A 36-year-old man was shot dead in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, in Duluth, Minnesota, after an argument with another man he knew, police said. A 26-year-old man was arrested a short time later on pending charges of second-degree homicide, and the investigation into exactly how the confrontation turned deadly is still under way.

Duluth police were called to the 200 block of East 6th Street at about 2:45 a.m. on Sunday. Officers found a man with a gunshot wound; he was taken to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries. Police later identified the victim as Roshadie Suggs, 36. The suspect, also a man, was taken into custody and lodged in the St. Louis County Jail while the case is prepared for a charging decision.

Police have said the two men knew each other and that an argument between them led to the shooting. No motive beyond that argument has been released, and police have not said what weapon was used or whether any other person was involved. The killing, on a residential street in Duluth's hillside neighbourhoods east of downtown, is the latest homicide to test a city that, like many mid-sized American cities, has seen its police department lean heavily on rapid arrests in cases where victim and suspect already know each other.

• Police say the two men knew each other and that an argument between them led to the shooting; no wider motive has been released.

What Happened

According to the Duluth Police Department account carried by local radio station KDAL, officers were sent to the 200 block of East 6th Street at 2:45 a.m. on Sunday after a report of a shooting. Emergency dispatch audio from the incident, summarised by local crime-tracking sites, records a caller saying he had just been shot near East 6th Street and North 2nd Avenue East, and responding officers locating the victim in the intersection in front of a building on East 6th Street.

Medics were cleared to enter the scene and the victim was taken to hospital — local dispatch summaries name St. Mary's, Duluth's downtown hospital — where he later died. Police initially withheld the victim's name, then identified him in an updated report as Roshadie Suggs, 36. A short time after the shooting, officers arrested a 26-year-old man on pending charges of second-degree homicide. He was lodged in the St. Louis County Jail, the county facility that holds people arrested in Duluth pending court appearances.

What police have not yet said is as important as what they have. They have not released a motive beyond the argument, have not described the weapon, have not said where exactly the two men encountered each other or how long the argument lasted, and have not announced whether the suspect has been formally charged by the St. Louis County Attorney's Office or only held on pending charges. In Minnesota, "pending charges" means police have arrested a person on suspicion of an offence and the case is awaiting a prosecutor's formal charging decision — a distinction that matters, because the final charges filed in court can differ from the arrest allegation.

Background and Context

Duluth, a port city of about 87,000 people on the western tip of Lake Superior, is the county seat of St. Louis County, Minnesota's largest county by area. Its police department investigates homicides in a city where fatal shootings remain comparatively rare next to larger Midwestern cities, which means a single homicide draws sustained local attention and a full investigative response, including crime-scene work, witness interviews and, where available, surveillance and dispatch records.

Second-degree murder in Minnesota generally covers an intentional killing carried out without premeditation, as well as certain unintentional killings committed during another felony. It is distinct from first-degree murder, which requires premeditation, and from manslaughter, which covers killings committed in the heat of passion or through culpable negligence. The precise charge in any case depends on the evidence prosecutors believe they can prove — including intent, which is often the hardest element to establish when the only witnesses are the people involved in the confrontation itself.

The Duluth case also arrives at a moment when Minnesota's criminal-justice system is under unusual scrutiny. The state has been the focus of national attention throughout 2026 over federal immigration enforcement operations, high-profile fraud cases and policing debates, and local departments have faced pressure to show both speed and transparency in homicide investigations. A rapid arrest, as in this case, answers the first demand; the slower work of a charging decision and a court case will test the second.

Duluth Homicide: What the Arrest Does and Does Not Settle

An arrest on pending homicide charges is a significant step, but it is not a conviction, and it does not by itself establish the full story. Prosecutors in St. Louis County will review the police file — statements, medical evidence, any recovered weapon or forensic material, and the dispatch record — before deciding what, if anything, to charge and whether to seek to hold the suspect in custody pending trial.

That review can take days, and it can change the shape of the case. A second-degree homicide allegation at arrest can be confirmed, reduced to a lesser charge such as manslaughter, or, if the evidence supports it, raised. Self-defence claims, which are common in cases where two people who know each other argue and one produces a weapon, are also tested at this stage, though police have given no indication so far that self-defence has been raised in this case, and this article does not suggest that it has.

For Suggs's family and for the East 6th Street neighbourhood, the immediate questions are simpler and harder: who he was, what brought the two men together at 2:45 a.m. on a Sunday, and whether anyone else saw what happened. Police have not released biographical details about Suggs beyond his name and age, and no public appeal for witnesses has been reported in the police account so far. Those gaps are normal in the first 48 hours of a homicide investigation, when detectives are still interviewing witnesses and before a charging document makes the state's version of events public.

Reactions and Quotes

The Duluth Police Department's account, as carried by KDAL, is spare and factual: a shooting at 2:45 a.m., two men known to each other, an argument that led to gunfire, a victim taken to hospital who later died, and a suspect arrested a short time later on pending second-degree homicide charges. The department has said the investigation continues, a standard statement that, in practice, means detectives are still working the case and further details will follow a charging decision or a court appearance.

No statement from the St. Louis County Attorney's Office about a charging decision had been reported at the time of publication, and no court date for the suspect had been announced in the police account. That silence is not unusual: prosecutors in Minnesota generally do not comment on pending charging decisions, and jail records alone do not confirm a court schedule.

Why It Matters

The Duluth homicide matters first as a human story: a 36-year-old man is dead after an argument in the middle of the night, and a 26-year-old man faces the possibility of a homicide prosecution that could define the rest of his life. It matters second as a public-safety story, because homicides between people who know each other — the most common kind of homicide in the United States — are also the hardest to prevent through patrols or street-level policing, since they erupt from private disputes rather than stranger crime.

It matters third because the case will now move from the street to the courtroom, where the standards change. What police believe happened in the 200 block of East 6th Street must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt, with evidence that survives cross-examination. The speed of the arrest is therefore only the beginning of the story, not its end.

What Happens Next

The next formal step is the St. Louis County Attorney's charging decision. If charges are filed, the suspect will make a first court appearance, where the charges will be read, bail conditions set and a schedule for further hearings established. If prosecutors decline to charge on the current evidence, the suspect would be released, though police could re-arrest if new evidence emerges.

Detectives, meanwhile, will continue their investigation: interviewing witnesses, reviewing any video from the area, examining forensic evidence and building the timeline from the 2:45 a.m. call to the arrest. Further police updates are likely once a charging decision is made, and this story will be updated when that decision is announced.
