American factories picked up speed in October, defying forecasts for a flat month and giving the United States economy a fresh dose of momentum on the eve of the midterm elections. The Institute for Supply Management said on Monday that its manufacturing PMI increased to 55.5 last month, up from 54.5 in September, while economists polled by Reuters had expected the index to stay at 54.5. The reading keeps manufacturing firmly in expansion territory and underlines a domestic economy that, for all the anxiety about prices and politics, is still being powered by strong spending at home.

The ISM Manufacturing PMI is one of the most closely watched monthly barometers of American industry. It is built from a survey of purchasing managers at manufacturing firms across the country, and any reading above 50 signals that the sector is expanding rather than shrinking. October's result means the index has stayed above that dividing line all year, a run of resilience that matters because manufacturing accounts for about 9.4 percent of the American economy and because factory orders ripple outwards into jobs, transport, warehousing and business investment.

Key Points

• The ISM Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.5 in October, up from 54.5 in September and above the 54.5 forecast in a Reuters poll of economists.
• New orders edged up to 55.5 from 55.3 in September, with exports also rising and factory inventories increasing.
• Input prices stayed high: the prices-paid index eased only to 75.2 from 77.9 in September, well above the level consistent with calm inflation.
• Factory employment kept growing but more slowly, slipping to 52.4 from 52.7, still above the 52.0 forecast.
• Supplier deliveries slowed slightly further, to 59.1 from 59.0, a sign that strong demand is still straining supply chains.

What Happened

The headline surprise was the size of the beat. Economists had pencilled in no change at 54.5, so a full point rise to 55.5 counts as a clear upside surprise in a month when markets were braced for softer data. The details beneath the headline were mostly encouraging for growth, with one important exception for inflation. The survey's new orders measure edged up to 55.5 from 55.3 in September, with exports also rising, suggesting that demand is not just domestic. Factory inventories also increased, a detail that fits with the government's latest growth figures: the advance gross domestic product report showed business inventories rebounding last quarter after being drawn down for five straight quarters.

That combination — stronger orders, rising exports and rebuilding inventories — points to factories responding to real demand rather than simply working through old stock. It also helps explain why supplier deliveries slowed a touch further. The supplier deliveries index inched up to 59.1 from 59.0 in September, and in this survey a reading above 50 indicates slower deliveries. When demand runs ahead of what suppliers can comfortably deliver, lead times lengthen, and factories tend to keep paying more for the inputs they need.

The employment picture was more mixed, though still positive. A measure of factory employment edged down to 52.4 from 52.7 in September, slightly above economists' forecast of 52.0. In other words, manufacturers are still hiring on balance, but the pace of hiring has cooled a little. That is a pattern familiar across much of the economy this year: firms are not cutting, but they are adding staff more cautiously, weighing the cost of labour against uncertain demand and the price of materials.

Background and Context

October's factory strength did not arrive out of nowhere. Reuters reported that activity is being driven by robust consumer spending and business spending on artificial intelligence, two engines that have carried much of the American economy through 2026. The government reported last week that domestic demand surged at its strongest pace in more than five years in the third quarter, and the overall economy grew at a 3.4 percent annualised rate last quarter after expanding at a 2.2 percent pace in the April-to-June period.

That growth backdrop matters for how the PMI is read. A factory sector expanding at 55.5 is consistent with an economy that is still growing solidly, not one sliding towards recession. At the same time, the report lands in a week crowded with market-moving events. The midterm elections take place on Tuesday, November 3, and will decide control of Congress for the final two years of President Donald Trump's term. Apple and Palantir are due to report quarterly earnings after Monday's market close, with investors watching closely for what they say about demand, costs and spending on artificial intelligence. Friday's session, by contrast, was brutal for technology shares: the S&P 500 fell 1.8 percent, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 1.1 percent and the Nasdaq tumbled 2.9 percent, its worst single-day percentage drop in nearly five months.

Manufacturing has also been living with a long-running cost squeeze. Tariffs, shipping costs and strong demand for electronics and computing equipment have all fed into the prices factories pay, and the October survey shows that squeeze easing only slowly. The September report had put the prices-paid index at 77.9, and economists had forecast a modest fall to 77.5 in October. The actual fall, to 75.2, was larger than expected, but the level remains strikingly high by historical standards. In plain terms, factories are still paying sharply more for their inputs than they were a year ago, even if the rate of increase has cooled from September's pace.

ISM Manufacturing PMI: Why Input Prices Still Matter for Inflation

The ISM Manufacturing PMI matters for inflation because what factories pay today often shows up in what consumers pay tomorrow. When input prices stay as high as 75.2, businesses face a choice: absorb the extra cost and accept thinner margins, or pass some of it on in higher prices for finished goods. The October report suggests that pressure has not gone away, even though it has eased from September. That is why economists cited in the Reuters report said the data support the view that inflation will continue to run above the Federal Reserve's 2 percent target into 2027.

Other official data point in the same direction. The government reported last week that the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index — one of the inflation measures the Federal Reserve monitors most closely for monetary policy — shot up 3.6 percent year-on-year in September. That is well above the Fed's target, and it helps explain why the central bank has been so cautious about cutting interest rates even as parts of the economy have cooled. The Fed last Wednesday left its benchmark overnight interest rate in the 3.75 percent to 4.00 percent range while acknowledging that inflation "remains elevated", and economists expect the central bank to raise borrowing costs in December.

The October PMI therefore pulls in two directions at once, and that tension is the story of the American economy right now. Growth is holding up better than many forecasters expected, which is good news for jobs and for companies selling into the domestic market. But the same strength is keeping price pressure alive, which is bad news for anyone hoping for swift relief on borrowing costs. For households, that means the cost of credit — mortgages, car loans and credit-card rates — is unlikely to fall quickly, even if the jobs market stays resilient.

Reactions and Quotes

The Reuters report of the survey carried no single quotable line from the Institute for Supply Management itself, but the numbers speak in the survey's own language: every major component above 50 means expansion, and the prices-paid index above 75 means cost pressure that is hard to ignore. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the headline index would stay at 54.5 and the prices-paid index would ease only to 77.5, so both the headline beat and the larger-than-expected fall in prices paid will feed into market debate this week about whether the economy is re-accelerating or simply holding a strong plateau.

Market reaction on Monday morning was already leaning towards optimism before the PMI landed. United States stocks opened higher, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up about 0.77 percent, the S&P 500 up about 0.50 percent and the Nasdaq Composite up about 0.65 percent in early trading, while oil prices fell sharply on hopes for progress in talks over the United States-Israeli war with Iran. The PMI release, coming at 10 a.m. Eastern Time, added a fundamental reason for that firmer tone: the factory sector, often treated as a bellwether for the wider economy, is not just holding up but improving.

For the Federal Reserve, the message is less comfortable. The central bank acknowledged last week that inflation "remains elevated" even as it held rates steady, and the October PMI gives it little reason to change that assessment. If factories are still paying sharply higher input prices and domestic demand is surging at its fastest pace in more than five years, the case for a December rate rise — already the expectation among economists cited by Reuters — becomes harder to argue against, even though higher rates themselves weigh on households and businesses.

Why It Matters

This report matters because it arrives at a hinge moment for both politics and policy. Voters go to the polls on Tuesday with the economy, prices and the war with Iran at the front of their minds, and a factory survey showing growth above expectations complicates any simple story that the economy is either booming or breaking. It is, on this evidence, doing something in between: growing solidly, hiring slowly, and still passing high costs through the system.

It also matters for the Federal Reserve's next decision. A PMI at 55.5 with prices paid at 75.2 is not the profile of an economy crying out for cheaper money; it is the profile of an economy running warm enough that the central bank may feel it has to lean the other way. That has direct consequences for mortgage holders, small businesses seeking loans, and investors trying to judge whether the October sell-off in technology shares was a healthy correction or the start of something deeper. Apple's earnings after the close on Monday, and the October jobs report due on Friday, November 6, will add the next pieces to that puzzle.

Finally, the report matters for American workers in manufacturing itself. A sector that accounts for about 9.4 percent of the economy and is still expanding, still taking new orders and still hiring — even if more slowly — is a sector that continues to offer jobs in communities far beyond the technology hubs. The slowdown in the employment component, from 52.7 to 52.4, is worth watching in coming months: if it keeps drifting down while orders stay strong, it may signal that factories are meeting demand through productivity and automation, including artificial-intelligence investment, rather than through headcount.

What Happens Next

The immediate calendar is packed. The midterm elections on Tuesday will reshape the political landscape and, with it, the prospects for tax, spending and trade policy. Apple and Palantir report after Monday's close, and their guidance for the holiday quarter will be read as a verdict on consumer demand and on the returns from artificial-intelligence spending. The October nonfarm payrolls report, scheduled for November 6, will show whether the wider jobs market matches the factory sector's picture of slower but still positive hiring.

On the inflation front, the next test will be whether the easing in the prices-paid index continues. A fall from 77.9 to 75.2 is a step in the right direction, but the index would need to fall much further before factories could plausibly say cost pressure has normalised. If it stalls in the mid-70s, the Federal Reserve's expectation of inflation staying above target into 2027 will look well founded, and a December rate rise will become the base case for markets. If, instead, input prices keep easing while orders stay strong, the economy could yet deliver the softer landing that has eluded policymakers for much of this inflationary episode.

The next ISM manufacturing report, covering November, will be the first to show whether October's acceleration was a one-month jump or the start of a stronger run into the end of the year. Until then, Monday's numbers stand as the latest evidence that American manufacturing is expanding faster than expected — and that the price of that expansion has not yet been fully paid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ISM Manufacturing PMI?

It is a monthly survey of purchasing managers at American manufacturing firms, published by the Institute for Supply Management. A reading above 50 indicates the sector is expanding; below 50 indicates contraction.

What was the ISM Manufacturing PMI in October 2026?

It rose to 55.5 in October, up from 54.5 in September and above the 54.5 forecast in a Reuters poll of economists.

Why did input prices matter in the October report?

The prices-paid index eased to 75.2 from 77.9 in September, but that level is still very high. It suggests factories are still facing strong cost pressure, which supports the view that inflation will stay above the Federal Reserve's 2 percent target into 2027.

Did factory employment rise or fall in October?

It kept growing, but more slowly. The employment index slipped to 52.4 from 52.7 in September, still above the 52.0 forecast, meaning manufacturers added staff on balance.

What happens next for interest rates?

The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.75 percent to 4.00 percent last week while noting inflation "remains elevated". Economists cited by Reuters expect the central bank to raise borrowing costs in December.
