Americans will vote on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with Election Day gas prices set to be the highest ever recorded on an election day, after the national average for regular petrol stood at $4.17 a gallon on Monday, according to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA). The figure, reported on Monday, November 2, 2026, is already well above the previous Election Day benchmark of $3.80 a gallon in the week before the November 2022 midterms, and it arrives as the cost of living dominates the final hours of the midterm campaign.

The headline number tells only part of the story. Prices have eased for eight straight days, diesel remains near record territory, and analysts say the direction of oil prices in the coming week will decide whether the record is a one-day spike or the start of a longer slide. For voters, however, the price on the pump is the price they see every day, and polls show it is shaping how they judge both parties.

Key Points

• Election Day gas prices are set to be the highest in US history: AAA put regular petrol at $4.17 a gallon on Monday, November 2, 2026, against $3.80 in the week before the 2022 midterms.
• The price has fallen for eight straight days, down 12 cents from a week ago and 23 cents from a month ago, but it is still about $1.13 a gallon higher than a year ago.
• Diesel averaged $6.29 a gallon on Monday, just below its September 22, 2026 record of $6.53, keeping pressure on freight and food prices.
• The Financial Times calculates that the average petrol price across President Donald Trump's second term was set to pass $3.46 a gallon on November 2, above the previous administration-wide record under Joe Biden.
• Polls show fuel costs are a top voter concern: 75 percent of likely voters in an October New York Times/Siena survey disapproved of Trump's handling of gas prices.

What Happened

AAA's national average for a gallon of regular petrol was $4.17 on Monday, November 2, 2026, Al Jazeera reported, citing AAA data. That was down 12 cents from the same time a week earlier and 23 cents from a month earlier. The Sunday figure was $4.1732, according to AAA figures published by US Brief, after $4.1837 on Saturday, $4.29 a week earlier and $4.41 a month earlier.

The Washington Post, republished by DNYUZ, reported that gas prices are set to be the highest for any Election Day in US history on Tuesday. The comparison point is the average of $3.80 a gallon for regular petrol in the week before the election of November 8, 2022, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Monday's $4.17 is roughly 37 cents above that previous Election Day level.

GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, told CNBC that gas and diesel are on track to be the most expensive ever on an election day. "Prices have never been this high this late in the year," he said. GasBuddy had predicted last December that 2026 would be the cheapest year for petrol since 2020, before the war with Iran pushed oil higher, US Brief reported, quoting De Haan's remark that "Trump got in his own way."

Diesel, which powers the trucks that move food and goods, averaged $6.29 a gallon on Monday, down 6 cents from a week earlier, Al Jazeera reported. AAA's Sunday diesel average was $6.3039, just below the record of $6.53 set on September 22, 2026. Diesel first climbed above $6 a gallon in September.

Oil prices fell on Monday as diplomatic efforts to end the US-Israel war on Iran continued after in-person talks in Qatar over the weekend. Al Jazeera reported oil down 6 percent on Monday. De Haan wrote on X that oil was down about 5 percent, with wholesale petrol and diesel pointing to a decline of roughly 16 cents a gallon. "The national average could fall under $4 a gallon in the next week barring a course change," he said.

Background and Context

The price surge began with the war that the United States and Israel launched against Iran in February 2026. AAA's average was about $2.98 a gallon on February 28, 2026, when the war began, compared with $4.17 on Sunday, November 1 — a rise of about 40 percent. A year ago, the AAA average was $3.04, so drivers are paying roughly $1.13 to $1.14 more per gallon than at the same time last year, or about 37 percent more.

Brent crude, the global benchmark, stood at $72.48 a barrel before the war, rose above $126, and ended the week of October 30 at $113.43, up 56.5 percent from before the war, according to an analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) reported by Haberler. CREA put the worldwide additional fuel cost from the oil shock at $468 billion, of which $160 billion was reflected in the United States. Brent rose more than 13 percent in October and US crude rose 15 percent, CNBC reported via US Brief, even as prices eased on Monday.

The all-time high for US petrol remains $5.02 a gallon, set on June 14, 2022. The current level is below that peak, but it is the highest ever recorded this late in a year and heading into an election. The Financial Times analysis of federal data found that the average petrol price during Trump's second term was set to exceed $3.46 a gallon on November 2, surpassing the previous record average for a presidential administration under Biden. The same analysis put the second-term diesel average at $4.339 a gallon, against $4.076 under Biden. The FT stressed that this is an average across a presidency, not a single-day peak.

Prices vary sharply by place. GasBuddy's weekly report on October 26 put the national median at $4.09, with the most common price at $3.99; the cheapest 10 percent of stations averaged $3.44 and the most expensive 10 percent averaged $5.66. In Los Angeles County, the average fell to $5.98 as of Saturday, its 29th drop in 30 days, after California allowed an early switch to cheaper winter-blend petrol on September 28.

Moneycontrol's election liveblog noted that Michigan, a key battleground state, has recorded the biggest year-on-year increase in petrol prices. The wider economy gives the fuel story extra weight: the Bureau of Economic Analysis estimated real gross domestic product grew at a 3.4 percent annual rate in the third quarter of 2026, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported consumer prices up 3.7 percent over the year through September, with the petrol index climbing 9.1 percent in September alone and accounting for more than half of that month's overall increase.

Election Day Gas Prices and the Midterm Vote

Fuel costs are not an abstract economic indicator for voters; they are a daily, visible bill, and that visibility is why both parties have made affordability the centre of the midterm campaign. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 Senate seats and 36 governorships are on the ballot on Tuesday, November 3, and more than 54.5 million Americans had already voted early, according to the University of Florida's Election Lab.

An October poll from the New York Times and Siena University found that 75 percent of likely voters disapproved of the way President Trump has handled gas prices. While 53 percent said they trusted the Democratic Party to do a better job on gas prices, only 38 percent said the same of the Republican Party, the Washington Post reported. An Associated Press-NORC poll last month found that a majority of Americans believe addressing cost-of-living issues should be a priority for Congress, including 78 percent of Republicans and 89 percent of Democrats.

Gallup, surveying registered voters from October 1 to 19, found that 50 percent viewed the economy as extremely important to their congressional vote and 42 percent said the same of gas prices. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted August 28 to 31 found that 47 percent selected the cost of living as the single most important factor in their midterm vote.

Trump campaigned in 2024 on bringing petrol back to $2 a gallon, and in September 2024 he pledged at the Economic Club of New York to bring gasoline "below $2 a gallon," CNBC reported. Monday's $4.17 is more than double that pledge. The White House has responded that, adjusted for inflation, prices were higher around some past election days, though it did not give figures in the CNBC report, and that prices will fall sharply once the Iran conflict ends.

Reactions and Quotes

White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers told Al Jazeera: "Once this conflict comes to an end, gas prices will drop drastically, and the Iranian terrorist regime will not have a nuclear weapon." Rogers added: "Protecting America's national security from threats by a radical terrorist regime that has chanted 'Death to America' for 47 years was the right thing to do — and President Trump is the only president who has had the courage to do it."

Rogers also told Al Jazeera: "Thanks to the exceptional work of the US military, more oil is now flowing out of the Persian Gulf than before the Iran conflict began." A White House official told the Financial Times that prices were higher under Biden when adjusted for inflation, a claim the newspaper reported without figures.

De Haan, of GasBuddy, struck a more cautious note about the recent dip. "Oil markets down significantly this morning after Trump signalled he favoured negotiations and not new attacks on Iran," he wrote on X. "Oil down [approximately] 5%, wholesale gasoline and diesel pointing to roughly 16 [cents per gallon] decline. The national average could fall under $4 a gallon in the next week barring a course change."

On Wall Street, oil and gas stocks fell in midday trading on Monday even as the wider market rose: ConocoPhillips was down 3.7 percent, Chevron 2.3 percent and ExxonMobil 3.3 percent, while the Nasdaq rose 0.7 percent, the S&P 500 0.6 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average 1 percent, Al Jazeera reported.

Why It Matters

A record Election Day petrol price matters for three reasons. First, it hits household budgets directly: a driver filling a 15-gallon tank at $4.17 pays about $62.55, against about $45.60 at last year's $3.04 average — roughly $17 more per fill, before any difference in driving habits. Second, diesel near $6.30 feeds into the cost of moving goods, which is one reason food and consumer prices have stayed sticky even as headline petrol prices ease. Third, it undercuts the affordability argument at the heart of the Republican campaign, while giving Democrats a concrete, everyday number to point to in the final hours before polls close.

The record also matters because it is not yet final. The Election Day figure will be the Tuesday average, and if the Monday oil slide holds, Tuesday's number could come in below Monday's $4.17 while still comfortably beating the 2022 benchmark of $3.80. Analysts cautioned that the eight-day slide could reverse if diplomacy stalls or strikes resume: Trump has said he will not resume strikes on Iran before the midterms, but De Haan warned that a later escalation "could obviously put upward pressure on prices just ahead of Thanksgiving."

For the Federal Reserve, fuel costs complicate the inflation picture. With consumer prices up 3.7 percent over the year through September and the petrol index driving more than half of September's monthly increase, a sustained fuel spike would make it harder to argue that inflation is under control, while a sustained fall would ease pressure on households and on the central bank alike.

What Happens Next

Polls close in stages on Tuesday, November 3, beginning at 6 p.m. Eastern Time in parts of Kentucky and Indiana and ending at 1 a.m. Eastern Time on November 4 in Alaska's Aleutian Islands. AAA will publish a fresh national average for Tuesday, which will confirm whether the Election Day record stands and by how much it beats 2022.

Traders will watch whether Monday's oil fall holds through the week and whether wholesale declines of roughly 16 cents a gallon, flagged by GasBuddy, reach retail pumps in time to push the national average below $4. The next scheduled inflation reading, October CPI, is due on November 10, and the Federal Reserve meets on December 8 to 9, so the fuel data will feed directly into the next round of economic decisions.

Politically, the result on Tuesday night will show whether voters punished the party in power for fuel costs, rewarded it for the recent eight-day slide, or voted on other issues entirely. Either way, the $4.17 figure will remain the number both sides argued over in the last full day of campaigning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the US average gas price on Election Day 2026?

AAA put regular petrol at $4.17 a gallon on Monday, November 2, 2026, the eve of the election, and analysts expect Tuesday's average to be the highest ever recorded on an election day, beating the $3.80 of the 2022 midterms.

How much higher are gas prices than a year ago?

AAA's year-ago average was $3.04 a gallon, so Monday's $4.17 is about $1.13 higher, or roughly 37 percent more.

What about diesel prices?

Diesel averaged $6.29 a gallon on Monday, down 6 cents from a week earlier but just below its record of $6.53 set on September 22, 2026.

Why are gas prices so high?

The main driver is the war with Iran that began in February 2026, which disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and pushed Brent crude from $72.48 a barrel before the war to above $126 at its peak.

Could prices fall below $4 soon?

GasBuddy's Patrick De Haan said the national average could fall under $4 in the next week if Monday's oil slide holds, with wholesale prices pointing to a decline of roughly 16 cents a gallon — but he warned a renewed escalation could push prices back up before Thanksgiving.
