Vice President JD Vance opened his final day on the 2026 midterm campaign trail in Rome, New York, on Monday, 2 November 2026, with a rally meant to rescue a House seat Republicans have long taken for granted. The JD Vance Rome rally, held at Griffiss International Airport, was a direct appeal to voters in New York's 21st Congressional District, where Republican Anthony Constantino faces Democrat Blake Gendebien in a race that has become unexpectedly competitive on the eve of the 3 November election.

Key Points

• Vice President JD Vance rallied in Rome, New York, on Monday, 2 November 2026, for Republican House candidate Anthony Constantino in NY-21, joined by Donald Trump Jr. and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
• Constantino, the Sticker Mule founder backed by President Donald Trump, faces Lisbon dairy farmer Blake Gendebien for the seat held by retiring Representative Elise Stefanik.
• Donald Trump carried NY-21 by 21 percentage points in 2024, yet the Cook Political Report has moved the race from likely Republican to lean Republican, and a Siena poll put Gendebien four points ahead.
• Vance pitched Constantino as a Trump-aligned patriot, attacked Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries and Nancy Pelosi, and urged the crowd to help "ditch the witch" — a reference to Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul.
• Vance is also scheduled to campaign in Ohio on Monday, where Senator Jon Husted faces former Senator Sherrod Brown in a special election for the Senate seat Vance once held.

What Happened

Vance flew into the former Griffiss Air Force Base on Monday morning for a rally at the airport's SkyDome hangar, an indoor drone-testing facility at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park. Donald Trump Jr. introduced him, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright also travelled with the vice president and spoke ahead of him. Local Republican candidates, including Kailee Buller, who is running in New York's 22nd Congressional District against Democrat John Mannion, were also part of the programme, along with Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. and state legislators.

Vance framed the stop as the start of his last day of campaigning. "This is of course my final day on the midterm campaign trail, and I was trying to think where is the best location to kick off this final day," he said, according to USA Today. He told the crowd he had been looking for beautiful scenery and patriotic Americans, adding: "And it hit me, ladies and gentlemen, to get all of those things, all roads lead to Rome, New York."

He said he was there to "celebrate and honor" Constantino, whom he described as a future great congressman. The rally came hours before President Trump was due to deliver his own closing argument at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, and while Trump was also scheduled to hold nine tele-rallies for Republican candidates on Monday.

Background and Context

New York's 21st District covers much of the North Country, a sprawling, largely rural region along the Canadian border that includes Rome, Massena and other manufacturing towns. Stefanik has represented the district since 2015 and won re-election comfortably in past cycles, but she opted not to seek another term after a brief bid for governor last year. Trump carried the district by 21 points in 2024, and Stefanik carried it by 24 points in the same election, according to the New York Post.

That history is why the current polling has alarmed Republicans. The Cook Political Report changed its rating of the district last month from likely Republican to lean Republican. A Siena Research Institute poll showed Gendebien up by four points, although that lead sat inside the poll's 4.6 per cent margin of error. A separate Public Policy Polling survey conducted for House Majority PAC, a group linked to Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, in mid-October showed Constantino two points ahead — a reminder that the race is close and that different polls are pointing in different directions.

Constantino, 44, founded the sticker manufacturer Sticker Mule and has built his campaign around his business record and his loyalty to Trump, who endorsed him. The New York Post reported that he has put 7 million dollars of his own money into his campaign and has promoted the fact that he built his company in New York despite the state's business climate. Gendebien, a dairy farmer from Lisbon, is running as a moderate, pledging to bring back expired Obamacare subsidies, advocate for more Border Patrol agents, work to bring down the price of fuel, fertiliser and groceries, and assert Congress's authority over the war in Iran.

JD Vance Rome Rally: The Vice President's Pitch

The JD Vance Rome rally leaned heavily on biography and place. Vance compared the North Country's manufacturing hubs, including Rome and Massena, with his hometown of Middletown, Ohio. "I see a place that is not all that different from the place that I grew up," he said. He argued that the story of towns like Rome was not only about what America had lost, but also about what it still had the power to build, and he called Trump's presidency an "America First revolution".

He promoted the administration's agenda on sovereignty, including cracking down on illegal immigration and cross-border drug trafficking, and its combative trade policy — issues he said mattered in a district with a large border with Canada. He pointed to tax changes involving overtime, tips and Social Security, and highlighted a 1.2 billion dollar Chobani dairy plant investment in the region as evidence of manufacturing returning to upstate New York.

Vance also opened with a lighter note, joking about Halloween: his four-year-old daughter had brought him two of her brother's toys to donate to a Christmas toy drive, prompting him to quip: "I have apparently raised a Democrat." He then turned sharply to his opponents, tying Gendebien to New York's top Democrats and using a profane insult for the Democratic candidate, a line later reported by Raw Story, before tracing his own swearing to his grandmother, whom he described as a devout Christian.

Reactions and Quotes

Vance's central pitch to the crowd was framed as a message to Washington's Democratic leadership. "You have an opportunity not just to elect a patriot to fight for you in congress, you have an opportunity to send a message to [Senator Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer, to [House Minority Leader] Hakeem Jeffries and to [Former Speaker] Nancy Pelosi that here in the New York 21st Congressional District we are fighting for people who love the United States of America, not those who hate it," he told the crowd, according to WAMC.

He cheered Constantino for self-funding his campaign and for building Sticker Mule in New York, saying: "You have somebody running for Congress that has actually lived putting American workers first for a change. Let's fight for Anthony tomorrow at the ballot box." Constantino, in a statement on the rally, said: "We must get every Republican, independent, and common-sense Democrat out to vote Republican to Fire Kathy Hochul and hold our Congressional seat."

Vance also encouraged Republicans to "ditch the witch", in a reference to Governor Hochul, although he did not mention Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman by name, according to the New York Post. Attendee John Bevilacqua told WAMC he was fully committed to voting for Constantino after attending the rally, saying: "Unfortunately, the Democrats have gone sour. I used to be a Democrat. They've just gone too far to the left. All the values. The border, the economy, everything that's going on."

Gendebien's campaign responded critically to the rally, taking a swipe at Constantino over the location of the event, according to USA Today. The campaign has sought to present Gendebien as an independent-minded farmer rather than a national party figure, a contrast Vance directly attacked when he accused Gendebien of being controlled by Hochul and Jeffries.

Why It Matters

The Rome rally matters because it shows where Republicans feel vulnerable on election eve. A party does not normally send its vice president, the president's son and a cabinet secretary to a district its presidential candidate carried by 21 points unless internal polling and public surveys suggest the seat could slip away. If Democrats were to win NY-21, it would be a striking symbol of the midterm headwinds facing Republicans, and it would add to any House majority Democrats are already favoured to win, according to pre-election polling.

The race also tests a familiar midterm argument: that local candidates and local economies matter more than national mood. Vance tried to make both cases at once, praising Constantino's business and presenting the North Country's factories, farms and border communities as places the administration's policies were already helping. Gendebien's campaign, by contrast, has tried to keep the race local and practical — subsidies, fuel and fertiliser prices, border staffing — while arguing that Congress should reassert itself on war powers.

For New York politics, the contest is also a post-Stefanik test. Stefanik built a national profile from this seat; whoever wins it will inherit a district that has been reliably Republican but is now, by every public measure, genuinely contested. The result will shape how both parties read the rest of upstate New York on Tuesday night.

What Happens Next

Voting takes place on Tuesday, 3 November 2026. All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are on the ballot, along with state and local races and ballot measures across the country. In New York, voters in NY-21 will choose between Constantino and Gendebien, while voters in NY-22 will decide between Buller and Mannion, and New Yorkers statewide will vote in the governor's race between Hochul and Blakeman.

Vance's Monday schedule also includes Ohio, where Husted faces Brown in the special election for the remainder of the Senate term Vance was elected to in 2022 before he became vice president. Ohio also features a governor's race between Republican Vivek Ramaswamy and Democrat Amy Acton. Results in the closest House races may not be clear on election night, and US News Pulse will follow the results, the counts and the court fights as they develop.
