queta blocked Wagner twice in the final 2:01, and George's three-pointer with 1:32 left made it 106-95. Two Derrick White free throws completed the 108-97 final.

Background and Context

Boston arrived in Orlando on a four-game winning streak, having beaten Chicago 125-111 in its NBA Cup group-play opener on Friday, October 30, behind a season-high 30 points from Payton Pritchard off the bench and 26 points, seven rebounds and seven assists from Tatum. That win had already given the Celtics four straight victories after an opening loss at Detroit, and Sunday's result extended the run to five, with Boston now 5-1 and building an early-season record that matches the start of a team that expects to contend deep into the spring.

Orlando, by contrast, came into Sunday still searching for its first home win. The Magic had lost all three of their home games before Sunday, and the defeat made it 0-3 at Kia Center despite a balanced scoring night. Franz Wagner finished with 14 points and a career-high 12 assists, Desmond Bane scored 19 points with five three-pointers, and the Magic's bench gave them a lift through da Silva, who scored 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting with five three-pointers and 10 rebounds. The problem was not shot-making in isolation; it was the 18 turnovers, the free-throw gap and Boston's seven blocks to Orlando's two.

The game also carried an early scare for Boston. Tatum left late in the first quarter after the back of his head collided inadvertently with the forehead of Orlando's Jamal Cain, and for a brief period the Celtics' best player was off the floor being checked. He returned and finished with the game's highest scoring total, and his 15 free throws alone were as many as Orlando made as a team, on 19 attempts, while Boston made 22 of 26 from the line.

Celtics Beat Magic: The Numbers Behind the Win

The headline numbers favour Boston in the areas that decide close games. The Celtics made 22 of 26 free throws to Orlando's 15 of 19, blocked seven shots to the Magic's two, and turned 18 Orlando turnovers into 21 points. Their bench scored 32 points, with Garza contributing 12 points, six rebounds and four assists and Scheierman adding 10, while White scored 12 and Queta finished with eight points and the two defining defensive plays of the closing minutes.

Tatum's line was efficient rather than explosive: 8 of 19 from the field, 1 of 5 from three-point range, 15 of 17 from the line, seven assists, four rebounds and two blocks, with four turnovers. George finished 6 of 14 from the field and 3 of 10 from three, with six rebounds, eight assists, two steals and two blocks, and his fourth-quarter scoring, 10 points when Boston needed a closer, was the difference between a win and a game that might have slipped away for a second time.

For Orlando, Black scored 23 points on 6-of-12 shooting, made 10 of 11 free throws and added eight rebounds, while da Silva's 23 came on 9-of-14 shooting. Bane's 19 points included five three-pointers, and Wagner's 14 points and 12 assists showed a playmaker growing into a larger role. But the Magic never led after the early stages, and every time they tied the game, Boston had an answer within a possession or two.

Reactions and Quotes

The Associated Press report on the game emphasised the closing sequence, noting Queta's two blocks in the final two minutes and George's three-pointer with 1:32 remaining that gave Boston what the report called an insurmountable 11-point lead. The Reuters roundup, meanwhile, highlighted the same contrast that has defined Boston's start: Tatum's 32 points, on 8-of-19 shooting and 15-of-17 free throws, against a Magic team that made 15 free throws in total.

Al Jazeera's roundup framed the result in the same way, noting that some wayward Celtics shooting allowed a 15-point lead to evaporate in the third quarter, but that Boston's defence stayed resolute, forcing 18 turnovers for 21 points to pull clear again down the stretch. That framing captures the character of this Celtics team in the early season: not always clean, but difficult to beat when the game tightens, because the defence and the free-throw line give them two ways to win.

There was also a wider Sunday context for Boston's win. Elsewhere on the same night, Luka Doncic scored 45 points with 15 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Toronto Raptors 131-125, Golden State rookie Yaxel Lendeborg scored a career-high 37 as the Warriors beat the Los Angeles Clippers 124-112, and the Brooklyn Nets beat the Indiana Pacers 98-90 for their first win of the season. Boston's fifth straight win therefore came on a night when the league's early-season storylines, from rookie breakthroughs to winless teams finally breaking through, were all moving at once.

Why It Matters

A fifth straight win matters because of how it was earned. Boston did not win this game in a blowout, and it did not win it because Orlando played poorly. The Magic tied the game twice in the second half, shot well enough from three-point range through da Silva and Bane to threaten, and had a playmaker in Wagner creating 12 assists. Boston won because it defended without fouling recklessly, because it got to the line, and because its two most experienced scorers, Tatum and George, produced in the fourth quarter when the game was tied and then again when Orlando cut a 12-point lead to four.

For Orlando, the home record is becoming a story of its own. A team that cannot win at home in its first three tries will face questions about its composure in front of its own crowd, even this early in the season, and the Magic's next home game, against Washington on Monday, November 2, becomes a chance to stop that narrative before it hardens. A 2-4 record is not a crisis in November, but 0-3 at home is the kind of number that follows a team until it is fixed.

For Boston, the bench scoring is the encouraging sign beneath the headline. Garza's 12 points, six rebounds and four assists, Scheierman's 10 points and the 32 bench points in total suggest a second unit that can hold a lead and, on Sunday, extend one. A team that relies only on its starters will eventually wear down over 82 games; a team whose bench can produce in a road game in Orlando, against a team fighting for its first home win, has a different kind of depth.

What Happens Next

Both teams play again on Monday, November 2. Boston visits the Houston Rockets at 8:30 p.m. Eastern, a road test against a Western Conference opponent after a Sunday afternoon game in Florida, while Orlando hosts the Washington Wizards at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, looking for its first home win of the season. The quick turnaround will test Boston's depth again, and it will test Orlando's response to a third straight home defeat.

The Celtics will also carry a question into Houston: whether the third-quarter lapses that let a 15-point lead disappear are a pattern or a one-off. Boston shut Orlando out for the first four minutes of the second half, then conceded an 18-3 run, and a better team than Orlando might have turned that swing into a lead that stuck. The fourth-quarter response, an 18-6 run of their own, suggests the Celtics have the composure to recover, but the best teams eventually stop needing to recover at all.

Orlando, meanwhile, needs to turn home-court advantage into home-court results. The Magic have the scoring, with two 23-point scorers on Sunday and a 12-assist playmaker in Wagner, and they have the crowd. What they need now is a complete game: fewer turnovers, fewer fouls that send Tatum to the line 17 times, and a closing stretch in which they, not the visitors, make the last run.
