What Happened

New York started well and led by as many as nine points in the first quarter, before Brooklyn answered with a 12-0 run. Moritz Wagner ended the opening period with an old-fashioned three-point play that pulled the Nets to 27-21, and Keon Ellis capped the run with a three-pointer that put Brooklyn ahead 30-27 with 9:02 left in the second quarter. The Knicks answered with a 7-0 spurt, and after Brooklyn scored five straight points, Shamet scored six points as New York closed the half with a 17-9 run to take a 51-44 lead.

The third quarter swung back to Brooklyn. New York extended its lead to 69-60 on a pair of Anunoby free throws with 5:16 left in the period, but the Nets then scored 13 straight points to begin a quarter-ending 19-6 run. Mikel Brown Jr. and Michael Porter Jr. had six points apiece during that surge, and Brooklyn took a 79-75 lead into the fourth quarter, with a first win in back-to-back games suddenly in sight after its first victory of the season on Sunday against Indiana.

The fourth quarter, however, belonged entirely to the champions. Josh Hart opened the period with a three-pointer, and Anunoby gave the Knicks the lead for good by sinking three-pointers on consecutive trips. Jordan Clarkson's three-pointer with 7:48 remaining opened New York's first double-digit lead at 91-81, and the Knicks led by at least seven points for the rest of the night. Brooklyn shot just 18.8 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, was outrebounded 43-38 overall, and lost the fast-break battle 13-2.

Shamet's 22 points off the bench set the tone for New York's depth, while Brunson's 19 points and Towns' double-double gave the Knicks a steady spine when the game tightened. For Brooklyn, Randle's 21 points and 11 rebounds against his former team were a bright spot, as were Porter's 18 points, Nolan Traore's 17, and Brown's 13 off the bench. But none of it survived New York's fourth-quarter defence, which held Brooklyn to 11 points in 12 minutes.

Knicks Beat Nets: A Fourth Quarter That Changed Everything

The Knicks beat the Nets because they have learned, as champions must, how to win a game twice: once by building a lead, and again by taking it back. New York led at half-time, lost the lead in the third quarter, and then produced its best 12 minutes of the night when it mattered most. Anunoby's back-to-back three-pointers were the turning point, but the real story was collective: Hart's opening three, Clarkson's dagger, Shamet's bench scoring, and a defence that gave Brooklyn almost nothing clean in the fourth.

Brooklyn, by contrast, could not sustain what had worked in the third quarter. The Nets' 19-6 run to close the third was built on pace and ball movement, with Brown and Porter scoring freely. In the fourth, that movement stopped, shots stopped falling, and New York's size on the glass, led by Towns' 16 rebounds, ended possessions before Brooklyn could build any rhythm. A four-point lead entering the fourth became a 13-point loss, a swing of 17 points that will sting for a team still searching for its identity.

Reactions

Post-game grades for Brooklyn focused on the fourth-quarter collapse, noting that the Nets led after three quarters but shot under 19 percent in the final period and were beaten on the glass and in transition. Randle's double-double against the team he spent five seasons with before being traded to Minnesota in the October 2024 deal that sent Towns to New York was the individual highlight for Brooklyn, but even that could not change the game's direction.

Why It Matters

The Knicks entered the season as defending champions, and an 0-3 start raised fair questions about focus, depth, and the weight of defending a title. Three wins in four games does not answer all of those questions, but it does restore the standings and the mood. At 3-4, New York is back within touching distance of the Eastern Conference pack, and it has done so while finding scoring from its bench.

For Brooklyn, the picture is harder. At 1-6, the Nets are again at the bottom of the standings, and Monday showed both their promise and their problem: they can compete with the champions for three quarters, but they cannot yet finish against them. Until they solve the fourth quarter, and the rebounding and transition gaps that come with it, wins will remain rare.

What Happens Next

New York will try to build on this win and turn three wins in four games into a genuine winning streak, with its bench now providing a reliable second wave behind Brunson and Towns. Brooklyn, meanwhile, must regroup quickly and find a way to hold a fourth-quarter lead, because the next opportunity to prove Sunday's first win was real will not wait long.
